Indeed, with one of the richest men in the world as our owner we will have significant issues re-signing all our young players if we went after a max contract.
Wallace, eh? Hmm... I wonder if we could pry Webber away with another max contract. Shaq perhaps? I can't think of any other washed-up big men right off the top of my head.
VVV Do not believe the reports that our owner recently spent 30 million dollars to keep a player away from our team VVV
IF you were Portland

Of course if they actually go after a max player they will not be able to resign all trheir young talent in a couple years, so by all means Portland, go sign your Ben Wallace. It worked out so well for Chicago.
All I've heard from Portland fans is that they have an owner who is willing to spend spend spend.
Maybe thats not true, but you wouldn't think so with the way the fans sound.

Fernandez isn't even close to a potential all-star. He is the 3rd PG right now. I highly doubt he becomes better than a guy like Devin Harris, much less Paul, Williams, or Parker, who all are all-star contenders for the next 10 years at PG.
You're thinking of Sergio Rodriguez, Rudy Fernandez is the 'best young player in europe'* atm.

Even if he is willing, that is a humongous risk to take. If something goes wrong, you become the Knicks. A team with a handful of guys making a ton of money and are untradable. Portland can surely re-sign all those young guys and sign a free agent, but it is not a good idea from a salary cap standpoint. It leaves you no margin for error. Portland would be much better off not signing any free agents and just building through the draft and the additions of Rudy Fernandez and Oden.

The Knicks problem is that they gave money to crappy players.
I think they'll be fine if they don't use that cap space on a MAX player, but I don't think it would doom them.
