Although I'm not a big Celtics fan, I'm hoping they win the 'chip this year because the Big 3 deserve it. Unfortunately, the telling story this year is that Boston is one big man away from winning in the playoffs. Pollard hasn't gotten enough pt to justify him being the other big.
Here's a list of bigs I thought Boston has a logical chance at trading for at the deadline. This has probably been posted already over the season, but here it goes nonetheless.
Atlanta: Zaza Pachulia*

Cleveland: Dwayne Jones* (already on the team, traded for Luyke Jackson, but in limited minutes, shown he can bang without giving up a lot).
Dallas: Desagana Diop or Brandon Bass* (both are pivotal to their success, but the Mavs could get swindled for one or the other with a pick.)

I just don't see were we need another big man. Who are we trying to match up with that we need bigs for? Everybody wants to go small not big down the stretch of games. POR in a year or two may change that but for now Posey is the prototype back up forward for a championship caliber team and Davis has been great in the post. Not just effective but smart. Pollard is fine to provide size if that is what is needed.
Ball handling guard with some size who can defend is what we need to shop for.

And that excludes Mighty Mouse. I really don't want Stoudamire. I really don't think he's that much of an upgrade over Tony and/or House. He can bring the ball up, but what else is going to do for you? Think he would have done a better job defending Calderon the other night? I don't. I think he would be on the bench with Rondo while Tony is in the game defending whatever point guard Rondo might have trouble with. I say if Caseell isn't available, go with what we have and get him in the offseason.

There is nothing on that list that if both attainable AND helpful. Diop is excellent defensively, and more athletic than Perk, but right now we have rags on the trading front. Bass is nice too, though how many undersized 4's can you have.
Otherwise these guys are rags. I think Ratliff will ultimately be resigned, he was playing early in the year, and it is so low risk when he gets bought out, which will likely be very soon

Well, you're right, and you're not right.
Against the elite team's first units, the Celtics biggest weaknesses are:
1. Center - Perk gives 7 and 5.5 in 25 mpg. He's 23, he will get better, he's BYC, and he will be here for years on his favorable contract.
2. Backup Center - Garnett actually plays about 12 mpg here, so the void is more like 11 mpg. Scot Pollard is recovering from an ankle injury. He has the size, experience, skill, hands and toughness (plus an outside jumper, that I wish he would use) to provide what the Celtics will need in the playoffs. He can bang with the Oberto's of San Antonio, Yao, Bynum, Illgaukas, Mohammed, Varejo, Howard, Dampier.
Unrestricted Free Agent Centers This Summer:
Kurt Thomas, Brian Skinner, Jake Voskuhl.
Celts will probably try to sign one of the above this summer, using the MLE.
3. Backup Ball Handler
Unrestricted Free Agents This summer:
Carlos Arroyo, Beno Udrich, Chris Duhon, Tyronn Lue, Keyon Dooling
If Sam Cassell doesn't get bought out,
Celts could try to trade Scalabrine to Chicago for Chris Duhon. If Chicago thinks that Duhon won't re-sign, and they want to keep $3 million of salary on the books for trades, then they might try to send Duhon to a team that he will likely re-sign with. Celts would probably just wait until this summer. Atlanta would have no interest in swapping Lue for Scal.
4. Backup power forward - Powe & Davis live off PGA, just like Perk. They can't get their own shots or create anything. Defensively, they are no where near as mobile as Posey. Scal is supposed to provide a 6' 9" 3 point shooter, but he is having the worst year of his career (27%), and doesn't rebound. Not much the Celts can do here.

The problem is not so much a lack of planned-rotation players as a lack of injury (or foul) backups.
That said -- across the board, the Celts lack the chips to trade for anybody who'd be an upgrade. Guys who for various reasons it would make no sense to trade include (but are not limited to):
Perkins
Garnett
Pierce/Posey
Allen/Allen
Rondo/House
Since the Cs can't trade any of their first for the next three years, that basically means their only trading chip of more value than a 2nd round pick is Davis.
Not much is going to happen until, either via mid-season buyout or in the offseason, more vets become available who are willing to come here for short money.
I agree with the theory that the Cs would love to get solid vet backup center for the full MLE. That addition, plus the retention of every but Powe (who I regretfully believe is gone), would leave us in very good shape, the questionable PG backup situation notwithstanding.
One cap point to remember is that you can re-sign anybody for up to 120% of their prior year's salary, as a Non-Bird Exception. So Posey and House can get modest raises without using the MLE/LLE.

I think we could definitely use another banging center. Dwayne Jones would be a pretty good fit to back up Perk. He's probably not as strong as Perk, but he's more athletic and I'd be shocked if he didn't have better hands. He'd probably average more points off the bench than Perk does starting by simply not gathering himself like Perk does.
Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
