If the Nets throw in either Wright or Nachbar and the Blazers can get a little more protection on that pick, then I'd be all for this deal.

Does extra protection really make much difference?

If Portland doesn't luck into a top 3 then that pick at the very best would be 13th. With Oden & Fernandez coming in next year is that pick that valuable?

I'm okay with NJ sending another player back in the deal as well and would intially offer as such, but it would not be a deal breaker from my point.

I think Kidd certainly fits from the perspective that he can be given a 1 and a half season trial to see where he stands. At that point 1 of 2 things could happen:

1. Portland likes him, and still feels that he has something in the tank. They resign him at a slightly more modest deal and maybe have enough scratch to go after a free agent still.

2. Let him go outright as an expiring deal and still have the cap space that was originally planned.

I wouldn't foresee a sign and trade as a reasonable scenario.

I think a large part of it is how Portland views Kidd. I'm sure Paul Allen can at least recognize the fact that Pippen really was the missing piece to a very good team. Kidd is essentially at the same point in his career as Pippen was when Portland moved for him.

But the bigger question is whether Portland feels that giving up a Webster or Frye while at the same time further hindering the progress of Sergio will outweigh the benefit that Kidd could possibly bring. My guess is that Portland still wants to get Sergio into that core and that they may value Frye and or Webster higher than other teams.

This is a fairly deep draft, so if by some catastrophic reason we end up in the Top 10 after the trade, we could miss out on some pretty nice talent. It definitely says something when a player as good as Kevin Love isn't even being projected as a lotto pick.

All that said, the extra protection isn't as important as getting back a SG/SF with either Wright or Nachbar. That's actually quite important to fill out our depth chart.

Would no protection on a pick next year work better than a protected pick this year? Since they will be losing Raef's deal at that time, it is possible they might like no protection over some. Doubtful, since we would be getting Oden back, but I would certainly prefer that. Either way, it owuldn't be a deal breaker for me.

The question then is our SF rotation.

That's why I want to get Nachbar or Wright back from the Nets in a Kidd deal. We can slide Jones into the starting lineup fairly easily, then give backup minutes to whichever SG/SF we get back from the via the trade.

Either that or we can give Miles some PT. :P

*NJ would want more then the Blazers could give.

*Kidd would never accept coming to Portland.
Kidds agent has stated any deal must be to a
team that could win a title. Blazers are not that.

Pretty sure his most recent quotes contradict that, where he says he knows he might not go to a title contender.

As for wanting more, wanting and receiving are two different things. They can want all they want, but they aren't going to get a whole lot more. Is taking on 3 more years of Stackhouse improving he team.

It all depends what Portland is willing to give. If Pritchard is willing to give up a deal like what we've discussed on the board and NJ still wants more, then they'll be stuck with Kidd until he expires.

The Nets aren't going to get a ton for Kidd. As I've brought out before, the number of realistic suitors for Kidd is fairly small. Word is that the Nets don't want to keep Kidd in the East, so that counts some teams that would be interested in him.

Then with the teams in the West, there aren't a ton who can put together a great deal for simply because of the size of his contract.

Kidd himself has said that he realizes he might not be sent to a contender. Plus, coming to Portland from NJ is still an upgrade in situations. On top of all that, Portland would (in all likelihood) be a contender next season when Oden is back. So I don't see this being any sort of a roadblock in bringing Kidd to Portland.

We're not a title contender this year, but we're a playoff team right now. Now take that same roster and add Jason Kidd, Greg Oden and Rudy next year, and you can't tell me it's out of the question for next year and CERTAINLY not for the year after.

The concerns about Jason Kidd negatively affecting Roy to me are only a concern about Roy's stats. Having somebody else share the load can't be a bad thing for Brandon. We don't want to burn him out, he does everything for us right now. And playing next to Kidd, that's the player we want him to turn into (except with a jump shot ;) ) I really don't see the downside. Martell isn't developing the way we thought he would, between James Jones and Rudy, he's not really necessary. Give him up and let's do this.

