IIRC after Gary Payton's episode with Boston where something like this happened, the NBA instilled a rule that disallows a player to return to the team he was traded from in case he gets cut right after the trade.

According to Chicago Tribune columnist Sam Smith, Cleveland and Portland both had offers in with the Memphis Grizzlies in an effort to land 7-footer Pau Gasol, who was traded Friday to the Lakers.

According to Smith, the Lakers initially were offering Kwame Brown and Vladimir Radmanovic, the Cavaliers supposedly were offering Drew Gooden and Larry Hughes and the Trail Blazers were believed to be offering Raef LaFrentz and Travis Outlaw.

The Grizzlies were chasing expiring contracts, however, which posed the problem.

Smith also writes that Chicago, the team who has been linked with Gasol for over a year, were dangling Andres Nocioni and Tyrus Thomas, while the Grizzlies wanted Joakim Noah and Thabo Sefolosha.

While there was no official offer on the table, Smith writes that Memphis insiders believe that Chicago would have accepted the deal because none of their core were included, and the Bulls would have taken back a contract like that of Brian Cardinal.

Drew Gooden + Larry Hughes would have been temptin', i wonder why the bulls didn't want to give up noah and thabo.. i would have done that in a heart beat, especially after offering nocioni and thomas

On the deal itself, I cannot believe how little value MEM got back. Gasol didn't even demand a trade publicly, his numbers have dropped, but come on, this is ridiculous. He was still their franchise player. They didn't even get a productive player in return. Crit is a decent prospect, but for your franchise player? No way. The Kwame expiring is nice, but not nearly enough. MEM panicked bigtime.

On another note, Bulls fans must be absolutely PISSED!

There is nothing tempting about Gooden and Hughes. But I'm stunned, if true, that the Bulls wouldn't have given up Noah and Thabo along with whatever else. Egg on their face now. Now they're even more desperate... as are the Mavs and Cavs.

That report can't be right. There's no way Noc/Tyrus are worth less than Noah/Thabo. Perhaps they got it backwards?

I mean I understand that Memphis probably didn't want to add 2 more small forwards, but surely you can then flip Miller or Nocioni for something better than two very late first rounders.

Gasol would not have been enough to topple the Celtics and the Pistons. So, while acquiring him might have helped us break the 50-win barrier, it would not have been enough to win it all.

Next year, we will have $19,749,184.00 in expiring contracts (Rasho, Parker, Graham, Garbajosa). This is enough to swing 2 significant deals, if we want to spend the cash. Patience, my friends. Patience.

That is exactly what I am saying. We make a deal like this next season with Rasho's big expiring and we are set without having to touch our core. Besides, if we could have traded for Gasol, I would have gone for a threeway deal that would get us something from Chicago or Portland.

Wow, that caught me off guard. I didn't know we had that much in expirings. As it's been pointed out before, we're not gonna have enough money to sign a superstar if we re-sign our own guys this year, but we could very realistically acquire one through trade with those contracts. 19 million in expirings, throw in a decent prospect (Delfino) maybe a couple of future picks and that could land us a disgruntled primetime player.

Good points, guys. As anxious as I am to net that big-name player right now, I have to understand that Colangelo's plan to win a championship wasn't going to happen over the course of two seasons!
