Not so fast.

It makes your team a little better in the short term. But it costs you depth and (immediate) chemistry. Unless Minny or Isiah are involved, there's no such thing as a steal in the NBA.

As a Houston fan, I hope nothing but good things for your team.

But you better pray nobody gets hurt.

critt never played and gasol replaces all of kwame's minutes. there is zero depth lost.

While the deal was news to most basketball fans Lakers head coach Phil Jackson admitted this deal was a long time in the making.

"There's been discussion about this for about a year. Even though there's been a change in administration over there, and I've been asked about Pau (Gasol) over the course of the year, they started working on this awhile ago and a couple weeks ago seriously."

I can remember how Kobe talked with Pau last Summer in Barcelona and so did Kobe with Buss in Barcelona. Pau's statement after that was, we talked a bit about our situations. I wont tell any details.

Spanish webs are full of this theory now

How does it cost us depth when we replaced Kwame with Gasol and we weren't using Crittenton anyway? I think that's wishful thinking my friend!!!

slappy wrote:As a Grizzlies season ticket holder, congrats on getting Gasol. He may be a great fit for the Lakers, but he was not for the Grizzlies. The Griz had already become Rudy Gay's team and it was obvious it was time to go for Gasol. I've watched Pau for the last 6+ years as a season ticket holder and most of us feel his best years are behind him. He is not strong around the basket, offensively or defensively, is an indifferent rebounder at best, and is often indecisive, which leads to a lot of turnovers. That said, he was never meant to be a top banana, which he was forced to be in Memphis. I think he can really pay off for the Lakers if he stays motivated in his new role, but don't count on the Finals just yet. I am happy with the trade too, since it gives us a chance to acquire pieces to put around Rudy. Good Luck!

slappy, sorry you had to suffer through those years of Pau on the decline.

This post reminds me of what a Raider fan said about Randy Moss, right after he was traded to the Patriots.

It also reminds me of what a Spurs fan said about Dennis Rodman before he was traded from being ineffective with David Robinson to going to the Bulls.

I KNEW in my heart that even though the players lacked fire with their old team they'd INSTANTLY be GREAT with their new team.

Pau's best years start NOW, slappy. He's going to play with PASSION and he's got a HOF coach and Kobe who's trying to catch Micheal Jordan in terms of greatness.

Pau is REALLY YOUNG, STILL, slappy.

Gasol isn't like Garnett and playing alongside over-30 players who must pray they don't get injured or worn down through the playoffs. Pau is now a teammate of guys who are young and improving, with Kobe in his prime. Pau will improve is my bet.

I think Pau will be so much better than he's been in the past he might be a league MVP some day.

Honestly, I agree.

Just like Bynum has blown up as a big I could see Crittendon doing a Deron Williams' type blow up down the road. Not THAT large perhaps, but Crittendon's the real deal.

The complicating factor is Memphis has been a place where talent goes down fast. Terance Kinsey isn't even in the league and he's a great player who Memphis waived.

Kyle Lowry was a great rookie who got hurt very early. So they go and draft Conley, who's a natural PG. Conley will get his minutes but Lowry's going to be frozen out. That or Crittendon will be frozen out.

Another ENORMOUSLY TALENTED PLAYER for the Grizzlies is Bobby Jones. From Philly to Denver to now the Grizzlies he's not getting minutes.

Like Lowry, Jones is triple-double capable and a defensive impact player.

Memphis has A TON of talent but it's really a jacked up roster IMO because all the talent is young and they'll have to trade or lose a bunch when their deals run out.

magee wrote:Wow. Congrats to the NBA Champs. There's no way any team will beat y'all when Bynum gets to be 100%. Still a lot of kinks to work out once Pau comes, but shoot. This by far very, very lopsided.

Crittenton is pretty damn talented and will make a nice guard next to Conley. The picks will be relatively low, but those are the types that define role-players in the NBA. If they draft right, it could break even, but probably won't ever. Very nice.
Great post, magee.

Looking at what Memphis might have with Conley, Crittendon, Gay along with Lowry and Bobby Jones I see talent.

