Defensive Rebounding

Post#1 » by Buck You » Mon Jan 21, 2008 10:35 pm

Well, as many of you probably heard today, we are the worst defensive rebounding team in the NBA. So, how do we fix this monstrosity of a stat? Well, we could start Voskuhl at power forward to begin the game because he is really good at rebounding and getting around the basket. Don't start Ruffin though, he is such a liability on the court that he's not worth it. I don't know why he's in the NBA. Yi shouldn't be playing right now, he's a liability everywhere on the court and he's not ready for the NBA. So, I say start Voskuhl if we really want to win games because he can get a lot of rebounds and use his fouls. Plus, he's a pretty good shooter. If we didn't allow so many offensive rebounds we'd be such a better team because we'd get out and run after getting the rebounds. But I doubt LK does anything about this.

Problem is that the Bucks' defenders are constantly out of position for rebounds, because their rotating on defense. I'm not sure whether some people are slow at rotating / finding an opponent to guard or box out, or whether it's due completely to poor individual defense (forcing too many switches).

When teams can easily get the ball in the bucket against you its hard to rebound.

That has to be the first time Voskuhl has ever been mentioned as a solution to any teams problem in the NBA> And hopefully the last!! :):)

we play a lot of zone as well and that can really screw up responsibilities. One of the features of a 2-1-2 or 2-3 zone is potentially having a strong rebounding triangle of players close to the basket. However, athletic opponents can snake through from outside and get the jump on the defenders.

At this level, man-to-man is a far better option but we get burnt to easily there as well. We simply lack the athletes to go with the better slashers, drivers and offensive rebounders.

Well it's not like I want him to start. It's just the only thing I can think of to solve this mess. Yes, we are out of position a lot too but if you have a starting power forward that is afraid of contact you aren't going to get a lot of defensive rebounds.

Prior to today's game the Bucks were 18th, not 30th, in defensive rebounding rate. They are far from the worse defensive rebounding team in the league. Perhaps the announcer was using last season when they were 29th (or was it 30th). The little bitty defensive improvement this season relates to the improvement in defensive rebounding. Indeed this season the Bucks are doing worse in getting turnovoers and the same as far as opponent shooting.

Really? That's really odd that the announcer got such horrible information. Although, according to this stat on NBA.Com they are 27th in defensive rebounds per game. So maybe the announcer was right and we just moved up a couple spots since that game.

Rebounds per game does not get at a team's rebounding performance, as it doesn't control for availability and pace. That is why rebounding rate is used. The Bucks' defensive rebounding rate this year has improved from last year when it was 30th. This year it is 19th.

Well then, I see now. But the announcer was obviously going by rebounds per game not rebounding rate. At least we are in the middle of the pack of that stat.
