The Magic get pretty much everything they're looking for. In Smith they get a banger PF with a great attitude and some scoring ability. Jarrett Jack gives them a very good combo guard who could challenge Jameer Nelson for the starting PG spot. Gerald Green gives them a bigger and more athletic SG than what they have. Since they've shown repeatedly they have no clue about scouting or drafting losing a mid-round pick in a shallow draft is no major loss. Darius Miles is practising again and is now a mature man on a mission. He could be a valuable contributor off the bench.

For Portland this deal is done with an eye on the future, specifically the summer of 09. While Portland certainly takes a hit talent wise they also move some pieces which seemingly aren't part of the plan. Moving Darius Miles' contract is the big attraction here. With him off the books Portland will have between $15-20 million in cap-space then and that takes three forthcoming 1st round picks, Vazquez, Koponen, Freeland and Rodriguez as well as an $8 million extension to Webster. Vazquez is making noise about coming to the NBA and what better place for him than with his compatriots Fernandez and Rodriguez.

In the short-term Foyle and LaFrentz back up C and Outlaw and Garrity PF.

I agree, and I wonder if Frye and Jack have enough trade value by themselves to get a team to eat Darius Miles $18 million. Late first rounders go for about $3. I certainly don't think they have the trade appeal to also bring in a 1st.

And moreover, why do you want ORL's late 1st anyway? Its another guaranteed contract on your team that will has 15 guaranteed salaries already, if you don't get rid of Green and McRoberts. Plus, if you want to bring over Freeland and Rudy Fernandez, then add two 1st rounders, that's 19 .. four over the 2009 roster limit. Even if the deal registered a 1st, you'd be better off sending it to MIN, and getting one of their early 2nd rounders. Yeah, I know you have plenty, but those assets are stashable overseas, and doesn't constrain a tight roster size (or your lux).

I've been hearing good things about Frye, and if he can defend, perhaps he'd be a good compliment to Al Jefferson in MIN, so I like that part of the trade.

it's not a bad thought.

But before they did that, they would probably like to see how the draft order ended up. They may try to use their first along with a player or two to move up in the draft order or get a good young veteran while 'trimming' a roster spot.

The problem is that Minnesota's 2nd round this year is 'tied-up' in a past trade with detroit. I'm not sure they can trade it. And since Minnesota is planning on cap-space in 2009 the same as Portland, I don't think an exchange of large contracts is possible that might normally go with trading draft picks.

Most people wouldn't realize that, so good job. However, MIN can choose to give DET their 2nd either this year or next, and since this is most likely the highest 2nd rounder, and this draft is deep, I think its pretty much a foregone conclusion in MIN that they'll give away their second next year.

I like it a lot for Minny... Frye would be their new starting center and might be a pretty decent fit next to Al. Portland obviously does it mainly to dump Miles contract which is a relief... Orlando definitely doesnt do it with the pick in there... take out the pick and they might do it,.. but its still very hard for someone to swallow Miles contract. If he comes back completely healthy then sure... but unless that happens I dunno...

Id say Portland does it definetly, the loss of Frye hurts a little but with Oden coming in next year his minutes will probably be further reduced anyway and we should be able to pick up a banger in the second round to play bench minutes. Jack is pretty likely to be traded anyway and hopefully Sergio would be able to step up with more minutes.

I don't really think Orlando's 1st is neccesary anyway, it will be late and with 2 early second rounders the roster will be pretty loaded anyway. Now it's more a job of trimming it to fit the best players on the team while bringing in a few nice players from elsewhere.

I like the idea of Vazquez coming in as well to try and earn minutes along Rudy and Sergio off the bench, their spanish connection could develop and provide some real spark in the white team.

Once again Village Idiot, this is IMO a great trade proposal, it clearly adresses team needs and if we could get rid of Miles like this, I wouldn't be complaining.

Even with the roster imbalance in Portland, and even with the need to move Miles, I just can't see them giving Frye and Jack away for salary cap space and a mid 20s 1st rounder.

Logically, the value of a mid 20s 1st rounder for the Blazers has been 3M in cash the past two years. So if Portland really wants a late pick then they'll buy one. Of course they don't really want a late pick for reasons mentioned above.

My issue from a Blazer perspective is that Portland gives up two big chemistry pieces and more importantly a chance to have a truly unique set of young big men in LA, Oden, Frye and even Przybilla.

Jack's ability to get into the lane coupled with his accuracy from the line make him a potent offensive weapon. He can defend both guard spots.

Considering we got Jack with the 22nd pick and considering his development (how quickly we forget that he started 79 games for us last year), I'd say the Blazers would ask to have this deal re-worked before they committed to moving both Jack and Frye.

That's a good post and I can't discuss your team's chemistry. However, as far as value goes, if a late 1st goes for $3 mil dollars, moving $18 mil of Miles future salary should mean Jack and Frye are worth six late 1st rounders. I thought asking for another 1st was a little much, but if those two guys are crucial to you, I could understand POR saying "no."

If I was Portland I'd wait until next season's trade deadline to move miles for expirings, he'd have 1.5 seasons left on his contract and they could move him at a much more reasonable price than Frye+Jack. Portland really only needs his contract off the books in '09 anyway.

I think the original deal is fair, but if others feel like this, MIN could take Sergio, and send the Magic Sebastian Telfair. His numbers are comparable to Jack (more assists but lower shooting percentage), but he has an added advantage that he's not a guaranteed salary next season. If Jameer does well in the second half, ORL could simply pass on Telfair's qualifying offer. Orl would have to send out Augustine's small expiring to make the numbers work, but that shouldn't be an issue -- it would depend on if they wanted to take a look at Telfair.

That works for me still also. I think the wolves like these deals. Frye is a great fit next to Al. Sergio could be a very good back up PG also.

Orlando gets the physical 4 they want/need. As well as a very underrated PG in Bassy. Gerald Green is an ending contract, but if a good coach (and orl has a good coach) gave him a shot you could be surprised.

Portland gets out of Miles contract and with their depth they do not lose much that hurts. Foyle also adds vet value to their team.