One thing about Kidd in portland: Kidd seems most effective in an open court game. That isn't the style that portland plays. The blazers don't rebound well enough and don't force enough turnovers.

Do you think Kidd's open court offense would be wasted in portland or would he improve portland's "easy basket" total?

I think he improves Portland's "easy basket" total. I think Kidd ends up making us a more dynamic team. We definitely have players who can play in the open court.

The Blazers (as they are currently constructed) are at their best when Roy is initiating a half-court offense. That wouldn't change by bringing Kidd in. No team plays in the open court all game long. So with Roy, the Blazers are still a good half-court team, and by adding in Kidd, it makes us a really good open-court team as well.

AND... he would probably be our best rebounder

Im all for bringing him in for the right deal.. A player of that caliber is only going to help this young team.. Id be willing to give up a couple of these:

Frye
Webster
Jack
Sergio
1st rd pick

Personally, I like the ideas that Spykes has thrown out here/trade forum. I doubt KP pulls a trigger on anything like this, but I would be ecstatic to have that kind of distributor on this team. Move Outlaw into the starting SF spot and Blake into the backup guard spot. The one reason i could definitely see this working though is because KP has been/is very high on Sergio and bringing Kidd in would be great for him and his development in quite a few ways

Yahoo Sports:
The Celtics would kill for him, the Magic might want a turn, the Rockets would be willing, as would the Cavaliers, and Trail Blazers.

The Nets, on the other hand, finally appear to be cognizant of their situation. They'd likely ask for no more than expiring contracts, some lower-rung draft picks, a talented if-not lottery-level youngster still on his rookie contract, and the ability to send Jason Collins' contract somewhere else. It isn't a fair return, but this is the NBA, the salary cap makes even deals tough to pull off, and that's how it works.

Kidd + Collins

for

LaFrentz + Miles + Frye + Jack + #1 pick, $3MM and a 2nd round pick.

LaFrentz contract comes off when Kidd's does, Miles could be paid for by insurance, Frye and Jack are young, talented players still under rookie contracts, cash is always good and the Blazers have more 2nd round picks then they know what to do with. KP is gold with the #1's so I don't think that is going anywhere. $26.9MM out, $27.5MM in but you have more cap room at the end of 2009. Portland may even throw in a future #1 although not this year's pick.

Kidd is a short term rental but it helps for this year because more and more, teams are going to double and trap Roy. Kidd is also an unselfish veteran that has been to the Finals that can help this young Blazers team grow into their championship window. He wouldn't still be around for it although with a line-up next season of Oden, Aldridge, Webster, Roy and Kidd, I wouldn't bet against them. You'd still have a bench of Prz, Outlaw, Jones, Rudy and Sergio. (I know I'm leaving out Blake)

It helps from a multi-player deal which Portland needs to do either now or in the off-season and you still have Blake, McBob, Green, Freeland and a #1 pick to round out the roster with. If KP could get anywhere near something like that, I think it would be good in the short and long term

If we're involved in a three way deal, why don't we pry away Devin Harris from Dallas instead? I think he will be a better fit than Kidd. Harris is young, quick, good character guy, would fit well in our system. Just another idea.

if it's a 3-ream trade where Dallas dumps a guard, it's almost certain to be Jason Terry. Dallas will want to keep the younger guard of the 2

I've seen in several quotes that NJ wants some expiring contract relief. Portland can't really help with that...Dallas can with Diop and George.

And a team that wants some expiring contract, won't be accepting Miles.

and by the way, if NJ is insisting on dumping Collins as well...they're asking too much.

well that ends some speculation then and closes a door for Kidd.

Even though NJ wants to send him the the West, with Dallas out of the picture, Cleveland has to be a player. I wonder if Cleveland would be willing somehow to take on Miles if they get Kidd?...somehow portland sends lafrentz and Jack to NJ and Miles to Cleveland, and ends up with Collins(NJ), Snow, Marshal...and Daniel Gibson

Return to Portland Trail Blazers
