OT: 2008 NBA draft...

Post#1 » by theTHIEF » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:30 am

if we get our high 1st round pick, who you got? I know a lot of people want a PG, but my first pick is going to be Serge Ibaka, kid is freak-tastic, I saw him hit 3 3's in a row, 2 of them off steals, that he made, and i saw him in some spanish dunk contest, the basket almost gathered itself and ran away when he came flying down....

after him, im a big Roby fan, there is a lot of skepticism about him, but i see the kid as a JJ Redick meets Rip Hamilton guy, pure stroke, plays the wing nice, long, athletic and can get inside fairly easy, not to mention he seems to have the ability to just tear apart the other teams defense around the rack...

and then Brandon Rush, he reminds me a lot of a taller Roy maybe with more shooting touch and less driving ability...

so

1. Ibaka
2. Roby
3. Rush

Doesn't matter, our organization will figure out a way to screw up once again. It never fails.

Yeah, I'm definitely thinking SG or PF/C.

Although we could also use another PG prospect.
11/18/2017 - I have officially disowned Nikola Vucevic and branded him a loser.

- Skal Labissiere was my guy in 2016 pre-trade. Whoops, but I still believe.
- Malik Monk was my guy in 2017. Whoops(?)
- Mo Bamba was my guy in 2018. TBD.

The thing I wonder about Rush....He plays for Kansas, doesn't he? It seems like a lot of guys who have come out of Kansas haven't exactly torn up the league in the past five years at least (maybe longer). Gooden probably has had the best career of late.

I will be the first to admit, though, that I don't watch all that much college basketball until the Tournament. If I want to do anything else (like work, do laundry, etc.), I have to choose most weeks between the NBA and college, and I prefer to watch the NBA because they are the best of those guys who already have graduated from college.

Plus, I have no idea where the Magic are going to be drafting. I don't think it's going to be in the top 10 spots so that probably means that they should trade the pick.

well he did say 5 years (even though i thin Gooden is outside of those parameters) AND Kirk has been going backwards and not forwards since his hot arrival...

Kirk is not having a great season himself so far.

I guess Gooden probably does go beyond those parameters because he is in his sixth season in the league.

But Pierce goes way beyond. This is his 10th season.

Ibaka is interesting but probably too raw to come in and do much. Roby will be lucky to be drafted and won't sniff the first round. He can't shoot like Redick and he can't do anything like Rip. Rush is an option IMO. The way I see it we have 3 choices...PG, SG, big man. Here IMO are some options that both could happen and would be solid choices for the Maigc.

PG: Jamont Gordon, Ty Lawson (if he slips)
SG: Brandon Rush, Bill Walker, Bryce Taylor, Kyle Weaver, Shan Foster
Big: Serge Ibaka, Josh Hytvelt, Patrick Patterson, Nathan Jawai, Devon Hardin, DJ White, Jeff Pendergraph

I don't know much about the depth of the upcoming draft, but I do know that Ibaka has a way to go before he is NBA caliber. The kid seems to have decent off the ball defensive instincts, but he wouldn't be able to play defense like that in the NBA. He's too awkward and gets the majority of his points/rebounds/blocks from playing against weak competition.

The draft doesn't matter to me though. I'm pretty pessimistic when it comes to our GMs picking someone that can actually contribute.

couple pickup games back..i blocked a kid shooting a 3 so nasty.. it was kobe style straight up. i then gathered myself and got the ball falling out of bounds but had to throw it out because I was in a bad position.

I love teh blocks. its probably the funnest part of basketball. I avg like 3 blocks a game in pickups. The best is blocking from behind on a fast break when they think they have an easy layup..you just come out of no where and do a tayshaun on reggie except I don't get high enough to hit it hard off the backboard:(

it was sort of like this block:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=EGJ_KiGWoRI

/end whack comment that has nothing to do with the thread.

but yeah that kid looks freakish

i hope we trade jj+players and move up if we dnt plan on using jj anyways...we can get a pg or a PF who can rebound.

2008 NBA Draft

Post#14 » by LetItRain » Sat Jan 26, 2008 9:16 pm

Thanks for the merge.

Assuming the Magic land in the early-mid 20 range, I'd like to see them get Patrick Patterson, 6'8" PF for Kentucky. He's averaging 16.8 pts and 8 reb. I watched him on TV the other day and I was very impressed. He can score in the low post, is strong and athletic, and puts effort into defense. Since the Magic need a PF, I thought this guy might be a great fit.

NBAdraft.net has him going at 17, but some other sites I checked (nba draft press, realgm) have him going later.

I'm making my push for us to get the Greek stud:

Kid can do anything and would be the perfect PF for Dwight.

The Magic probably draft in the 18-22 range next year. Serge Ibaka will clearly be in that range.

Anyhow, the Magic look to draft BPA. That is almost certain a forward next year (all the poll sites have the mid-first loaded in PFs.)

I know he has alot of questions about skills in the NBA. But I think Tyler Hansbrough is interesting. Great post skills but the one thing is he loves to play. He plays with fire. He plays fearless, check out his dunk on the 7'6 kid. I know hes not athletic and his defense is prolly suspect, I dunno. But I love the way he plays the game. I think ppl have some of the same questions about him that they did with Boozer. Brandon Rush is alos on my short list. Kevin Love is another guy that is very intriguing to me. Very athletic and has alot of upside. Then guys like Devon Hardin, Richard Hendrix, and DJ White will be there possibly. We should have some very good options.
