Upon TJs Return...
Somewhat premature, but for discussion's sake...
Naturally the TJ vs Jose debates will resume.
The immediate return should intuitively put TJ on the bench to backup Jose as starter. I think this will really work cause it won't disrupt the present starter chemistry. Given Bosh, Jose and AP have improved their scoring, I don't think TJs value will show as a starter cause our boys are scoring.
Coming off the bench he can spark the occasionally stagnant second unit by breaking down defenses and scoring himself. Here is where we need a kick to really build on leads and put teams away. We have lost a few games with our inability to maintain pressure with the second unit. Also, his draw and kick speed may finally unleash Kapono's potential from the three.
Finally, working against 2nd unit PGs and teams will help him get his feet and NBA game back.
Of course, as time goes by and the two PGs show equal production, the decision to change the starter may come up given the Big Money TJs earning. But if things roll smoothly, can they continue to keep him on the 2nd unit?

My buddy and I were arguing about this the other day.
He believed that with the way Calderon has been playing that there is no way TJ should come back and get the starting job. He feels that Calderon has earned the starting job for the rest of the year.
My problem was that I could see TJ agreeing to come off the bench for 1 to 2 weeks. But once he was comfortable again he would demand the starting role.
Sam will have to give TJ his starting role. There is no other way to go about it. Jose can come off the bench and be fine. I think TJ would cause problems if he wasn't the starter.
As for the saleries, who cares. I highly doubt that Sam starts (or even plays) people based on their paycheck.

Reason No. 12,356 why I love the NBA: The Curry-Randolph combo marks the first time in NBA or WNBA history that a team has started two C-cups at the same time.

Hahaha I really want to know what this analogy was now.
With regards to the OP, I disagree. I think TJ NEEDS to start when he comes back. Supposedly he's been 100% physically for some time now, but he hasn't been totally right mentally. Therefore, if he gets demoted as soon as he comes back I think that could really hurt his confidence. TJ won't need to find his legs, he says he's physically fine. What he needs to do is get used to leadings this team again.

I have a feeling that TJ is going to come off the bench for the rest of the season. Not because he's lost his job (he was playing very well this season) but because I think they're going to want to protect their investment and moniter his minutes.
On the flip side, if Jose is the guy they ultimately want to deal through sign and trade or otherwise. By continuing to give him the bulk of the minutes it will only help to increase his trade value.

If TJ understands his new role to play 'safer' like Colangelo told him to, I'm guessing he might play as backup pg. As OP suggested, it would be good for him to play against the 2nd liners. If he could replicate what Calderon did on the 2nd line that would prove he can come back.
Thing is, he can demand the starting, and Calderon will just get out of the way.
Jumping back into starting is not a good idea, but a gradual one perhaps. As Hater also pointed out, Calderon's trade value increases.
