How the Gasol trade affects Kidd

We know that Thorn is holding out for some better value, well now that Gasol is on the Lakers for garbage, there might be a team looking even harder now at Kidd for contention, raising Kidd's value.

Somebody could also think they'd be able to steal Kidd from us in a similar way .

I hope Thorn's not allowing to get himself screwed like that .

I think Memphis is looking for a total rebuild once again. Even with the two low Lakers picks, they pushed themselves right to the bottom with that last trade and the most lottery balls come draft order time with their own picks. Swift for Collins will make them have an even better chance.

Thorn probably understands this, but the problem is that trading Kidd means two stars are still on this team. He needs to get rid of the older one to go the same route...something he, or if anyone were in his position, can't do right now.

Lakers may want to push even harder for Kidd, possibly even putting a star in there for him. OR...they could just say we'd like to test this out first. Let's see if we really need him.

I think what Thorn needs to do is be active, keep together the big 3 and build their bench better around them. Then see what happens to finish out the year and in the playoffs (hopefully!) and then trade during the offseason

i think it helps us cuz a lakers rival in the west (dallas, houston) will now feel more compelled to make something happen if the lakers take off like they should

Phil Jackson has stated Kidd doesn't possess a consistent enough jump shot to play in the triangle... You guys should have grabbed Bynum last year...

The worst thing about the Gasol trade is Idiots coming to this board and starting Treads with the cheapest possible Kidd Trade proposals .

umm i beleive we tried to grab bynum.. wanted to grab bynum... but the lakers shot that down

I truly believe Cuban will be pushing for a Kidd trade even more because he can't stand to see a team that has a better shot at winning it all than his.

The market for a 35 year old PG will always be weaker then the market for a 27 year old big man, regardless of how soft he is.

Do you think Thorn would move Kidd for a package surrounded around Odom+change?

As for the Memphis trade - it was purely finacial. They are doing what PORTLAND did. Create tons of cap space (for a potential big free agent signing) and rebuild through the DRAFT. This is the exact same way San Antonio has become so dominant.

You get two picks from the Lakers, a really nice prospect in Crittenton and the rights to the best player in Europe currently in Marc Gasol (which will be a trade chip more than anything for the future).

Uh let me put it this way, if the Nets trade Kidd why would they want Odom?

They have Jefferson at the 3, play Odom at the 4 you say? Well what happens to Sean Williams, Josh Boone, Nenad Krstic, and now Swift? There's already a crunch at the power forward position for the Nets.

Odom would have to be sent to a third team if the Lakers hope to land Kidd.

Well, I understand why they wouldn't want Odom the player.

In terms of REBUILDING, it would make some sense. Trading Kidd opens up the door for Marcus to develop. Odom is unselfish to a fault, so he would help develop some of the other younger guys as well by feeding them the rock constantly - he can also play the 3, 4 and 5 depending on the matchup. YOu'll probably lose more games - which means more lottery balls, which means a better shot at an elite player in the draft.

Expiring contract. Odom is cheaper than Kidd. His 14 million dollar contract will be easier to move than Kidd's monstrous 20 million dollar contract. You could also potentially package Odom's contract MUCH EASIER with Carter's to facilitate another, better trade that can get you some young guys/picks.

But yeah, it won't happen. At this point, I don't think the Lakers would be willing to give up Farmar in a Kidd trade either. But Odom is gone no matter what IMO. If not by the deadline this season, for sure by draft day.

It's just, I had a dream last night where the Lakers fielded a Kidd/Kobe/Gasol/Bynum powerhouse and I came.
