OT: Down three with 2 seconds left do u foul?

Post#1 » by tlsbucks » Tue Jan 29, 2008 8:35 pm

I was left questioning LK's move here on Sunday. I know they won but still why wouldnt u just do this? If the Bucks are up 3 with a few seconds left why not foul and give them no chance to make a 3...you secure the player with a good wrapup when he touches the ball...even if he shoots which he wont but still he wont hit the three and be forced to make 3 FT's. Also 3 FT's on the road or even at home are tough with small time left. No matter how many seconds play the foul and chase with them. We have good FT shooter in Redd(I know he didnt play sunday) and Mo and also other have been good from the line aka simmons yi

Depends on how much time is left on the clock

If the shot clock is dark, then I suggest you foul, let them shoot two free throws instead of having the opportunity for the 3 pt (or 4 pt) play.

On Sunday the Wiz had no timeouts so they had to shoot a halfcourt shot. I'll take my chances with a halfcourt three over two free throws, especially in a game where we conceded putbacks on missed free throws twice in the final minute of regulation.

And your question should start "Up 3..." since you're talking about the leading team's perspective.

I believe LK intended to foul actually. If you noticed Jamison shot that ball the minute he touched it, he was anticipating the foul.

As far as when to foul when you're up 3, it all depends on how much time is left.

I'm fouling. Usually the probability of hitting a three is higher than getting an offensive rebound off of a free throw, let alone putting it back up quick.

Fouling every time. I never understood why this isn't utilized more in the NBA. Foul the second someone gets the ball and the you get it back. Game over.

I'd let them shoot the three. Especially if it was the Bucks that we are talking about, who are horrible at defensive rebounding. Also, there are many players in the NBA who are really good at acting like they are going up for a shot after the foul and a lot of refs that are dumb enough to fall for it. I just think you should have enough faith in your defense to defend one three point shot. If you don't then you aren't going to win many games anyway. But what I would do is if I had a foul to give I would foul the other team right when they are starting their play so it gets all messed up. But I don't put them on the line. D up.
