Wilt Chamberlains 100 point game
I posted this on the Magic forum. Someone said to post it here as well.
I thought some of you might find this interesting. I was getting hammered with a friend last night and we started talking some basketball. He was telling me about how in Wilts 100 point game. Wilt was allowed to jump from the free throw line and dunk the ball on free throw attempts. He said no one ever talks about it when they talk about his 100 point game. I did'nt know if it was true so I did some research and found this blog. The guy who wrote it definetly has a problem with Wilt, but I thought some of you might get a kick out of ths so,
Here is a qoute from this blog
"Chamberlain 48 minutes 36 of 63 field goals, 28 of 32 free throws.(that season Chamberlain was allowed to leap from the free throw line and dunk free throws. The rule was changed the following season and he quickly became one of the worst free throwers in history)"

If I remember correctly, you could take a couple of steps and jump forward as long as you jumped from behind the free throw line. Wilt being so big and athletic was able to jump and either dunk or lay it in in most cases but most people can't jump that far.
This is just one of various rules that Wilt forced the NBA to change. Another famous one is lobying the ball over the backboard on an inbounds play under the basket. Nobody could reach as high as Wilt so it was an unguardable alley-oop.

the site is wrong - they changed that rule before Wilt came into the league because he was dunking FTs in high school.

copy and pasted my response from the Magic board below...
This guy is an idiot. I assure you, Wilt was NOT allowed to do this. He did it in practices joking around, but neither college, nor the NBA, would allow him to do it.
First off, this guy says they changed it the year after he scored the 100 point game. That was in March of 1962, Wilt's THIRD SEASON. So this guy is basically saying Wilt had 3 years where he could jump from the FT line and dunk it on his free throws, and that's why he went 28/32 that game. If that were the case, don't you think Wilt would've had a much higher FT percentage those first 3 years?
Wilt's first three years his FT percentages were .582, .504, .613. Yes, that year was Wilt's best FT percentage for a season, but the following season when the apposed rule change went into effect, he shot .593, so close to the same.
I've done tons of research on Wilt, as he is my favorite player of all-time. I believe him to the the GOAT. Now, obviously this makes me biased. But at least I make sense.
Also there is audio tape out there I believe of the game, don't you think the announcers would've mentioned Wilt was leaping from the FT line? He went to the line 32 times, don't you think they would've said "There goes Wilt, leaping on his FTs again" or ANYTHING?

Why? Is someone that is a world class athlete and 7'1 incapable of dunking from he free throw line?

In some ways, Wilt was almost unknowable. He was shy, secretive, and tended to compartmentalize the various and sundry aspects of his life. But I think that knowing and understanding Wilt Chamberlain -- or, at least, trying to -- is important. He's one of those rare figures that helped define, or redefine, the game of basketball. The NBA created the goaltending rule because of him. They widened the key in part because of Wilt's dominance under the basket. The rule that you can't cross the line on a freethrow until the ball hits the rim was instituted because the league was afraid Wilt would just try to dunk his foul shots (which he was fully capable of doing).

Well my friend said that he did do it, and I was'nt sure, so I looked for something about it and was able to find it. Like I said I don't know for sure, but the fact that I was able to find something to prove my friends word on this, lends credability to the charge for me. I will have to ask my friend agian, did he actually see this.
I just talked to him and he said that just by looking at his free throw % in that game that he was probally doing it in that game but there is no film on it and it had been known that he was doing it and they did change the rules after that season. The only way to know is to talk to someone who was at that game.

You found one guy, who is blatantly trashing Wilt in his "blog" and has no proof to back it up himself other than his own "word" that he saw him play. There's a poster on the general board, we'll see if he sees it and posts, but he's seen Wilt play and can testify to it.
Don't you think if Wilt HAD done this there'd be more talk about it? like i said, there's audio from the game in which the announcers make no comments about something like this going on. I've failed to see a single quote from someone who was at the game say he did this in a NBA game or a college game EVER.
From what I remember reading when I researched him a few years ago, was that he could do it, but the rules prohibited him from doing it before he got into the NBA.
Oh yea, and you said looking at his FT% for that game, but what about for the SEASON. If he could do it that game, he could do it EVERY game. They wouldn't allow him to do it just one night. It's not like that one night his brain clicked and he said "hey i'll dunk it from here this game" and than they changed it the next day.
I'm sure if we look hard enough we can find a game where Shaq shot like 90% from the FT line too.
And J-Rush, no one is saying he couldn't do it, but we're saying that he didn't do it in the NBA, and he didn't do it in the 100 point game.

I really don't know what happened. I just thought it was an interesting subject. This is the best article I could find on the game with quotes from people who were at the game including officials who never mention anyhthing about dunking free throws.

again, he did it in high school, they changed the rule everywhere because of this before he ever played in college.

If you look it up you can find old articles on ESPN and what not stating that Wilt could dunk from the free throw line, and did so in games.
There's also supposedly audio of the game out there, I'm not sure where you could obtain it though. It would be interesting to listen to the reactions of the announcers though.
