The world entire soccer market is a haystack to the NBA's needle. Granted we're comparing apples and oranges, NBA is a league, and the world soccer market is made up of thousands of domestic and international leagues.
Great point. Soccer is a way of life, and the main source of entertainment for huge portions of the globe. Basketball, specifically the NBA, will never rival that, in terms of total numbers.

Nah bro, it is pretty bad there.
I went there a few years ago, and I recall seeing people on the streets without arms and legs begging for money. Little kids would come up to you trying to sell cheap merchandise, like combs for just single rupees.
And this was in a pretty decent area of Gujarat too, not even the slums.
I believe Mumbai has one of the worlds biggest slums, and I think Calcutta is one of the worlds poorest cities. Poverty is definitely a huge issue there.
My parents are from Gujurat and thats where most of my family that is overseas lives.
I don't know, really, though. I haven't been there in a while and my relatives are pretty rich.

I assume the original poster was referring to basketball as a whole rather than just the NBA.

"You must think I'm nuts," Stern says, "because we're also spending a fair amount of time scoping out India." Expanding to the world's second most populous market hardly seems loony. After all, no American sports league has exported its brand better than the NBA, which sells more than $750 million in merchandise overseas annually. Its games are broadcast in 215 countries. And India offers a growing, tech-savvy economy with a billion potential consumers
