Indiana is falling apart, they starting off well but have faded. Now O'Neal is gone for a while, possibly the year and they don't have much hope. Atlanta is playing decent and they could definitely grab one of the last two playoff spots. New Jersey is a complete unknown, they could turn it around like they did last year and go on a serious run or they could blow it up and sink in the standings. Chicago for as bad as they have played still have legitimate shot at the 7th or 8th seed because the East is so bad. The other teams (Philly, Charlotte, and NY) I don't see making it with severe flaws in each roster. If I had to guess on how the season finishes I would probably have:
1) Boston (barring injury to KG)
2) Detroit (consistent as always)
3) Orlando (unlike last year they won't fall apart, they have an easy schedule now)
4) Cleveland (they're starting to roll and could win 50 games)
5) Toronto (we have a better 2nd half schedule and should be right in the mix for 3rd with Orlando and Cleveland
6) Washington (playing really well this year and will be in the hunt for 3rd, 3-6 could go any way)
7) Chicago (they'll finally get it going and make it)
Atlanta (bad team but makes it in the weak east)

Of all the teams fighting for the 7/8 seeds, I think that Atlanta is clearly the best of the bunch. They're athletic, they rebound, they play defense and they have guys that can score when needed.
And if the Hawks can pull off a trade for Andre Miller at the deadline, they might be able to make a serious run at the 6th seed.

Atlanta should make it. They have the best talent among all those teams. But the last spot is a crap shoot.
NJ - Loser of 9 straight and going nowhere. They have a very tough schedule, plus all the trade rumors involving Kidd and Carter.
Indy - No Jermaine for a while. Not that he would provide much help since he's not 100%. Their defense is horrid, and they don't have much of a back court.
Milwaukee - Team is disarray. If you asked me, who's the worst player on that team, I would have a hard time coming up with an answer, since there are so many candidates. Simmons, Ivey, Gadzuric, Charlie Bell, Mason all merit that title, and what's worse is that with the exception for Ivey, the other players are locked into long contracts.
Chicago - A mess. Deng is hurt, they probably won't rush him back until he's 100%. They can't score. Chicago is the worst offensive team in the league and yet they played the worst offensive player (Ben Wallace) over 30 minutes. No wonder they can't score.
Charlotte - They played most of their games at home already. The rest of their schedule is absolutely brutal. They weren't any good with the easy schedule to begin with.
Philly - Playoffs is probably the worst possible scenario for this team. They need more young talent, and I think they will trade Miller by the trade deadline.
Knicks - If the Knicks get the 8th seed, would Isiah receive a lifetime contract with the Knicks? They actually let Biedrins have 26 rebounds last night. 26!!! I like Biedrins, but 26 rebounds!!! They must have the worst front court on defense in the history of the NBA.
So in short, none of them are capable, but if I have to choose one, I would go with the Bucks. Bogut is starting to play better and Redd is still playing at a very high level. They have a good home record, so that's better than most teams on this list.
