What's with all the hatred for Big Al lately?

Horace. During the Beasley wars WormGuts has brought up the Al issue. Saying that we do not pass on Beasley because of Al because Al is not a franchise player.

Worm's just got higher standards for franchise player than most of us, though. I didn't see him calling Al a number cruncher, just not a franchise player. Going by his standards for franchise player, somebody like LA_33 wouldn't consider Al one (he doesn't post much here anymore, but after the trade and during the talks, he said he viewed Al as a 2nd best player on a championship team type), and LA's probably seen just about every game of Al's NBA career.

I would agree with the Worm/LA_33 definitions of franchise player. I absolutely think that Jefferson is a great young building block, but I don't see him as the building foundation. I don't think his game is diverse enough to be the best player on a championship caliber team, unless it's a lightening-in-a-bottle Pistons-like situation with four other players all equally as good as he with different skill sets. I could see Jefferson as the second best player on a traditional contending team, though, and developing into a legit All Star. Those are both very good things, so I don't think that is hating on Jefferson. But I think expecting him to grow into the franchise player on a contender...I think that is unlikely.

I guess "franchise" guy is just someone you build around. In that case Al is that guy. Someone we are trying to put pieces around and someone that is the ID of the team.

Al needs to play defense. You have to play defense. Its not optional for a franchise player.

I don't think there's any argument to support Al being a good defender.

Not like I want him to not be a good defender, I'm not a Big Al hater, I want him to be a super stud like myself, but so far his defense prohibits that. He's not light enough on his feet.

he's a franchise player on the same level as paul pierce and pau gasol. all star but not superstar. i wonder if he's gonna get a shoe contract.

Amare was/still is cosidered a franchise player for the Suns, to a degree that they wouldn't trade him even for KG.
And Amare's D is actually worse then Big Al's.

Why would you build around someone who isn't capable of leading your team to a championship? It's not as if I think we should cut Al or even trade him. I just think we need to look at the situation as if we need a franchise player.
