OT - Martin Luther King, Jr. Thread

Although the connection with basketball is obvious, I'd thought it would be appropriate to create an OT MLK Jr. Thread for any thoughts on this holiday. Perhaps one of the few times when OT could mean both on-topic and off-topic.

And it's true, like most national heroes and figures, we're not aware of some of the difficult things MLK Jr. said. Most recognize the "I have a Dream" speech, but MLK Jr. posed even bigger challenges.

Martin Luther King Jr. truly defined courage, and strength, and what it means to be a real man. I don't think he was looking to do great things, he was more importantly, looking to do the right thing.

I don't know if MLK took Arab ne'er-do-wells into consideration when he said this. I must admit that I am prone to prejudging an individual merely because he's cutting someone's head off in a surgical manner.

The great MLK is speaking from a faith driven spiritual perspective and not a physical one. He is speaking to look beyond the physical that you see with your eyes and look to the goodness that God has instilled inside of everyone. Whether or not they choose to let that side show it is not my job to judge but to see the goodness because no matter what shows on the outside or what anyone may do, it is there. CHURCH!!!

Just goes to show you how far this country has come in ways and not so much in others. But, without a doubt, if MLK didn't do the things he did, the USA would be so much darker. Some don't realize that these Civil Rights movements happened not to long ago.

As far as the picture , I agree with you Mang.
It a positive image , everyone is full of joy and happiness include D.L.K .
Like they have achieved a goal or a battle .

You rarely see images of D.L.K that shows him smiling since he went through so much pain , suffering , trials and tribulations in his quest to seek what he died for and at the end what he achieved and that was civial , human-rights and racial equality .

They fought oppression and encouraged the suppressed races to stand up for themselves and fight for their rights. They won over their enemy with peace and truth rather than use forceful tactics which makes their accomplishments all the more wonderful.

Feels great to remember this wonderful human being.

thats the point. if you only look at the action you won't see it. that is exactly what Dr. King Jr. was talking about. now think about what you said, Muslim extremest. They have love for their God. Although it is mislead it is still there. If you could manage to turn that love in a positive direction you would have what would be considered the most loving individuals in the world. Unfortunately that is not reality but that is the "Dream". That is the hope and that is what we as a people need to strive for. That is what Dr. King strived for. He did not look at people for what they were, but whom they could become if they had a change of heart and an enlightened outlook about their place in this world.

I agree. MLK had every right to despise the country that enslaved Africans. But he saw it as his country. He had every right to despite the white Americans who oppressed him. But he saw them as his countrymen. It blows my mind. What's even more amazing is that it was effective.

He saw the good in his enemies, and the social progress that we've seen since then is a direct result of that incredible feat.

The skeptic in me believes that violence is necessary in this world.

But the example set by MLK, as seen in Gandhi before him, and Christ before him, shows that the most powerful way to defeat your enemy is to see him as your brother.

Sometimes, though, I feel your brother needs to get punched in the face.

At times I have left my heart , friendship , money , everything I could have done for some of my SO CALLED BORTHERS , and honestly they're the ones who screwed me worst than my enemies .
Yet even now I still refuse to turn my back on someone that needs my help even after the have Fd me over .
