Getting in on Kidd to Dallas

Post#1 » by karch34 » Thu Jan 31, 2008 4:25 pm

Last night they were talking about Dallas-NJ-Portland. The deal would be something like:

NJ Gets: Ager, Stackhouse, Diop, George, Jack, Frye, Outlaw, 1st round pick (Dallas)
Dallas Gets: Kidd, Armstrong
Portland gets: Devin Harris

They questioned why Portland would want Harris and also give up Outlaw. I was thinking if Portland backs out and NJ didn't want to get 6-7 players for 2, would the following be something we could get in on:

MN In: Bass/Ager and Diop
MN Out: Green/Madsen, Smith, and Boston 1st 2009.

Dallas in: Green/Madsen, Armstrong, Kidd
Dallas out: Bass/Ager, Diop, George, Harris, Hassell, Stackhouse, 1st rounder.

NJ in: Smith, George, Harris, Hassell, Stackhouse, Dallas 1st, Boston 1st 2009
NJ out: Armstong and Kidd.

I think the first deal is better for NJ, but I can't see why Portland does this move. For us it's really Boston's pick for Diop and his bird rights.

I like it. Maybe we could throw in Doleac's expiring to NJ to sweeten a little? btw, who is "they"?

Diop is an UFA next year, he wouldn't come back.

Sorry. They was Bill Walton, Steve Smith, and the other guy on ESPN's NBA half time show.

I thought Diop was a RFA. If he's unrestricted that would be tough. Of course either way we'd probably use the MLE or close to it to gethim/keep him.

Mark Cuban was asked about trading Harris for Kidd and he told them to step away from their crack dealers or something like that. So I doubt Kidd ends up in Dallas.

Saw the quote on the Bucks board. The url doesn't work tho. Maybe they typed it wrong. It is from sportingnews.com.

Knowing that, a deal that makes sense for two teams is Kidd to the Mavericks. To make the salaries match, the Mavs could offer Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Juwan Howard and Devean George. The latter three all have expiring contracts, which would clear about about $5 million off the Nets' books this summer, free them of paying Kidd $21-plus million next season and give them a pair of solid guards in Harris and Stackhouse. (Mark Cuban, however, doesn't see it this way. When I asked him via e-mail if the above proposal had any substance, he replied: "Step away from your crack dealer." I'm taking that as a no, he doesn't see that deal happening.)

The UFA hurts, we have no way of knowing if he would resign and we would be throwing the Boston pick out for nothing. I have no problems using the Boston pick to get someone, but not on a rental.

Take out the Boston pick, send Bass/Ager to NJ instead. I'd be willing to roll the dice on swapping Smith/Green for Diop in hopes that he'd resign with us.

Good idea by the way karch. I didnt really understand the Portland deal....why wouldnt NJ just want to get Harris instead of the other lesser prospects? This seems to make more sense.

How can we replace the package of Outlaw, Jack and Frye...That's a lot of value there and I doubt we have enough to get the Nets to bite, without stepping on our own feet.

Do you think any of Cookie, Green, Buckner, Walker, Doleac or Richard gets even in the vicinty of equaling Outlaw, Jack and Frye...IF you do I need some of that stuff you are smoking.

We wouldn't trade any of our core: Gomes, Telfair, McCants or Brewer to get a meh prospect in Diop...Yes he is exactly what we're looking for, but you don't deal those talented position players for a big tall guy with limited skills.

Also Nets prolly like Marcus Williams a lot. They don't need Harris, they need guys to replace VC and/or Jefferson, which Outlaw does. Jack is a great back-up, but Harris would get in the way of Marcus Williams starting. Frye and Kristic is a pretty good combo since they both can shoot the lights out.

I don't let myself think about Diop, since he's UFA.

But that makes me wonder .. why didn't DAL extend him? I know they're over the lux, but Cuban doesn't seem to have an issue with that.

He hasn't really developed into a guy who can get many more minutes than 20 minutes a game. In his 7th season you'd have thought he woulda gotten "it" by now. I doubt he has proved he deserves a long contract and now that Bass has been Dallas' Cookie he prolly is even less likely to get extended. All the being said, if he doesn't get dealt I would imagine Dallas signs him.

I agree with you. I think the reason the trade wouldn't get made is that Portland gives up all that talent for Harris? I like Devin Harris, but I'd never make that trade.

The UFA part does hurt the intent of the trade I proposed. But does anyone think he's going to get more than the MLE?

If we took out the pick then it's a good gamble because what we're giving up is not likely to be re-signed anyway, so it's a lateral move at worst. Now if we included the pick and moved a contract like Madsen's then we're actually clearing that longer contract and could use the savings towards offering an MLE type deal, which could also make it worthwhile.

Devin Harris is overrated and over hyped by the media, especially ESPN when they show Maverick highlights.

His best move is the flop. Yeah, he's fast and young, but what can he do better than any other PG in the NBA?

IMO, he'd be exposed if he were to be a #1 or #2 option on a team, he should be kissing Dirk, Howard and Terry for covering up his weak offensive game.

edit: just looked at his stats, and he is averaging 14.4 points on 48% shooting. He must be getting into the paint with his quickness, because there is no way he is taking jumpers on that kind of %. Thus concludes my argument on his weak offensive game, and yes, he is still lucky he has three scoring threats to give him a 1on1 oppurtunity to beat his man.

I disagree, I really hope this trade doesn't go down so we won't have to deal with Harris permanently. He is a very good defensive player with him staying in front of his man and getting many steals. He is the best athlete to ever go thru Madison. He is fast as anyone in the league and is very good at setting up the offense. The main thing I love about this kid is his ability to finish amongst the big man. He basically just propels his body into the guy which draws the foul and has enough hang time to finish the play on top of it.

Some people say you can't tell if a player is good by his highlights, but I disagree. This is a pretty dynamic player IMO.

What a horrendously stupid deal. Smith for Bass is, at best, a lateral move. That leaves a 1st for Diop, who isn't worth a first even without taking into consideration his free agency status. When doing so it makes me wonder if no one has learned from the Marcus Banks fiasco.
