Good point, a good story will probably play a factor in this too. Not like Ellis didn't deserve it last year, but I thought Kevin Martin was robbed. Calderon might have the edge because of what has happened to TJ Ford, and the fact that he's leading us to a winning record.

If he doesnt get the Allstar nod, it would be nice to for Jose to get the MIP trophy.

He wont win it if TJ comes back, and the award has too many...candidates...Jose was a candidate last year as well.

Replace Chris Kaman for Tyson Chandler.

I dont think Chandler has improved at all, except for maybe one or two more alley-oops per game.

I wouldn't give it to a guy who is arguably one of the worst defenders in the NBA. Calderon makes Nash look like the defensive player of the year.

yeah i agree with the above poster. calderon's defence is a joke. too many people only recognize his offensive game. the other half is horrible
Jose "Hammy" Calderon - where Gatorade at the half clouding rational judgment happens, and where "hamstring" injuries linger all season long.

You want to know how bad it is? Forget the fact that he gets blown by with ease. Forget that he turns his back on his man, or the fact that he losses focus off the ball and lacks concentration. I will tell you 1 play tonight against Washington that will open your eyes on how bad Calderon's defense is.

The Raptors down by 1 in the 4th quarter (before Parker's last second 3), instead of playing straight up on Antonio Daniels, he completely gave Daniels the right side and forced him right into a short 5 foot shot from the baseline....basically a lay up.

End of story.

Defense is not a big factor in deciding who gets M.I.P.
If you look at the last 4 recipients, they're not known for their defense but stepping up there game overall compared to the previous season.

2006-07 - Monta Ellis, Golden State
2005-06 - Boris Diaw, Phoenix
2004-05 - Bobby Simmons, Los Angeles Clippers
2003-04 - Zach Randolph, Portland

You have no idea. Calderon makes all those guys look like the defensive player of the year. I suggest you pay closer attention to Calderon's defense on and off the ball. Just follow him for an entire game and don't look anywhere else on the court. Your conclusion will be that Calderon is the worst defender in the NBA. I gaurantee it.

Haha....worst defender in the league or not. I'd still have Calderon running the team rather than a pg like Earl Watson who's known for his defense.
I guess you can say Calderon's assists to turnover ratio, scoring and shooting compensate for his poor defense.

Oh well. If anything Toronto needs a bruiser like a PJ Brown or Kurt Thomas type.

I'm not really sure anymore. Calderon's defense is piss poor. If he can improve it to just poor, then I will take it.

Hollinger at ESPN named Jose as his MIP pick last year. He's in the minds of some, but not many. An all-star appearance would go a long way towards elevating his stature enough to get him legitimately added to the discussion this year.

Al Jefferson was putting up some big numbers already last year for Boston. That is why he became the centerpiece for the Twolves in the KG trade.

If Calderon doesn't get to the All-Star game, I will be disappointed. My clear favorite for MIP, and I would also like to see him in the Skills Challenge.

Jose has really improved this year and should be considered but the award goes to Kaman.
