Official League Trade Deadline Thread: Pacers Don't Deal

Post#1 » by mizzoupacers » Fri Feb 1, 2008 4:27 pm

OK, it's now February. A month known for three significant days: (1) Groundhog Day, (2) Valentine's Day, (3) NBA trade deadline (Feb. 21 this year).

Err, make that one significant day.

So...will Larry, or won't he?

I say he won't, much as he would probably like to. I just don't think the Pacers have much that other teams would want, especially with JO out and Daniels gimping around.

Probably some teams would like to have Foster. Much as I and the front office like Jeff, I think he'd be traded if someone offers an expiring contract and a draft pick for him. Our payroll situation is dire...as things stand, we are looking at a payroll over $70 million next season, with ten returning salary commitments plus whatever we pay our first-rounder and three guys to round out the bench. Clearing Foster's salary could easily be the difference between being over or under the luxury tax threshold next year. I don't think he's going to be traded, but I do think he's the one guy there is at least a decent chance of being traded.

If anyone offers a draft pick--any draft pick--for Rush, then I think Larry has to think about it. The handwriting is on the wall that we are going to lose Rush after this year, there's simply no way to re-sign him without paying a dollar-for-dollar luxury tax penalty for it. Might as well try to get something for Rush while we can.

There might be a team or two willing to take a chance on Tinsley. Personally, I'd jump all over that, but the way I read the tea leaves, the front office isn't yet ready to ship him out just to be rid of him.

Who else? Mayyybe someone decides they don't mind taking on Dunleavy's salary. Mayyybe someone wants to see what Diogu can do. Harrison? No chance. Murphy? Really no chance.

I have to figure that Granger and probably Williams are not for sale, unless someone wants to pay a very high price for them.

That's what I got. Can't see the Pacers involved in a deadline deal. We're on our way to a 30-win season and zero financial flexibility next summer. Oh well, at least we didn't trade our draft pick this time.

I would say that we're limited by the proposition that we won't (I hope) make any deal that hurts us financially (and that we don't have anything that other teams are willing to help us financially in exchange for).

While it's still a strong possibility that we aren't willing to sacrifice talent to improve finances (fire sale on JO, others - the blow-it-up-and-start-over-scenario), I certainly hope that we won't make another deal that has similar financial ramifications to the GS deal. (And I'm OK with the GS deal, player & PR wise, just hate it financially.)

My guess is that with JO sidelined, we're sidelined on the trade market, too.
I have no idea what you're talking about, and clearly, neither do you.

Well, we'd better act some if we are going to do something...

Seems as though the Nets have swung a deal for Stromile Swift...

...and the Lakers have acquired Pau Gasol.

Gasol for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenden, and first-rounders in 2008 and 2010...wow.

I'll cry if that's all we get for JO. For Memphis, it's more of a salary dump than anything. Sheesh, an All-Star big man for a totally unproven rookie and two late-first-round picks (probably).

More likely than not that's the direction the Pacers are headed with O'Neal, though.

And we won't even do as well as Memphis did if he can't get healthy.

Lakers are looking scary if/when they get Bynum back. Fisher/Kobe/Odom/Gasol/Bynum, with a deep bench...that's a 55-60 win team.

That was crap for Gasol. Good trade for the Lakers. We sit where we were yesterday.

OT: Pau going to LA!!! WOW!!

Post#6 » by bballpacen » Fri Feb 1, 2008 8:29 pm

LA has pulled off one heck of a deal, landing Pau Gasol for Kwame, Critt, and 2 first round picks... Talk about a STEAL!!!

This should have great interest here in the heartland, as this could set the standard price of what JO could go for... If that was the best offer that Memphis could get... It is very scary to me what we would actually get for JO, and I would rather let him run out his contract than move him for a package like that. I mean Memphis already has 3 young pgs in Navarro, Conley, and Lowry... and two late, nearly second round draft picks...

Yep, I sure would hope we would get more than that for JO.

Memphis didn't get much talent back for a premier big man, but what they did accomplish is, they are going to have beaucoup cap room this summer. It will be interesting to see what they can do with it.

Merged b-ballpacen's thread about the Gasol trade into mizzou's general chat thread about the trade deadline.

Renamed the thread to reflect that this is an open chat thread about the trade deadline around the NBA.

Damn, lucky Lakers. First a small steal with Ariza, now a big one with Gasol.

