I hate to say it, but the reason we don't give him touches is that he doesn't have that many moves. he has like 2 go-to moves and that is it. If we give it to him all the time, they will figure it out and either strip him or take a charge. Its really not the fault of the offense, Dwight needs to expand his game so we can get different touches to him. he also struggles A LOT trying to pass out of double teams
Whether you think you CAN or you think you CAN'T, you're right.

A couple of things:
That's not really an article, that's just some dude's blog.
I hate how it seems like people will just watch one game and then act as if that one game is an accurate measurement of a team and all of their traits. I'm not just talking about this blog entry either, hell Charlie Rosen does it for FoxSports.
For example, this statement is absolutely ridiculous:
Are you kidding me?
Both carry themselves like superstars?
Rashard has been playing within the system just about as good as he can (some even fault him for it), and he constantly delivers the ball to Dwight from out at the three point line.
I rarely ever see Rashard take atrocious shots.
I don't know his basis for that comment about Hedo either. Hedo has had the ball in his hands a lot lately, but that is because he has been our best playmaker and distributer, especially with Jameer out. He has also been getting to the line a lot and making them as well.
Admittedly, Hedo does take some poor shots from time to time, but he actually makes a lot of them (see: game winner), and the positives he has been bringing while in this role have far negated any poor shots that he may take from time to time.
Hedo, too, is also one of the best at getting Dwight the ball, and he has been for a while.
As for Jameer: Well, we know he isn't John Stockton or Steve Nash, but he also does a pretty good job at getting Dwight the ball. We've been missing some of that lately with Carlos running the point. Notice how when Jameer is playing we see at least one drive to the paint which ends up being underhand tossed up to Dwight cutting to the rim for a thunderous alley-oop. How many time have you seen Arroyo do that? We're missing our starting point guard! But I guess you don't realize stuff like this when you only watch us on Sunday ABC games. By the way, just for kicks, Jameer is 10th in the entire NBA in assists on a per-minute basis.
When will people understand that simply looking at his FGA does not give an indication of how much he gets the ball?
Let's break it down:
Every time that someone passes Dwight the ball and he goes up for a shot, gets fouled and misses the shot, there is no field goal attempt recorded. (There is also no chance for that pass to be recorded as an assist either, for what it's worth) What you will see recorded however is 2 free throw attempts...
Dwight is #1 in the league in FTA, by a huge margin.
Put the two together.
Look back at Shaq's old per minute numbers: He was barely logging more field goal attempts (one or two more) than Slava Medvedenko, Tracy Murray, Kareem Rush, Gary Payton, Dorell Wright, Rasul Butler, Antoine Walker and Wang Zhi Zhi.
By the way, in those stats referenced, one of those people ahead of Dwight in per minute shot attempts is Bo Outlaw in his whopping 7 minutes played, which is an obvious outlier.
Pardon the rant, but I just get annoyed when we play a nationally televised game and then all of a sudden all of these people pop out of nowhere, take a one game sample, look up a few [distorted] stats, and then try to make all of these grand conclusions. Watch the damn games.

Obviously, it isn't hard to figure out why Howard is denied the rock. He's surrounded by poor passers. Some Orlando players simply lack tremendous skill in that area (see: Maurice Evans), but in most cases it is because the members of the Magic suffer from a terrible case of "get-mine-itis." Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis both carry themselves like superstars and take atrocious shots on a regular basis.

[Update: After posting this, I went back and checked the stats for the season and Howard currently ranks well behind both Lewis and Turkoglu in field goal attempts per game. Furthermore, he's only sixth on the team in FGA's per 48 minutes, which is just ridiculous. When you consider how many attempts come from his own offensive rebounds, it is increasingly apparent that he is actually thrown the ball about 10 times a game. I am growing more angry about this by the second.]

What?
Hedo Turkoglu has been the best player on the team this season, thank you very much.
I agree that Howard needs more attempts, but he also needs to be more consistent from the FT line. A lot of the time he'll only have like 8-10 attempts, but be 7-14 from the line.

devin is the man. I didn't even read the entire article but I was about to bring up the FT attempts until I saw your post. Dwight has a good 5-6 FGAs taken away from him because of fouls every night.
Dwight gets passed the ball, maybe at times he should be passed to more, yes. But for the most part I think we give it to him a decent amount.
edit: and yea, BAF, Hedo has played great but Dwight is an MVP candidate for a reason.

Dwight was getting the ball a lot earlier in the season and not just in the 1st quarter like he is now. What was he doing? Dominating? 30 point games like it's nothing. What were the Magic doing? Winning convincingly.
Now he get's the ball in the 1st quarter, sits out half of the 2nd quarter. Then when he gets in they look for him maybe 3 or 4 times for the quarter. Plays almost all the 3rd in which they look for him occasionaly. Plays at least 8 minutes of the 4th in which he recieves maybe one pass. So how's that going? His scoring is way down. And the Magic? They are either scraping by through the skin of their teeth or losing badly.
His offense is good enough. He's our best player at putting the ball in the hole. Period. He doesn't get the ball nearly enough. That's just the way it is, and the Magic will be a 1 and done team until it changes.

shaq never took less than 16FGA in his first ten nba seasons , with 9 of them being above 18FGA, and also averaged around 10FTA. not saying dwight is on shaqs level offensively but come on only 12FGA per game? i'd be happy with a consistent 14FGA but he doesn't even get that. dwight howard isn't the greatest at passing out of double teams and also doesn't have much outside the paint but he can score at will in the paint. ultimately 12FGA for your franchise center is just plain stupid. dwights actual involvement in the offense is really less than that if you factor in that some of those attempts are basically "garbage points." dwight must be the center of the offense if this team is going anywhere. and our team needs to move around more when howard gets the ball and not just stand at the damn 3 point line. use cutters more often. for example those dump offs to evans for easy dunks.

Yep, Shaq would touch the ball almost every time when he was in the game. I guess it helps when there is an extremely gifted passer with a high basketball IQ called Penny Hardaway running the show.
Dwight isn't Shaq... yet. But this season on offense he has shown that he's not as far away as some would think.
