Can TJ play the 2?

Post#1 » by crzycnk62 » Sat Jan 19, 2008 2:42 pm

i personally like jose at the point...can tj play the 2 and be happy about it

Opinions please as I am not sure if it would work...i like both players but having 16 mil wrapped up in point guards does not make a lot of sense

Edit: Fixed title. Thanks.

TJ is too small to play the 2. If you're looking at a 2 point guard line-up, I'd suggest that Jose plays the SG.

Good on offense, terrible on defense

Agreed. They are not the second coming of Childs and Alvin.

No way it works.

Raps use 2 only as a corner shooter anyway, just look at Delfino.
I guess you could use TJ as a 2 on offense and switch with Jose on defense, but without tweaking the offense first, I don't see the rewards in that.

for stretches, but not for extended minutes ... Calderon would end up guarding the off-guard on the opposition anyways ... and he already gets abused on a nightly basis by the opposing lead guard ... TJ playing the 2 would work on the offensive end ... but the only guy under six feet capable of playing the 2 in the league is Iverson, whom TJ obviously is not ...

I do agree that 16mil for two PG's makes no sense, especially two guys that can't be put on the floor at the same time ... Jose's perceived value at this point will have him command more than the 8.5M/yr TJ is making ... thus, it also makes no sense to pay your backup more than your starter ...

He would get utterly burned on defense.

I think you can play Jose and TJ in spurts. Four minutes to end the 1st quarter or the 2nd quarter. Another short spurt of 2-3 minutes at the end of the third as you transition from the Starting PG to the Backup PG.

Extra 6 minutes of play for each player.

Jose: 20 minutes + 6 minutes
TJ: 28 minutes

I think on defence, as long as they can keep their man infront of them, we should be okay since our defence is based on helping the man in the post. We just have to rotate faster and maybe even employ a zone defence.

With this lineup, we have to capitalize on our speed and really push the ball and get some easy basket and potentially force our opponents into playing small ball. If this happens, jose and TJ could play even more minutes together :D

No, he'll be a complete defensive liability to us.

If Dixon can play SG then I don't see why Ford couldn't play. On defense u would have to go zone but u would need to make sure that Moon/Deflino, Bosh and Rasho are on the court to make up for the lack of size in the backcourt. We'd have to play Zone on defense.

It's not so much on defense that I'm worried about. I dont think either player plays very well without the ball.

Just thought I'd add that Calderon has now become my favorite Raptor of all time! Got my jersey yesterday.

Maybe on offense. I don't know if he would make a good 2-guard though, since his catch-and-shoot/mid-range game is suspect (and I'd say Calderon can't play like a 2-guard, because his release is too slow and low to get it off without dribbling a bit).

If TJ could come screens and shoot like Parker, then why not. We could switch Jose on to the bigger guards for short periods of small ball. He did an okay job holding his own against Roy, he wouldn't that much of a liability, at least not more than he is already.

If we had both of them out there at the same time it would be amazing for our offensive fire power, I think Jose could guard most 2's in the league. Also our team has a good deal of great help defenders to make this work, although they would both only play with each other for maybe 10-15 minutes a game.
