Rasho's contract next year
I've spent some time lurking around on these boards and have been shocked to find out that some people want Rasho to opt out to sign a lesser long term deal. Next year come trading deadline, that expiring could solve our needs at the swing position or bring in a banger. Remember Golden State got Baron Davis for Dale Davis' expiring I believe. We could be in a situation where a package of Rasho and maybe one of our point guards (if Ukic comes over) could bring us someone who could put us over the top.
Thoughts?

The thing is that if we factor Calderon and Delfino's new contracts (assuming they resign), our 2 draftpicks and potential MLE signings, we won't have much capspace at all. Assuming TJ is healthy and Roko performs well (which by all the hype seems like he will), a package of rasho and calderon along with draft picks could be very appealing to a rebuilding team.

Can someone tell me when an Elite 5 man is going to be a UFA??
Because 2-3 position is a dime a dozen... Parker, Moon, Delfino, Kapono are better together than an elite 2-3 because they are all indivuals that have skills and when combined are better than almost any single wing player or at least comparable. For all we know, we draft a 2-3 and we never have to worry about the possition again for a long time. whereas a 5 Man in next to impossible to find.
If there is going to be a legit one UFA any time soon I say we let Rasho and guys expire and sign him.

[quote="Warya"]I think BC is planning something involving that... That's probably our best trading asset if combined with other contracts and players...
But couldn't we just let it expire, make a few more trades to clear cap space, and use the cap space to sign a big free agent, ie Iguodala?[/quote
How are we going to clear capspace? All our players have reasonable contracts maybe except for Kapono who is set to make 6.2 million in 08-09. No team is going to trade an expiring for Jason Kapono. The combined contracts in 09-10 of Bargnani, Bosh, Ford, Calderon (assuming he signs for 9 mill, which will increase per year) is already at least 40 million. Add in the contracts of Kapono, draft picks, Delfino, Humphries, Moon's extension, we won't have much more than the MLE. Unless you're willing to sacrifice our bench in the 08-09 season for a big name free agent in 09-10, we won't have the capspace we've been dreaming of

I'm going to assume that Calderon is going to earn in the $7-8M salary and I don't think that this team needs both AP and Delfino by the end of next season (I would probably expect that Delfino signs for $3.5-4). So in total, the salaries coming off the books are $21.72M (i.e. Rasho, AP, Garbo, Baston, Graham). The extra salary from extensions to Jose and Delfino (AP will be old for a SG) is in the neighbourhood of $7M. Factor in Ukic's salary too (I'm sure it won't be that much) and their 1st round pick, they could potentially have substantial cap space. I think that good depth is much easier to acquire than frontline talent. You can always find a Posey, or some other vet in the twilight of their career that is willing to work for cheap.

Assuming those things you just mentioned, we'd be under the Cap by about $6 million in the summer of 2009. So pretty much we have no advantage over the MLE. So I think what BC would do is trade one of TJ or Jose either before that summer to bring in "that" guy we need, or he will trade one of them in the summer as part of a S&T

Keep TJ/Jose/Roko. TJ and Roko are unknowns at this point.
At the deadline next year, unless we are just killing everyone, get the best 2/3/5 you can for Rasho/Parker/Garbo/Joey/Baston. Thats something like $15-$20 mil in salary right there depending on the combination.
So who is the disgruntled all-star going to be next year...predictions?

Actually, it would be over $10M. How much over, I'm not really sure. And BC would have to fill out the roster too. But, I wouldn't spend much on the guys at the end of your bench. What's the point of paying more than the minimum to guys like Martin, Graham, Baston not to play? That is where I would go on the cheap. I wouldn't be opposed to trading TJ if the right deal presented itself either. I think in order for this team to take the next step to contention, it is going to have to concentrate it's talent.

Don't say actually unless you actually know.
These are appox figures
Bosh $15.8
Ford $8.5
Kapono $6.2
Bargnani $6.5
Humps $3
Thats $40 million already signed
Most likely additions
Jose $8.5
Delfino $4
Roko $2.5
Draft pick '08 $1.5
We can then sign Moon, 2009 draft pick(s) after we make our major signing.
That brings the total to $56.5
Based on how the Salary cap has been increasing the salary cap for the 2009/2010 season should be around $61.5. So we'd be about $5 million under the cap.
Now a lot can happen from now until then, but this is just a basic assumption of what our cap situation will be come the summer of 2009.

Igoudala is for sure going for max money this off season and Philly is most likely going to offer him the closest thing to it.Warya wrote:I think BC is planning something involving that... That's probably our best trading asset if combined with other contracts and players...

I agree with yt_boi on the 40 million part, but not when it comes to the "likely additions" part. I would estimate Jose's contract to be 7.5 instead of 8.5, unless Jose get voted in as an all-star.
And with Roko, he is a second rounder, and as far as I know, few second rounder ever makes over a million. Furthermore, the draft pick of 08/09 can very well be an euro pick who will not be on the Raptor's roster at that time.
So, if we chose not to keep Delfino and opt for a one year filler instead for the duration of 08/09, based on my speculation, the Raptor's salary would be 48.5 million by 2009/2010. Then by yt_boi's estimated salary cap, we would be 13 million under the cap, which is enough to land us a top-notch all star.
I think it makes more sense for us to get rid of Delfino, for if we are going to add another all star player, it probably would be a swingman, thus overlaps Delfino's position. Moreover, this gives us more flexibility with Bargnani, too. The Raptors has the team option on him at around 6.5 million in 2009/2010, so in case that Andrea doesn't pan out, we would have a total of 19.5 million to fix 2 positions. It is a far more desirable situation in my opinion.

I think we'll see BC take advantage of Rasho's expiring contract this summer and use him as the centerpiece in some sort of deal. With Calderon and Delfino as RFAs, and warranting and hefty pay raise, I'm not so sure we will just let him (and others) expire as our cap space will not be as large as maybe we anticipated.
