What would you do to get Lamar going Offensively

Post#1 » by B-Scott » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:39 pm

This is not a trade Lamar thread or Lamar can't do anything.

If you were the coach what would you try to do to get him going on offense? Break down his strength and weaknesses and try and play more to his strengths. We know he isnt very good playing without the basketball, and is much better with the ball in his hands. The team is 27-14 and if they want to stay between 5 and 6,the minset from the coaching staff can't be, Figure it out on your own Buddy. That attitude will have this team drop from 13 games over 500 to barely over 300.

Here are some suggestions from me. Please chip in with your own

1. Start Turiaf at Center and change up the roles of the C and PF. Considering Turiaf has the better Mid-Range jumper, have the offense start with the PF in the low post which would be Lamar. Usually the triangle when ran properly starts with the center. It makes more sense in this case with the 1st initial post entry pass going to Lamar because Turiaf can knock down that 15 footer like Horace Grant.

2. 2 man game between Lamar and Kobe with pick and rolls. Usually Kwame will set the screen for Kobe, but Kwame has bad hands so when Kobe delivers the pass it results in a drop. Change things up a little bit and have LO set the screen for Kobe and roll to the basket. Do it early and often to get the rythym down. The more you work on it,the better you become at it. I don't understand why we never run pick and rolls with these two.

Playing off tbe ball is not his game, but that shouldn't be the end to him having success as a offensive player. There are other things you can do to get his offense going. He will never average 20 and 10,but he has proven he can average 17 and 10 or 16 and 10. He's not even doing that right now.

I would try to get B-scott to flat out say Lamar sucks, that, I think would light up Lamars a$$ and get him going. :P

i think starting turiaf would benefit the entire team, especially odom. odom likes to create, so does walton, and kwame can't finish. odom is always setting up kwame, when he misses it hurts lamar's effectiveness. with turiaf in, odom can go back to being a 4th option, something he should always be. anything more and he starts pressing. with his limited skills that combination is going to make him look like crap.

all of odom's points should come from hustle plays. thats on him. he has the offensive skills of a hustle player. i'm just amazed at how many people actually expect him to be a 2nd option. why? he has a shaky jumper, has no real post moves except passing off, he drives to the left everytime, and isn't even high percentage on his layups. expecting him to step up is just asking for frustration. save yourselves the headaches.

LO is a stat filler, he will never be a second option, unless he gets hot, which is one in every 7 games, but hell who couldn't do that.

We tried everything to make him a second option, it didn't work out. The only results from forcing to be a second option is that he'll get more turn overs or have bad shooting per, so it's best bet is to let him hide in the shadows and fill up the stat sheet behind Bynum. He's just a bad decision maker, I think he needs to ease on the weed. :o

"Lamar doesn't have that same ability to know how to get his own shot out of the offense the same way [Bryant does]," Jackson said. "Kobe can manipulate the offense to fit kind of how his profile is going to be that night. Lamar needs to start to do that. That's some of the things we've asked him to do and asked the team to help him to do."

Phil should try bringing LO off the bench as a six man. Start Ronnie instead and have a lineup of:

Kobe
Luke
Fish
Kwame
Turiaf

Not only that but Lakers have to get LO in the mindset that he is not a top tier player and that he shouldnt expect top tier money when his contract is up.

I think we should just sit tight and wait, as painful as it might be, for our MVP to get healthy.

I think we need to start Sasha, Famar or Turioff for now because when Fisher is not hitting his jumpers, then there is no other 2nd option because we know Luke, Odom, and Kwame doesn't like the spot light. They tend to be passive or overpass and it hurts the Laks and when they try to be aggressive they just suck more w/ turn overs or bad shooting decisions.

Honestly B .
I know that you started this thread by , this is not a trade L.O thread .

But I personally feel that L.O days are N# here in LakerLand.
He isnt what we traded for , he isnt our second option , and he will never be our second option.

Our only option is to trade him and try to get something back hopefully with the same value , which really isnt much , since Im sure every G.M is aware of L.O value to the Lakers .
Yet Im hoping that there is one team that L.O can be usefull for , and he can be happy playing there .

I like Lamar , its just I feel he hasnt fullfilled his obligations nor has he ever been consistant in his perforamce .

Dont get me wrong he has come through at times , but not consistantly like we have expected from him .

Again thats only IMO .

But a question to you .

Feel free to answer it if you like.
I have always wondered this .
If L.O gets traded are you still a Laker fan or No.
I guess my question should be , are you a Laker fan or a L.O fan .

I have always wanted to know that .
Im not B.S I really like to know .

Again thats up to you if you like to reply back .

I have a better question, if Lamar is going to be such a little %43%@ on offense and stand on the perimeter while moving Luke inside why not replace Luke with Ronny inside?

On defense Lamar is the same on SFs as he is on PFs. However Ronny is far better on PFs.

By doing this as well as playing Sasha instead of Kwame on some occasions (shifting down the entire lineup from SG to C) we completely eliminate Luke Walton.

Kwame is starting and I mean that just barely starting to play a bit better and is providing a relatively efficient presence offensively believe it or not.

Lamar's expectations I guess must be lowered once again to say 12 and 7 from now on.

why would anyone lower their rebounding expectations of odom to 7? other than last night when he grabbed 2, he's been awesome on the boards.

Because I can foresee a move of Lamar to SF, since he's been basically playing like one lately.

wrong.

why on earth doesn't the low post offense (while Bynum is out) run through Lamar. set picks, cut to the basket, just get open. Lamar has good passing ability and he can find the open man. if he's left one on one, he has an array of low post moves and length to get buckets. instead we leave him on the perimeter and ask him to create his own shot, something that isnt quite his strengh

"Array of low post moves" ?

What exactly would those be?

Check out the highlight from when he was with the Heat

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ISb_o2RcAxo

The 2nd clip in the video with him from the post. That was a great move. He quickly faced up the defender, did a jab step to his left and did a drop step and finished with the dunk.

He has the drop step in his arsenal to go with his ability to go left. I think it's about using him there more often.

It seems like LO has forgot his own moves.

Lamar can score in the post... we have watched him average 19 and 13 in the playoffs the last 2 years... hes just not confident right now... I dunno what it is but something is wrong

maybe crazyeights is right... hes scared he might get traded... or maybe he is playing crappy on purpose so that he wont get traded.... I think Lamar knows he is not worth his contract and he will never be an All Star... maybe thats eating at him

To me it seems like he forgot the moves that he can do. I see drop step moves in his arsenal on certain highlights from the past, but he isnt doing it now. Maybe it's because of not getting the ball there enough to get a rythym. The Heat went to him so much in the post, that he started getting confident in that area on the floor and he started busting out some decent looking post up moves.

He has no confidence right now at all

First of all, this is a highlights video. Look up Smush Parker on youtube. Is he the next Vince Carter? Why doesn't SMush doesn't dunk all the time, he's so great at it.

Second, that youtube of Lamar is exactly what he is: an uptempo player who drives to his left. Ironically, 75% of that video shows Odom driving in transition and finishing with his left. That's his one consistent move. Even in highlights.

Also, none of those highlights showed Lamar with his back to the basket, because Lamar doesn't score with his back to the basket.

Lamar is a face-up player who will try to lay the ball in with his left hand. That's the extend of any "post move" he has.

If you want to define "post move" as a layup, then Tony Parker is the best post player in the league.
