Maggette For Terry Trade Was Agreed Upon During Summer?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Jan 23, 2008 6:15 pm

RealGM Staff Report -
The Los Angeles Times reports that the Clippers and Mavericks agreed to a trade that would have sent Corey Maggette to Dallas in exchange for Jason Terry.

Clippers' owner Donald Sterling allegedly refused to approve the trade.

"I would only make deals to help our future -- anything else is suicide," said Dunleavy. "Anything else and you become the New York Knicks . Now if you want to do that and take on big contracts and long-term deals to potentially hit a home run or get some kind of turnaround, that's not the direction I would go as a businessman or if I owned the team."

I've offered this kind of deal on the Trades Board during the summer. I think you could've brought in Boykins as backup PG and have a more complete team this way.

:(... I would have loved to see Maggette in a Dallas uniform, I'm somewhat glad though, I like Jason, and I think we can get it done with him, without him, there's no one really to knock down big shots unless we give it to Dirk.

I'm not sure which way I would have gone on this trade, except it would have meant the end of Ager as a Maverick, that's for sure. Ager would have been cut in order to bring a backup PG.
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

I would have liked this trade. I like JET but in order for this team to be less of a jumpshooting team and attack the basket more they are going to have to bring in players with that mentality. Maggette is that type of players. He draws a lot of fouls because he attacks the basket.

I think he would be a better defender than JET though I can't honestly say I know what kind of defender Maggette really is. He is certainly bigger and stronger and that would help on both ends of the floor.

For what it's worth, Maggette is a Warriors killer.

This trade was brought up about 15 time on various boards and by various people in the offseason. Some variations included Cassell or Mobley as well.

Most fans on both sides liked it, but the topic went dead when they signed Brevin Knight and we signed Eddie Jones.

I don't see how Maggette helps us. Granted he brings athleticism, rebounding, increased free throw opportunities and puts an end to Avery's temptation to go small (possibly save a lot of money too) but we lose our second best shooter and clutch performer. Maybe if we get Cassell into the deal somehow I would support it, but not straight up.

what about:

Terry
Stack
Ager

for

Cassell
Mobley

our lineup:

Harris / Cassell / Barea
Jones / Mobley / Hassell
Howard / Hassell / George
Nowitzki / Bass / Fazekas
Dampier / Diop / Juwan Howard

would give us a good shooter in mobley as a replacement for terry and someone who can teach harris a bit maybe

dont know whether the clips would do that or not

I always love the "We ALMOST traded for someone last year" headlines. That is a bored writer having a beer with a front office underling.

If only. That trade would be great.

Sounds great Catman but why would da Clips do that trade?

Not saying they would, but one reason I can think of is they get a PG and a defensive 2 (younger than Mobley) under contract and not able to bold like Brand, Cassell & Maggette.

Personally, I'd rather leave the Hassell/Cassell exchange out. One Bull fan (clifflivingston) liked a Stack for Duhon & Griffen exchange. If that can be expended to add Fazekas & Ager on our side and Khryapa on there side, we can make 2 trades that would net:

Terry
Stackhouse
Fazekas
Ager

for

Duhon
Maggette
Khryapa
Griffin

I would do that instantly and even throw a 1st to the Clippers.

I was being quite silly at that trade. I cannot pose a good reason why, except to dump cassell and lock in terry for 4 more years.

I think it would have been a great trade for the Mavs.

Maggette is taller and bigger and can defend better than Terry.

Mavs would have lost Terry's great 3 balls though, although I wouldn't have missed them that much with Maggette on the team.

Donald Sterling is NBA poison; if Brand doesn't opt out I'll be surprised...
