Chris Paul
I know, everyone hates the comparisons, however, it has been 2.5 seasons and we should have a better idea now of the positives and negatives of each player. Personally, I have always been a fan of both players, but I have always thought Paul should have been picked. If any of you guys were KOC 4 years ago would you still pick Williams over Paul? Why?

The only thing Paul does significantly better then Deron is steal the ball. Other then that I find them to be equal in every other facet of the game and the whole Deron has a more veteran staff BS needs to stop. Paul has all the similar pieces as Deron. West...Boozer, Memo.....Chandler, Peja....Korver. I think both players were the perfect fit for where they are.
I just think its funny how people say he is vastly superior. If Deron averaged 1 more rebound, point, assist and steal they would have identical numbers.
They are both definitely the Kidd and Nash of the future. Its to early to say which one is better for either team, because neither has done anything for his team (no titles).

Yes, Williams for sure. For many reasons:
1) Its unfair to compair their rookies seasons, because Williams was held back by Sloan (as are all Sloan rookies). Williams dropped 18pts in his first NBA game ever against the Mavs (who went on to have the best record). THen he got benched, played out of positions, etc.
2) Williams has proven himself in the playoffs, against a dynasty team no less...
3) Williams is a better shooter from the field and has better range.
4) Williams is/has been/will be more durable IMO....
5) CP3's supporting cast is better than advertised. West is a beast, chandler is a monster, and Peja has been one of the most feared deep threats since he's been in the league...and everyone has stayed healthy, much like Utah did last season....

I think Paul is a great young PG, whi is having an excellent season, but I said from day 1 that WIlliams is the right choice......
Deron is bigger, actually faster than Paul, is a better finisher, able to post up smaller guards, and just as good of a defender (steals don't equal great defense, unfortunately as Brewer has displayed this season)

I'd still take Paul. But, it's not an easy descision. Paul is a better rebounder, and better at steals, and better at creating. He's more consistant as well in my opinion. It seems like Paul never has a bad night, where Deron puts out some stinkers, heck, Deron has bad weeks.
Deron has his advantages, in size, and physicality, and durability. And those things weigh heavily for him. But, I'm still gonna take Paul over him. It's not terrible, it's like PIcking Bird over Magic. You could argue either way, and either way you go you're getting a terrific player.

"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

I was thinking of the exact same comparison earlier today. My question is: How different would the Jazz be if they had drafted Paul instead of Deron and how many Hornets fans would trade us Paul for Deron outright right now?
I recognize that both are hypotheticals, but I think that Paul would have taken the Jazz as far as Deron did last year, and that there would be a lot more buzz about the Jazz this year if Paul were on the team.
To be very fair, Deron has had two pretty stupid / questionable incidents while a Jazzman (the bar scuffle in Park City, and the really poor discretion shown by him, Dee, Brewer and Milsap in Portland early last year) whereas Paul has kept completely out of trouble.
I like Deron a lot, my kids and I have shook his hand, got autographs from him, that sort of thing, but I think that the Kidd / Nash comparisons are pretty good. The general NBA consensus is that Paul is about 10-15% a better player than Deron is; this year's performance by Paul supports that argument.
Deron is a great player, could be an all-time Jazz and NBA great, but Paul is equally and likely more talented overall. There isn't a Hornets fan that would trade Paul for Deron right now, but I think about 20-30% of Jazz fans would trade Deron for CP3 today without blinking an eye.
Before you start bashing, I'm a lifelong Jazzfan / season ticket holder. The career span will tell the tale, and Deron's durability could easily allow him to have a more productive NBA career..

DW turns the ball over more than CP3, but I do like his outside shooting better. Sometimes DW tries to be too fancy, and other times he can't finish a drive because he misses or gets blocked.
I'd still take DW, but the next game @ NO should be very interesting. Hopefully we can get it together on the road by then.

Kidd has been to the finals twice. How many times has Nash been? I believe Deron will be a better performer in the playoffs. But Paul still has time to prove himself....

