Atlanta - Miami - Golden St. baggage exchange

Post#1 » by evildallas » Sun Jan 20, 2008 5:44 am

Small deal to rearrange baggage

Atl out: Ty Lue, Zaza Pachulia, 2nd round pick
Atl in: Jason Williams

Why? Upgrade at PG to make a run at making playoffs.

GSW out: Mickael Pietrus
GSW in: Alexander Johnson, Ty Lue, 2nd round pick

Why? Add a backup PG (that they are supposedly in the market for) and a rebounder without taking on long term obligations that would screw up resigning Ellis and Biedrins. Clear unhappy player. Pick up a 2nd round pick for their trouble.

Miami Out: Jason Williams, Alexander Johnson
Miami in: Mickael Pietrus, Zaza Pachulia

Why? Get rights to player they wanted and save 2.2M off cap which is a direct luxury tax savings. Zaza isn't expiring, but only has 1 more year at $4M which is affordable for a bruising big (and could be dealt in the summer is so desired).

I don't think we'd want to add an extra year of Zaza, who I think could be packaged somewhere for an expiring.

EDIT: Oh, and Alexander Johnson has actually shown promise. I'd personally just look to sign Pietrus in the offseason. But really, with the emergence of Cook, I don't want him anymore.

I don't see a need for us to take Zaza back, and Johnson just doesn't need to be included. I'd rather deal straight with Golden State, giving them J-Will for Pietrus....

I don't see GS getting thiner by trading Pietrus for non rotation players. They might pick up an extra veteran post player or a veteran reserve pg with the TPE or unused players, but they need another rotation quality wing/nellie-ball pf to replace Pietrus if he's traded away.

I'd give you J-Will straight up if you want him. I see no need for Pietrus...

Pretty generous of you bbf. Problem is the salary. It would have to involve more players from Golden state to work or we'd need to use our TPE which I don't think we want to use just yet (saving it for potential use at the trade deadline). I'd like to see Pietrus go to Miami (have wanted him to all along), I just don't think there's reasonable deal that would benefit the Warriors enough to make it now. You need to come up with something better if you can. Right now the Warriors are in the drivers seat (not really under pressure to deal anyone just yet) and do not need to make a move unless it's something that will really be of benefit to them.

Dude, I'm not sweetening the pot if I'm the Heat. I'd rather happily just buy him out...

Well, as they say, there's always "wait till next year".

The most likely deal is something like Williams + $3M cash + 2nd round pick for nothing.

Miami saves over $10M with the luxury tax savings, and the TPE created for them could be useful in the offseason patch job. GS gets a reserve pg who might still be better than Watson. Normally they would also expect a late 1st for their trouble, but Miami doesn't have one to trade, so they take a high second instead.

We also don't have a high second to trade (We traded it to Boston in the Antoine Walker deal who traded it to Minny in the Ricky-Wally deal). But, I believe we own Orlando's 2nd this year (if the right to that pick didn't transfer to Minny).

Warrriors not going to use TPE to go into luxury tax just to get a low 2nd rounder.

You can keep JWill. If you want GSW to get JWill, Miami will have to take back Pietrus, POB, THud, and/or Kosta to save a few millions instead.

CJ Watson is doing just enough for Nellie to not hurry the need for a vet backup PG. If CJ is signed for the rest of the season in a week, then all these JWill trade talks can be done with. If he is released, Payton (or maybe a soon to be released Mighty Mouse) could be a cheap resolution than JWill (for TPE trade idea).

Taking JWill wouldn't put GS into the luxury tax...

Flash... where are you getting your info?

I want you to add up the salary and tell me how $9Mil from JWill not get the Dubbs into Luxury tax.

From what I saw, it is anywhere from $60Mil to $64Mil.... and since luxury tax is just under $68Mil, Dubbs will be in luxury tax. The main unknown is Sarunas' contract... some say it is a $250k buyout. And some said Mully released him.

The ESPN trade checker. Look at the bottom where it says GS Warriors payroll. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/t ... 9-1018-933

And I believe Sarunas had a 250k buyout.

Not Flash, but as I wrote on the Warriors board

Sham (who's usually pretty good) has the Warriors at $57.3M, including Foyle, Saras and Lasame but not the MBenga or Watson, who combined with training camp invites would add less than a million. The Lux tax line is $67.8M, giving the Warriors at least $9.5M room under the cap this year.

The only possible catch is Foyle's buyout. Sham's figure is less than many others (and I don't think there are any official #'s out).
