What should Sactown do?

Post#1 » by GIVE_WADE_THE_MAX » Sat Feb 2, 2008 9:53 pm

Sactown has talented players that are routinely mentioned in trade talks. I think Sac should make a Memphis type move to clear salary space. Petrie has doen a pretty good job trying to keep the team afloat since the Kings Championship window was closed. He's done a great job through the draft(Martin, Garcia) and found cheap talent that mixed in well(Moore,Salmons and Udrih).

Basically Bibby, Miller, and Artest don't really fit Sactowns long term future and at best they are the 10th seed in the west.

If they can trade Bibby, for expirings and picks, thats $14.5 mil off their salary figure next year leaving them at ~54 milllion(not sure how much Martin is set to make next year). Additionally I believe Artest has a player option for 8.5 million that I likely see him not taking(opt out). They could potentially be under the cap by $10-11 making them a player in free agency this summer.

I think a nucleus of Salmons, Garcia, and Martin is decent. The Kings could grab a key piece through free agency and build through the draft next year. Additionally Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas's combined salaries of 20 mil will come off the books in 2 seasons leaving their trading options open.

So what is the best decision for the Kings?

FYI, Artest stated that he will opt out...That's a given fact.

For me they should definitely be open in trading Artes,Bibby,Miller and Thomas but with the right type of package...

What memphis did was stupid coz yes they may have gotten 1st rd picks but they sure are in the upper 20's, they may have gotten a good young prospect but in a position where they certainly are crowded.

As long as they get a decent package then there's no question that they should go for it.

The Kings should follow the lakers lead. Trade Bibby to Cleveland for Drew Gooden + Ira + Shannon Brown, then buy out Drew and let him return to cleveland.

they should stay put and just play the kids...let Artest leave for nothing, the cap space will be better than anything you get in return unless you get picks.

Trading Artest should be #1 for them, maybe they could package Artest and Bibby for another big-time player, they're pretty close right now to being a very competitive team in the West

IMO, we should trade Artest by the deadline and ship Kenny Thomas with him. Mikki Moore and Mike Bibby expire next year, which will give us a nice amount of caproom in a huge FA market.

What would the Kings want back from a package of Artest and Thomas? If expirings then that would be a good move but then again they could just let Artest leave in the summer anyways. If its expirings and picks then its a homerun. I don't think you could work equal talent in an Artest trade. Teams know Sac is crippled in negotiating since Artest's desire to opt out is well known. Also Moore is on the books for 2 more years after this season.

Moore's contract is partially guaranteed in the 3rd year.
I think the Kings will take expiring for Artest+KT, but if it's not expiring it'll complicate the deal a lot, because the Kings would pay the tax of the incoming player, and in that case I beleive they'll choose to just let Artest go.

I kept looking for the green font in that lakers trade too...

Seriously, I don't think the Kings should do anything right now. They've been winning and they aren't that far out of the playoffs to throw in the towel just yet. See if they can shave a couple of games off of the 8 seed before the trading deadline.

The Kings screwed up. They should've moved Artest when they had a chance. Now his value has declined as other teams know the Kings are backed into a wall. If Artest leaves, they get nothing except capspace which they will still be over the cap so no help there. We could take back expirings in a S & T which I guess could help a little for next year. We still have Kenny Thomas. We are still at best case scenario an eight seed but more likely a 10 or 11. Dump the high priced vets for youth and draft picks. Miller, Artest, Bibby and try and get KT moved in one of the deals.

Sac has 2 options:

1. First thing right now is to do everything they can to get a good young prospect of a contending team for ron artest.. like prince/maxiell would be like the best thing for them just going to be the very difficult because contending teams like detroit will not want to give up good youth for a possible poison that could ruin chemistry.

2. Trade artest for the best player available such as marion or odom despite their contract and look to trade that player for youth, picks, etc as things start to change and teams are willing to give up their good youth for a shot at championship

If they dont... they lose artest for nothing when he opts out...

for any Sac town fan who thinks they will get anything but cap expirings in return for Artest and maybe a young player or two...just look at the Santana trade.

no one is giving anything good up for a rental player.

I would agree if it was in fact a rental, but in most situations where Ron would actually be traded, it absolutely will not be. I would be willing to bet good money on the notion that if Ron is traded to a contender (or even just a very good team), he will re-sign with that team.

As for what we should do....s**t, I don't know at this point.

They actually got pretty good prospects for Santana....and he wasn't a "rental" because they signed him to a new deal.

yea i can see the frustration with sac fans... ron artest staying will make them a good team, but he doesnt see it and wants to jump ship... if he ends up going to like denver it might not have been much better than staying with the kings as kevin martin gets better and bibby/miller healthy and playing well.. i can see sac being right there.. not in the elite of lakers (if gasol works out), suns (if marion stays or gets traded for good player), mavs, spurs... but there next to GSW, houston (of this year never know how good next year), denver, portland (unless they explode with oden playing well like they did this year only the next step), NO, utah, etc.
