Steve Novak

Post#1 » by A.J. » Mon Jan 28, 2008 2:47 am

the guy had a career night tonight with 10 points 4/4 Fg's and 2/2 3PTs..

my question is this, do you think Adelman should let Novak have more PT?

Novak is a double edged blade. If he's not hitting 3s, he's giving up points on the other end. Rick made the mistake of leaving him in for the fourth, he should have taken him out when he was getting burned on defense.

Eh, he's a one trick pony. He got abused on the defensive end pretty badly. He was left in the game too long tonight. He should be brought in at the end of quarters and during crunch time if we need a 3. He probably shouldn't play more than 5 minutes at a time, ESPECIALLY if he's not getting touches.

The short answer is no. The long answer is hell no. But what I want to know is how a dude spends all 4 years in the college and is now in his 2nd year in the NBA and still have the arms of a twig? Is the dude allergic to dumbells or something?!

He should have sat down when Tracy sat down to start the 4th. Instead he played and got burned by Ashton Kutcher. Yet another example of Adelman's ineptitude.

YES -- if he's getting touches. He should be used like Matt Bullard was. If he's not on or not getting touches sit him down.

He should only be in stretches when we're struggling for offense or need a three at the end of ball games, because he's just too much of a liability on the defensive end.

Korver got open in the fourth because Novak didn't know what he was doing on defense.

My hope for Novak is that he's eventually good enough at coming in cold to be a possession player - comes in at critical times to have plays run through him, like a DH or a punter. Better would be if he learns to play defense, but the guy has NO athleticism, so that's doubtful.

I couldn't figure out why Adelman left him out there in the fourth when he wasn't shooting either (as I noted in the game thread)

No...
Novak is an awful defender and as a consequence we allowed 37 points in the 4th quarter.

only way Novak can get playing time is do something beside being a spot up shooter
because after he knocked down two 3pts
Utah basically just send someone right in front of him and basically just shut him down
either RA going to make plays for Novak to be poor man Peja or he needs to improve defense big time
he's bad on help defense and yet he leave his man wide open

Utah played Kyle Korver for some heavy minutes today and besides a few possessions where he was stuck on an island guarding McGrady they managed to make him not stick out on defense.

Novak needs a lot of work on D to get to where Korver is, but if he can get his D to that level he'll be a rotation player, like Korver. Right now Novak is just totally lost on defense; he lost Kyle Korver completely on the two possessions where Korver hit the big treys. If he can't guard Korver, he can't guard anyone; hell I wouldn't feel comfortable with him guarding Bruce Bowen at this point.

Um, shouldn't you have used a bad offensive player for your example, rather than another bad defensive player? :droop:

He used Bruce Bowen because Bowen is horrible at offense. I didn't get to see the game last night, but I was very surprised to see that Novak got minutes and actually produced. However, I wasn't surprised to hear that he got blown up on D.

NOVAK IS > KORVER

Korver is actually decent at D, can't say the same for Novak. He's really gotta find a way to defend better if he wants to see playing time, because smart teams will burn him all day.

Korver is better than Novak, but he wasn't a dis-advantage on the defensive end tonight. Hopefully he can keep improving in that aspect, because he really can help us with that shot.
