Calderon play of late = Max Money?

Post#1 » by alfie123 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 2:54 pm

Im loving everything about this guy (minus defense), but looking at his performance do you feel that some team might try and throw a max money deal at him?

do you think he would warrant it? PG's do develop a little slower i feel due to learning how to properly organize/run an offense.

Given starter minutes for an entire season i can seriously see this guy averaging over 10apg.

Or am i just crazy for thinking that way??

I think he'd get that kind of money if he was unrestricted, but scince he is I think a more realistic tag is 8

Kidd, Baron, and Bibby are the only guys making the max I think. Don't think Calderond deserves the max, but I'm hoping around 8million.

Steve Nash wasn't the Steve Nash we know today really when he signed his last contract.

There may be only two or three teams able to offer anything more than the MLE, and if one of those teams decides to go nuts on an offer for Jose, BC has shown that he can get pretty fair value in S&Ts (i.e. JJ to Atlanta.)

Regardless, Jose will be a Raptor for a long time, IMO.

the very least around the 10 million mark.

i have nothing to say about his play since tj went down..... our point guard situation is actually better because jose is gettin more minutes. wish we had tj still, but this is the coming out party.

OK, let me explain. Jose Calderon will never in a million years get max money.

He will get 10+ million for sure, honestly I expect TJ to be moved this offseason or maybe even before the deadline and jose getting a big contract from the raps.

The BEST thing about Jose Calderon is that he is not greedy. With his numbers he is deservant of a max, but as a player he is not.

Realistically, 10 is overpaying him. I'd say 7-8+ is guaranteed, which is a good deal. I could see him taking less too.

Does Jose have the potential to be as good as Kidd, Baron or Bibby? I don't think so.

No way Jose even gets $10 million.

Does TJ have much trade value right now? He's a big injury risk... I wonder what they could get for him, if anything.

I still think he will get 6 mill per year on a five year deal with increase of 10%/year

No that's why I said hopefully he gets around 8.

Just pointing out that comparing players to Steve Nash's salary isn't a great comparison because he got paid before he was MVP Steve Nash. Had he gotten paid after he wasn an MVP player he would be making max money.

The Yankees got $7500 from the Cincinnati Reds for Wally Pipp, which was pretty good value in 1926.

Calderon will get the same deal that ford has

my reasoning behind this?

Jose would not want to make the relationship between him and ford anymore sour if he stays here. He would feel they are equal so he would take the same deal.

which I am fine with 17 mill a season for 48 minutes of great point guard play is better than 40 mins of Superstar point guard play for 20 million imho.

I'm with skinny. Maybe a tad bit more, but 10 million is ludicrous. Max money is sheer folly. If any team wants to pay him that much, I'd try and swing a S&T, getting assets and/or a TE, or let him walk.

I don't get it how some of you can not see the potential of Jose?

He is a mature player with a very high bball IQ.
It doesn't get more consistent than JC play.

Next year he'll be even better, he is smart and reads the game really well.

And yes, he we could get around 10 mil if he really wants to.

1) BC signed Nash (though he may have gotten him on the cheap)

2) PGs don't usually get the max. Calderon is not as good this season as Kidd, Iverson, or Baron Davis was when they received their contracts. Max contracts usually go to elite players at the other 4 positions. It's more take than give.....PGs don't get assists unless their teammates score, none of the max money players need a great PG to make themselves look great.

3) To give Jose the max would be the same as saying Calderon means more to the team than Bosh, and is of equal value to KG, Kobe, and LBJ.

4) Jose has been playing more than 40 minutes a night for the past month. Our 3rd string PGs aren't great 2nd stringer when our starting PG has been out out for 5-6 weeks. It skews the numbers.

I'd give him slightly less than TJ, but throw in bonuses based on the number of games he starts (if the CBA allows it).

What will be funny however is the 30 day window Colangelo will have to match any offer fielded by other GMs. This board is gonna go like Mount St Helens.