No, let's not move on. This is a great debate, and well worth discussing as new developments occur. This is what sports is about, determining who is better.
Now, I won't attempt to make the "who should we have taken with the pick" argument. That is nearly impossible to determine, because the way a player is coached and developed by his coaching staff and the cohesion he has with his teammates is a HUGE part of what makes him what he is.
However, I will say that right now Paul is the better player, by a decent margin. Don't get me wrong, Deron Williams is easily, in my mind, a top 20 player in the NBA, and aside from Nash he is clearly the 3rd best PG in the NBA today--Billups and Baron Davis not withstanding--but he just isn't playing as well as CP is right now. Paul scores more, assists more, steals more, hits at a higher rate from the line, turns the ball over less and carries a bit more of the load than Deron (I won't mention rebounding because it is a non factor for me in evaluating PGs). The only thing that Deron does better statistically is shoot the ball, both from the field and from range--which further raises the question of why the **** Deron shoots so poorly from the FT line.
However, each of these advantages is a small one, as Deron is an excellent passer, scorer, shooter and ball handler. Paul just seems to be a little bit better at most things.
You could make the argument that Paul has the ball in his hands waaaaaay more than Deron does, and that allows him to make more plays. His usage rate is significantly higher, and this allows him to pile up more impressive stats, but that is a fairly weak argument, imo.
My opinion is that Paul is going to be the better player throughout the early stages of their careers, whereas Deron is going to slowly improve through the years and not really hit his prime as a player until his early 30s, at which time Paul will be breaking down and out of the league. Anyways, right now it is obvious that Paul is the better player.
You can argue fit.
You can argue durability.
You can even argue character ()
You can't argue quality of play, though. Paul is better.
For now.

Paul scoring more means nothing because even you mentioned Deron shoots a better percentage so if he took as many shots as Paul, he'd be scoring more than him.....I think Deron's ability to hit the open jumper with a lot more consistency than Paul combined with his ability to distribute the basketball makes him just as good as Paul, if not better...I'd still take Deron if we could re-draft right now.....erudite23 wrote:However, I will say that right now Paul is the better player, by a decent margin. Yeah, I wanted Paul going into that draft, too, and when we made the trade up, I thought for sure that it was to take Paul.
I can't blame anyone for sticking by Deron at this point, because the question of "who should we have taken" is still up in the air. However, the question of "who is playing better this season" is, imo, not debatable. As good as Deron Williams is--and he is probably my favorite player in the NBA right now--Chris Paul is better right now. Denying it, while commendable from a loyalty standpoint, does not make it any less true.

One of the most important stats for me when comparing PGs is assists/turnovers.
CP = 4.03
DW = 2.69
CP scores more, dishes more, turns over the ball less, grabs more rebounds and shoots better from the line. Plus his team has the second best record in the league and ours is, at the moment, not even in the playoffs.
Having said all that, I'm not disappointed with D-Will in any way. But there's no doubt in my mind that Paul is the better player at the moment.

It seemed pretty obvious to me that we were going to take D-Will, given that we worked him out, everybody had great things to say about him and that he seemed like a perfect fit. That doesn't mean that I preferred him to Paul. In fact, up until the tournament, I didn't think there was much of a question as to who the better player and prospect was. After the tournament, I was a huge fan of both, and was ecstatic about the prospect of getting one or the other.
Fast forward to the present, and I have to agree that Paul is easily having a better season than Deron. Does that mean that he is the better player right now. I think you'd probably have to lean towards yes, but I don't think it's quite as indisputable as you make it out to be. Paul is a great basketball player, but he's an even better statistical player, in part because of the situation he's in. He doesn't have to defer to anybody like Deron does with Boozer, and thus gets more shots and more points (Deron has actually been more efficient this year in terms of points per shot, field goal percentage, three point percentage, etc.) and he doesn't have to share playmaking duties with anyone, like Deron does with AK. Also, while Paul might be a better defender than Deron, the disparity in steals per game in no way reflects the actual difference between the two as defenders. Williams, in spite of some of the problems he's had this year, which I think have been overemphasized by some people, is still a terrific fit for this team and a top 3-5 point guard in the league with plenty of room to grow. He has a terrific all around skill set and no glaring weaknesses, so I'm still pretty happy with the pick, especially given that Deron projects to be the more durable player.

I love DWILL, but CP3 is head and shoulder above Deron defensively, its not even close. And Im talking straight up man-on D, not just getting steals. He doesnt let scrubs like Rafer Alston get to the hoop at will, which unfortunately Deron does on a nightly basis. Parker will have his way as far as penetration tonight, you can bank on it. So with the offensive numbers being as close as they are, Pauls defense is what seperates the 2.

Just because Paul averages 1 more thing in several categories doesn't make him the clear-cut better player....I'll take Deron's shooting abilities along with his passing abilities anyday....A deadly jumpshot makes you a much more dangerous player....GO DERON!!!erudite23 wrote:Chris Paul is better right now.
