What would it take to get Caron Butler in a Mav uniform?

Post#1 » by JES12 » Tue Jan 22, 2008 7:17 pm

I would really love him as a Mav, but I see no trade that both teams would like.

I don't want to insult Washington fans with any suggested trade, but I would like to guage what it would take.

Josh Howard for Caron Butler straight up seems fair, maybe a 2nd rounder here and there...

I would imagine that if they traded him at all, talks would have to START with Josh Howard.

Nothing you'd be willing to offer, IMO.

We like Butler more than Howard, so a Caron/Josh swap wouldn't be plausible.

You'd never trade Dirk for the guy.

We don't need Terry or Harris.

So I don't see any possible way.

I kinda figured it started with Josh also. I was actually thinking Josh + a 1st for Butler, but with our 1st will be mid to late.

I, personally was playing around in trade checker with Dirk + somebody for Butler and Daniels/Haywood but the 2nd player on each side became real gray. And you are right, I think most other mav fans would not do that, but I certainly would salivate over a 1-3 of Harris, Howard & Butler.

Caron Butler is working his way into the conversation as a top 20 player in this league, and he has the best possible attitude and court demeanor one could hope for in an NBA player. He's 27 years old and just entering his prime.

Basically, Caron Butler is untouchable. I can't name more than 7 players in the league for whom I'd trade Caron Butler. I'd trade him for the following players:

Lebron
Kobe
Duncan
Paul
Dwight
Yao
Bosh

Wade and Nowitzki have more trade value in the abstract, but I'm not sure if I would trade for them if I were the Wizards because of the way the team is constructed.

You're right about the problem with a Caron/Dirk swap, that it's the fillers.

Let's say, for fun, that the basis of the deal was Caron and Dirk. Washington could add Antonio Daniels, but why would Dallas want ANOTHER guard, and specifically, another point guard.

Washington could, instead, add Brendan Haywood, but why would Dallas want ANOTHER center (who, BTW, is basically a minorly rich version of Diop)?

Great Post... ya Butler is pretty much as untouchable as Arenas... those players above is about all we'd trade Caron for. He's not going anywhere!

Okay, just for fun, if Hawood is that big salary filler, we can add Diop.

Lets extend it to Dirk + Diop for Butler + Haywood.

That almost works. Washington would have to add around 1.4 mil worth of salaries to finish that trade, but most players in that range would tip the scale over to the "no" side from Washington except maybe Pecherov. Is that getting any closer?

I understand that stance as well. There was a thread (on the Dallas board) last week metioning trying to get either Caron Butler or Gerald Wallace and both I think, and stated, both are pretty much untouchable.

We are still trying to get a starting caliber swingman to put next to Howard.

Stackhouse.....to old
Jones..............to old
Ager...............to raw
Hassell............good defender, avg shooter, but Avery won't play
George...........good defender, lacks on offense
Terry..............really a PG or undersized 2, avg at best defender

None of those are worthy of a starting position at the 2 or 3 spot.

Howard is the better man to man defender, but Butler plays the passing lanes better and is more of a defensive play maker. Harris, Howard, Butler would be would be the ultimate combo 1-3 if that happened.

I'd say it would cost Josh Howard and then some.
