Official Game Thread: Wizards at Cavaliers Wednesday Jan 23r

Post#1 » by Donkey McDonkerton » Tue Jan 22, 2008 5:11 pm

When: Wednesday Jan 23rd at 7pm
Where: Away
Who: vs Cleveland Cavaliers
TV: Comcast SportsNet

Both teams are playing great basketball right now, I think Cle has won 9 of their last 11.

The two best SF's in the East are going head to head, should be an awesome matchup!

Poor Larry-his game just isn't the same without Gil.

No Etan means Haywood actually gets to guard Big Z this time!

I just don't know if Stevenson can limit LeBron, or if he'll even get the assignment (Butler?).

Lebron is gonna get his, probably 30+, its his supporting cast that we have to limit. Guys like Gooden, Sideshow Bob and Gibson. If they go off, we could and will lose this game. Limiting Lebron's assist is more important than limiting his points.
Just let the young boys play! It's truly the only hope at this point.

I think EJ has to put DeBargain on LeTravel. Not that Butler couldn't guard him, but it would take too much out of our best player.

CB3 is not afraid of BronBron. Remember the powder toss? I wanna see it again.

I see Caron on the bron. What's LH's status?

Jamison versus Gooden is the key matchup. Jamison always destroys Gooden on offense, but Gooden sometimes makes up for it by nailing the 18-footer and getting a ton of offensive boards. Jamison has to get a hand in Gooden's face and keep him off the glass.

We know Haywood will contain Z. We know our guards are better than theirs. If Jamison can outplay Gooden by a considerable margin, it should be enough to make up for the disparity between Lebron and Butler.

gotta stop varejao from doing all of his varejao stuff -- offensive boards, getting to loose balls, drawing charges, etc. the team and crowd feed off his energy when he's rolling and he's been rolling big time lately. between him and ilgauskas they have two of the best offensive rebounders in the conference, so our bigs need to go a good job on the defensive glass. if the cavs don't get a bunch of easy putbacks and the wiz continue to play strong D, i don't think the cavs have enough offensive firepower outside of lebron to take the game with the way the wiz offense has been flowing.

Frankly, I think our bench bigs have done a better job of containing opposing bench bigs this season. Last year, I would have been a lot more worried about long, active bigs like Varejao making mincemeat out of our shorter, less athletic bigs like Ruff and Etan. Not so this year, what with Blatche and now Da Pech Mode getting burn. Even Songaila can at least offset the occasional off rebound he'll give up with offensive production on the other end.

These days, I'm more concerned these about 3 point shooting swingmen off the bench than athletic energy players. The Wizards bench tends to play a lot of match up zone on D, and while they're able to close out well on sweet shooting small guards and combo guards (e.g., Jason Terry), taller Nachbar-types are often able to get open looks in the corners--especially when Songaila is in the game.

However, I don't think the Cavs back-up swingmen (Shannon Brown and Devin "Path Not Taken" Brown) are great spot-up shooters. I'm not as worried about Boobie and Damon for the reasons described above. So, hopefully, this should be another strong defensive outing for the Wizards bench.

I can't stand the Cavs. This is a big game. The Cavs imo are East Conference Contenders and the two main reasons are. 1. They are the defending Eastern Conference Champs 2.They have Lebron/the refs on their side. Should be a good game.

Oppie is the difference maker. We now have a battalion of bigs we can line up against them. We can make them more of an outside them.

Our perimeter players can extend the D with more bigs to back them up.

We will rotate multiple players to cover LB so no one player has to sacrifice all his energy and the rest of their game guarding him.

By the way - if you live outside of the Washington, DC area (Nate, Severn)...NBA League Pass is in FREE PREVIEW mode until the 27th.

At least that's what it says on DirecTV. If you have cable, it's still worth checking out.

Ah this one is definately winnable. Need a good performances from Haywood and Jamison on the boards, decent shooting from the bench and Stevenson, and Caron to at least come close to matching Lebron.

I really hope Caron out-performs Less-Bron. 8)
