ESPN Power Rankings -- Week 13

1.) Hornets

We repeat: How could you deny them No. 1? The Hornets are 11-1 in 2008 after spanking the Spurs (in San Antonio!) and have won six straight by at least 14 points. That's happened only four other times in NBA history.

2.) Celtics

Fret, if you wish, about the Celts' 5-5 record since starting 29-3. Or their 6-5 record against the Southeast Division and 28-3 mark against the rest of the league. As long as KG's injury is minor, Boston can live with it all.

3.) Mavericks

Don't think they've got a 37-2 finish stored up to match last season's 67-15. But Dallas is the only team out there placed in the top 10 in scoring (No. 9 at 101.1 ppg) and scoring defense (No. 9 at 96.3 ppg).

4.) Suns

It's true the Suns get nitpicked more than anyone, in spite of the West's highest win total. But that's partly because their rare losses have been headline-makers, like the two in Minnesota and one at home to Miami.

5.) Pistons

Pistons and Celtics, mirroring each others' fortunes now. Just like Boston, Detroit is just 5-5 since the East's top two dueled in Motown on Jan. 5, thanks to a third straight L to Chicago and a home-and-home split with Orlando.

6.) Spurs
7.) Cavaliers
8.) Trail Blazers
9.) Warriors
10.) Jazz

It's so refreshing to see New Orleans at #1. No egos, just a bunch of guys on a team that was never supposed to be as good as they currently are, and now, they're destroying the league's elite.

Hornets with pretty much a clean sweep of all sites with power rankings:

#1 on ESPN
#1 on Hollinger
#1 on NBA.com
#1 on Hoops World
#1 on SI.com

Hornets hype is strong. :winkgrin:

Pretty reasonable rankings, however I guess my homerness will break through a little...I think the Jazz should be ranked higher than Portland. We have identical records, however, the Jazz have gone 8-2 in their last 10 games, while the Trailblazers have gone a mere 5-5. If the rankings are kind of a weekly ranking of how a team has played etc., then the Jazz deservedly should be ranked ahead of the Blazers.

Thats the kiss of death right there. You guys stayed under the radar for a while, now that the spotlight is on something bad will happen, a rolled ankle, or a torn ACL. :wink:

Meh the hornets will lose in the first round. they have virtually no playoff experience.

I think the Magic should be a little higher. 4 wins in the last 5, with wins over Portland, Detroit, and Boston. Only loss was against Detroit.

Didn't matter for the Warriors or Jazz last year, did it? Hornets have more "playoff experience" than both of those two teams combined on last check.

(Peja, Peterson, Chandler, Jackson, Pargo, Butler, Ely)

Oh, and they have Chris Paul, who, playoff-hardened or not, nobody wants to deal with for a 7 game series.

dont waste your time 2poor...relish in it, Hornets are nasty right now...I bet they are glad they didnt add another 6'11 guy off the bench...

10th or 11th would have been better for the Magic but 12th is nice and i'll take it...

Add West to that list. While he doesn't have a whole lot of experience, David West was a rookie when the Hornets played Miami in the playoffs.

jazz should beat a good team before getting too high in the ranks. They beat Houston sans Yao, but have lost to Portland minus Roy and at Denver. They hit their cake stretch of their schedule and are doing work..they are fine where they are.

Kings are #17 for ALL of the power rankings...Eh, that is not a THAT bad of a ranking considering various factors IMO....

The Celtics have been looking like crap lately. I wouldn't have been mad if they dropped to 5.

What? Utah is on the rise while Portalnd has stalled so I may agree on Portland but the Jazz are at least one spot too low. Nuggets fans should be preparing themselves for even more of a slide.