I bet Larry was still offering them JO for Bynum and Odom

Lakers are looking real good right now. And they will look very scary when Andrew Bynum returns. Gotta give them props for making the deals. Their obviously more alert then our front office is.

I really want to add another first round pick though.

Now Memphis has 3 young PGs. Think they may move Lowry or Conley now? Can Gay and Granger co-exist? I would do Granger for Conley, as long as we can get rid of Tinsley and then have Shawne take over full-time for Granger.

I think Crittenton has a projection as a combo guard, so I think he could project out to play in a backcourt along with either Conley or Lowry and with Rudy Gay at SF as well.

Mike Miller's probably the guy they would like to move and they'd likely go with Conley, Lowry, Crittenton, and Gay at the 1-3 spots much the way we could go forward with Granger, Williams, and Diogu at the 3 and 4 spots.

I hope we can get more for JO, but IDK... JO and Gasol are about on par as far as value goes, and I think we may have missed out on this deal, especially if JO continues to be injured.

I mean, 2 1st-rdrs ARE STILL 1st-rd picks, and we really could've used a true backup PG in Critt. Kwame would've freed up enough cap to re-sign Rush and Danny, possibly Ike.

I'm not saying that we should've settled for this, but to be completely honest, it may be the best we could get for our oft-injured perennial all-star. I hope we passed on this b/c Larry has something better on the table right now.

That would be a dumb move on our part.

Granger is beginning to show flashes of a All-Star player. Once he perfects finishing when he takes it to the hole(which could be done easily over the off-season), Granger will be a great scorer and great defender. He has improved his ball handling greatly this year, his only problem is finishing when he gets the the hole, that can be taught and when he gets the hang of that, he will be an All-Star easily.

Thats not my only reason, my other one is, we are on pace to have a great pick in a draft full of good PG's. Why trade the player becoming the face of the franchise when we have a great opportunity to get a nice PG in this draft? Not to mention Tinsley really isn't playing that bad. Everyone was loving him before that Suns game. He has been playing well, obviously I'd love to have Conely, but to me Granger is becoming a great player.

Yeah, I thought we might be able to get a good PG in the draft this year, I was just thinking maybe we could get another strong piece in this draft. I would never want to trade Granger if we didn't have Shawne, but I think Shawne will be a star. Plus I like Conley and think he could be a star as well.

Tinsley has been playing well this year. But people have been saying to trade him for 3+ years, so when he goes on a slump fans are going to want to get rid of him again. He has worn out his welcome (did a few years ago, in my opinion).

I can see how you want to keep Granger, he could be one of the leagues best. I just don't think he'll be that much better than Shawne if at all, and I think for Shawne to flourish he needs to be SF, as does Shawne. But hey, I am just an opinion in which many Pacer's fans will disagree with.

We can't trade Danny yet, mainly b/c our defense will go from "extremely porous" to "completely non-existent" if he goes. Danny can be an all-star if he gets a chance and has been our best player this year.

But, if by any small, infinitesimal chance, we do trade Danny, we have to package Tinsley or Murphy with him. Danny's well-known around the L right now, and while he may never become a superstar and be the Man (I think he can and will), a lot of GMs know that he would be perfect as the Robin to someone's Batman. We can't just trade him, on his rookie deal, for a PG who has yet to show any real promise.

If we trade Danny, it has to be w/ one of our undesirable contracts, Murphy being first and then Jamaal being 2nd, probably. We can't just give away young, decent talent for younger, more unproven talent.

I think Keeping Dunleavy, and Granger is vital to our sucess. The only other person I would really like to keep is Foster and Rush. But if the right deal comes I say trade them. I think we could make some trades by pairing up tinsley and Ike. Maybe Shawne and Murphy. And I think daniels could be a trade away asset. I dont think this team is going to win enough as the small ball approach. I think we need defense. IF jo can work in a system that doesnt revolve around him. I say we keep him granger dunleavy. get a good pg and look for a solid young big. Keep the open ofense but really buckle down defensivly. Big men in mind are Swift Haywood Diop Dalembert. Pg would either have to come from memphis or the draft I think. By the way does anyone else miss brad miller?

We're going to try....but we probably arn't going to do anything. The players that we want to move...no one would want....and the players that other teams would want....we want to keep.

Unfortunately, any change that is going to happen will occur during the offseason.
