Dorell Wright and this board

Over the years, I remember many people were high on Dorell Wright. Whether it was for Mourning or for Marshall people wanted this man BAD in a Raptor uniform.

What has he done to warrent this interest? I mean, he's in his 4th year, with a sinking ship like the Heat you'd think he play and put up something bigger than 6.5 and 4.7 in 22.9 mins.

Again, I know nothing why this board just loves him, anyone care to explain?

in all seriousness, i think it was because miami seemed one of the few logical destinations for some of our tradeable assets and we'd want a good young prospect back and so that fit - a high schooler on the bench on a here-to-for (word?) championship calibre team who might need a piece (3 pointer, like donyell or mo pete)

i think i saw dorell rumoured in seattle-miami trade yesterday.

we just wanted to get something back for donyell marshall and miami was one of the rumoured destinations for him.

Its common on all message boards. Your not satisfied with what you have, the group mentality circle jerks around a young prospect and his "P"otential. It always easier to dream about what could happen, then facing the mediocore reality. Then he sucks when the "P" is not fully realized (or was overstated) he gets tossed aside, and the circle jerk starts for another youngster.

he's a tad bit soft. On and off the court. I've seen interviews with him, and i don't think he has the right approach to becoming a superstar. He has more of the mental makeup of a role player.
For example, he looks up to Dwyane Wade as a role model, which, in my mind is a bit messed up. Not that dwayne wade is a bad guy to look up to, but the fact is they are similar in age and ability and dorell should try and challenge himself to become better than wade. It's not that wade is all that much more talented than dorrell, it's that he's worked his ass of to get to where he's ranked in the league.
IMO, dorell's a bit too sweet about everything that he does, basketball and personality wise.

IMO Dorrell has Scottie Pippen like potential. He can really do it all, except he is majorly missing a jumpshot. I also think he is being rode hard by Riley this season or Riles has just lost touch with reality, because they should really be developing him and giving him 35+ mins a night.

Well, without your obvious negative connotations, I think you're mostly right. Wright had crazy potential that he hasn't realized. Similar to a guy like Gerald Green (or even Kwame, but his draft status makes that a little different). I don't think it's that crazy for fans to covet players who they see having a lot of upside. Sure, that can get overblown and people get overconfident in their assessment, but it's not like this board was the only place that thought Wright had a lot of potential. Sometimes the fans are way off and maybe GMs didn't deal for Wright because they knew more than we did (we as a group can get a little carried away with athleticism sometimes), but it's just as likely Miami's FO was as caught up in his potential as we were and made the price too steep. Which prospects to keep and target is such a crapshoot in general. Who's going to become good or great isn't nearly the science we pretend it to be sometimes. There's a lot of luck and other factors that you can't assess clearly. I think it's fair to point out where the hype machine runs rampant, but it's good to remember that the hype machine (at least in this case) was based on a solid foundation of a kid who looked like the perfect specimen to become an excellent SG. That he didn't progress to that point is neither unexpected or entirely predictable so I don't think it's fair to make people, who thought he'd be good, out to be crazy nonsensical fanboys.

I still want Dorell Wright...I think we need a young SG/SF after AP and Kapowno start aging. What can we get in this draft better then Dorell, unless its a centre then I think that our first rounder should be sent to Miami.

i think it's the homoerotic fascination that some have with African-American basketball players who are 6'3-6'8 and known for their particular athleticism, penetration abilities, and flair, while being under the age of 25.

it has to be it. there's no other explanation for the fascination with guys like Dorrell Wright, Brandon Roy, Gerald Green, Andre Iguodala, etc. We never hear the same enamored declarations for the greatness of Al Jefferson, David West or Carlos Boozer, even though those three are conceivably much more talented and only slight less likely of being acquired than the aforementioned...

when one frequent poster says we need Dorrell Wright, everybody tends to copy. i think that's what happened. And IIRC he never played a single game that time. everybody was hypnotized, believing he's the 2nd coming of TMac.

and no, with this much ...er...lack of playing time, he's nowhere close or even has the potential to be a Pippen type player. no way Jose.that's so adding to his hype. please stop it. :barf

Watch him play. Watch Scottie play. I stand by my assessment and still think that he is young enough to reach a high level of play while using his Pippen like attributes. Especially when he is playing alongside a DWade.

I think it originally stemmed from a rumour that we could've traded Marshall for Wright, but Babcock decided to hold on to Donyell and just let him expire.

yeah i definitely think it was all in the hopes that we get something for marshall, instead of nada. also, we've been starved for athleticism for a long time, and wright has a lot of that, if not much else (at this point). plus, if shaq says he's gonna be a superstar, you have to listen. it's shaq, and he's big.

i don't think that was ever the case. i don't ever remember it being a rumour, other than people on here suggesting it alot.

i think even babcock would have jumped all over that. i think that was wishful thinking. and no way miami does that deal. dorell wright to rent a player for a few months?

Since you are so high on Wright, does he need to leave Miami to fully establish his game? I mean, he's on the Jermaine O'Neal pace, 4 years and hasn't shown anything yet. Then O'Neal gets traded to Indiana in his 5th year and the rest is history.

I'll be honest with you guys, I haven't seen Dorrell play much because I don't watch Miami games. All I know is he's a 6'10 athletic SF/SG who can rebound and shoot. A 6'10 SF/SG reminds me of Kevin Durant.

Best thing is he's 22 years old. Still very young and he might need a change of scenery. Sam Mitchell looks like a good coach for him.

He used to look very nice in the few minutes he got. Good all around game. I dont know how he's doing nowadays but if he still wants to develop to his full potential he really needs to change his mentality. He's spent a lot of years not contributing to the team and hopefully he's not used to having that mentality.
