My assesment of this team

Post#1 » by yuedar » Thu Jan 31, 2008 9:01 pm

I know im not a well known poster on here but I come on quite often to read the threads posted and enjoy the trade rumors and things that fly around here.
I feel alot of the posts are off base and I thought I would share my thoughts on what this team needs to do to change the direction they are going in.

1. coach philosphy
2. trades
3. roster changes

1. Ok I don't think Larry K is such a terrible coach. By no means is he great thou. I do however think he is a major part of the problem right now. I feel he is trying to turn this team into something its not. So that means we either go through major growing pains as this team grows to a new system or he will get fired and this team goes back to a mish mash of this and that.
I feel this team would be great at fast break and run n gun type play. Similar to warriors/suns.
All this half court this and that and we only have 1 real post player. Yi, CV,Gads, Ruffin, and Voskuul are not post players.(well ruffin & vos are meant to be but they SUCK!) Sure CV or Yi might show a glimpse here and there but they always go back to shoot first.
Larry K needs to change his philosphy or major roster moves need to be made now or this offseason.
Larry K also needs to get on redd about his shooting habits. Its a idiotic move to trade redd. No reason for it. we just need to get him under control taking crazy shots. I am not a packers fan but I feel the situation is very similar to Brett Favre with Holmgren getting on him about the way he would pass the ball and run all over the place. We need to do that with redd. WE NEED HIS OFFENSE

2. There should be no trades made for this team that do not include simmons or Gadz. Now depending on where this team wants to go either half court or fast paced.
If we want to go fast then I say keep Gadz But PLAY HIM! He would be a great backup to bogut in a run n gun system. Thou im not a fan of gadz its clear to see that would be a strength for him.
If we want to go half court then keep Simmons. He's a good backup SF for a half court team. I have read on here that he isn't happy being a backup so if he becomes a problem then trade him but try it first and see what happens.

3. Player personal I feel is really mishmashed and the roster does not make much sense. We have way to many useless big men on this roster. Ruffin, Voskuul, and Gads right now are all on this team and do nothing but give bogut, yi, and cv rest but really do not provide anything else currently.
Storey is another guy that helps us in no real way.
Mason I think is a bad signing since we seem to be siding more on a half court offense. Hes great for a run in gun team where he can get out run and dunk the ball. Half court is about setting up open shots and post offense. he is good for none of that.
Letting Erason go (I forget how to spell his name) was a stupid decision. I know he was only a 2nd rd pick but he was a really high 2nd pick and we should of kept him, played him, and passed on mason. The sooner we can bring him back (if ever) the better. Thou I wouldn't hold my breath on him ever being back. (yes I know we retain his rights back into the nba)
Sessions needs to be brought up and playing ALL backup minutes for mo. This season is lost give him real experience.

So with all that said what would I do to fix this?

I would turn this into a run n gun team. Our current roster favors it and I think our long term players would excel more in it. I would make sure the HC whomever it may be for the future be on redd about taking bad/crazy shots. Give this roster a direction that makes sense (run n gun style players) and make sure everyone on the roster has a clear roll so that we do not have duplicate style players. (voskuul+ruffin | mason+noel | CV+yi | mo+redd)

I AGREE. the fast paced offense not only would make us better, but is much more exciting to watch. i cant stand seeing this team score 70 points. LK may have helped our defense and rebounding but at the expense of our offense. this team right now is boring to watch and something needs to be done NOW.

Looks like Rosario from one of those train wrecks Kevin Smith did while shooting Clerks II.

I'm not a big fan of the run and gun style, it's entertaining and it's been proven to be successful for short stretches, but there has to be a point where this franchise learns how to defend someone.

well like it or not run and gun is what this team is geared for.

Ivey, Bell, Redd, Mo, Mason, Yi, CV, Noel, and Gadz are all better for a fast system.

Voskuul, Ruffin, Storey, and Simmons are better for a half court offense

Bogut and Sessions I'd say are kinda inbetween. Bogut can probably do both and sessions I don't know much about him besides great numbers in the D league.

So tell me which group of players would you rather have playing to max potential?

you can't have a fast system when the ball distribution/chemistry is as bad as a college team

True, the roster boasts decent speed even among the Bigs.
In fact, the Buck's recent success against San Antonio Spurs (that is before the last one) would indicate that they are better off outrunning and outgunning defensive teams. The question would be whether a running offense would lead to more turnovers given this young roster. TURNOVERS have been an achille's heel for the Bucks.

Another problem is that we don't have consistent penetration and kickout plays from the backcourt to play like the Jazz, Goldenstate, etc... There are too many spot-up shooters and a lack of movement, not to mention poor ball distribution.
The best scenario would be if Bucks were able to play both ways like the Spurs. I.e. use Bogut against soft interior teams and run against slow teams like the Rockets. It seems their intention may have been to play a hybrid of both styles but the team just appears so schizophrenic at this point. And didn't LK emphasize spacing, movement and ball distribution at the start of the season? Where is that emphasis now?

Fact remains that a good defense allows your team to better control games especially in the closing minutes. The most memorable wins have been when Bucks played scrappy defense and got more people involved on offense.

I think the turnovers are spawning more from a lack of movement a lack of imaginative offense and just a bad system that does not fit our roster more than anything. Todays NBA game is fast paced run n gun. our players could handle it I think. It can't be any worse than this half court stuff that we are doing right now.