Let them draft a Micheal Beasley or Kevin Love along with a Thabeet or Roy Hibbert .... talent at PF and C to play being the dynamic duo of underachievement in Darko and Kwame ... and the talent is similar to Portland's team if not better.

It's going to be fun to see how the Grizzlies turn out.

Will they next try and move Cardinal's contract or Mike Miller or Darko's deal?

Jerry West has ties to both organizations...he was involved in this some how.

It's like he's the Godfather or the head of a crime family.

The logo sanctioned this or it wouldn't have gone done.

Him or the capo di tutti capi, David Stern, had to approve.

I think the prospect of LAL/Boston in the finals makes the NBA crazy dough. It's a great thing for the league to have a west coast power now that Boston's roster is stacked.

You have Durant v Roy/Oden in the NW. You've got Dwight Howard/Hedo in the SE and Chris Paul's Hornets had been leading the West standings.

But the old guard of Dallas, Phoenix, and SA are still there.

And I haven't even mentioned Lebron or Yao.

(And I say as a Wizard fan in three weeks Gilbert will be back and better than ever).

This Laker deal is making the NBA really, really, really huge.

Stern/West have done a great job, or Wallace/Kupchak or whoever got this done because it's a conspiracy of riches IMHO.

milesfides wrote:The Lakers are the best team in the league in terms of talent. It's not even close.

They have 3 players who are top 5 in their positions. Boston, San Antonio, and maybe Denver can boast that. The difference is, two of those three are frontcourt players, and our role players are better.

You know what happens when Kobe sets up the triangle on the strong side with Bynum, accompanied by Pau as the offside forward? Devastation.

This is the ideal triangle offense realized.

Most will agree with you, milesfides, that LAL has the most talent bar none. However, I think Portland is the best team in the league in terms of talent.

Kobe and Phil and Pau and the potential of Bynum make the Lakers are the team of RIGHT NOW. Portland's freaky talented to win 13 games in a row so young...

Roy, Aldridge, Frye, Pryzbilla, McRoberts, and Outlaw are tremendously talented. Blake, Jack, Rodrigues and if he played more Green; along with Roy are all great leaders who win. McRoberts is real talented and he hardly get minutes. They play as a team, too.

I LOVE the Lakers talent but IMHO Portland's might be better, especially if Oden returns healthy.

That has got to be the worst comment I've heard on this board in awhile. Who on Portland even comes close to the talent of Kobe? Oden is unproven and Bynum easily surpasses him at this point.

Lakers are better at every position, especially when it comes to the bench.

Back to reality, this trade is going to make the Lakers legitamate contenders even without Bynum and Ariza back in the lineup.

People are saying that Pau's numbers are going to drop, but I can actually see them getting better on certain nights when other Lakers aren't stepping it up.

Think about it, when Gasol was on the Griz, he was getting all the attention and he was still getting nearly 20/10 per game. Now he is going to be the second or third scoring option which means less pressure on him and greater chances for scoring/rebounding.

Go Lakers!

Who on any of the 30 other teams besides Lebron or Wade does come close to the talent of Kobe, zenmaster2323?

I think you're giving much more emphasis on players who've developed their skill sets over the years and confusing that with talent. The guys on Portland have talent but not experience, but you seem to be confusing the two, IMO.

I might tell you Micheal Beasley and OJ Mayo have more talent than say, Jordan Farmar, but judging by your logic like Oden they haven't proven anything because they havent played!

Last season when folks hated Kupchak and Kobe wanted Bynum traded, Bynum hadn't proven a thing either. Bynum fulfilled potential this season before he got hurt.

By talent I'm saying potential and I more than made my point.

Fine if you disagree, zenmaster, because I respect your right to disagree and call it the worst comment.

It just makes fun to surf in the internet and check out the articles about the Gasol Trade and which other teams wanted him.

check out this link and scroll down. start from below. We could have tradet for ben wallace (scary). the first offer was Kwame and Vlad (that would have been perfect) etc. enjoy
