1) Sam is not being bought out. He only has this season remaining so why both. More likely they move him to a team dumping salary (how unClipper-like).

2) Why trade for a guy that can be picked up for nothing in the off season. Danny said this season is to build chemistry so this offseason is when we are more likely to find Rondo's backup.

3) The following players are FA's this summer:
Tyronn Lue (Close friend of KG)
Chris Duhon (would be my pick)
Sam Cassell
Jason Williams
Juan Dixon

Cassell has already stated he would like to play his last year next season in Denver. If Cassell were to play in Boston it will be after the trade deadline in February for this year only unless he somehow had a change of heart.

If you listen to Doc's interview in the audiovault on WEEI this week he pretty much comes out and says the Celtics will be looking for buyout PGs after the trade deadline.

no he would be ok because when he re-signed with the clips he knew that in theory he was going to be the mentor to shaun livingston and eventually be backing him up. it comes down to who finishes the game not who starts, and i think sam would be out there in the final min with ray,pp,kg, perk/poz and against certain teams he and rondo would play together with ray being the 3, pp the 4 and kg the 5

This is actually one of the things that worries me. AS great as he is in the clutch I'm also concerned that he could become a crutch as well. It will be very hard for Doc to not play him at certain times irregardless of play, esp. crunch time. We saw Doc do this with Walker and it is a lingering concern of mine

A few thoughts:

- Let's hope that the team that trades for Sam isn't playoff bound. Sam's playoff experience is a valuable asset.

- I'm not too sure I'd want to see Tony Allen go out in a trade for Cassell, as that leaves the Celts without a defender to bring off the bench. Posey can guard 2s and 3s, but we still wouldn't have anyone capable of guarding the taller, stronger PGs like Billups.

- I'm hoping Ainge can help facilitate a trade to some team who will buyout Cassell after they acquire him. Maybe throw this team some cash to help cover the costs, as well as pitching in a draft pick to help ensure this team has the most attractive deal for the Clips

Yeah but the thing is, this trade can't happen without either Eddie's or Gabe's contract to make them match. I'd much rather keep TA and give up EHouse and Pruitt. TA is much more valuable in the long run. Especially if we can sign him to a cheep 3-4 year deal during the summer.

The tradecheckers says Tony and Scala for Cassell works. I like Tony, but I think House and Pruitt are more valuable. House because of his shooting and Pruitt because of what he can learn from Cassell.

I've been saying this for a while and I'll say it again just for credit's sake if it happens the way I say.

First of all forget trading for Sam.

If we want him AND he is willing to leave a lot of money on the table for a ring then we can have him. All he has to do is offer LAC a low buyout. Failing that he can try to make things difficult for them there and force his way out.

This all depends on:
1. Sam's willingness to do this(both leave money and possibly force his way out)
2. Us wanting him
3. Our willing to break the rules and get them word to him that we will sign him.

I would love to see Sam on this team.
He still has a lot left in him, and he finishes at the end of games.
This would make us have so much depth.

I think Sam should start if we do acquire him. He fits much better with the starters that we have and he has more maturity. I've always felt Rondo is a better suited as a change of pace point guard than a starter. I'd probably ended up splitting minutes equally between the two, but have Cassell start the games, and finish the close ones.

I'd say the chances of him ending up in Boston this year are less than 10%. Next year, maybe.

Advice to teams hoping to prise Sam Cassell away from the Clippers (yes, Dallas, this means you) for playoff purposes:

It would probably be wise to trade for Cassell before mid-February comes and buyout negotiations commence that could make the 38-year-old a free agent.

Reason being: Cassell and Kevin Garnett are so tight to this day that, as one interested suitor confessed, it's difficult to imagine Cassell choosing to sign anywhere but Boston if he makes it to the open market, where KG can start lobbying him.

I didn`t know KG and Sam were such close friends. Now I am going to be following Cassell situation even closer, hoping that he doesn`t get traded!

I didn't know KG and Cassell were that KG and Cassell were so tight either, that Cassell signing with Boston would be essentially a lock if he made it to the market like Stein states.

I'd imagine that means Boston's odds of signing him in the off-season, if they can't get to him sooner, would be pretty good as well.

I hope they can acquire him for this year, but I think the Clippers can probably get a nice little package for him that makes more sense than buying him out. Cassell is really a perfect fit for this team, in my opinion.
