Next Seasons Jamario Expectations

Post#1 » by thebossman » Sat Feb 2, 2008 9:10 pm

For the first time in his life Jamario will be doing what he loves and have a secure future while going into the offseason. He will have a full year of NBA experience under his belt and will nothave any financial concerns. He will know what he needs to work on to get better and will have some key drills highlighted by the coaching staff.

Prior to his first season in the D-league he didnt even know basic drills that were performed by high schoolers (according to his D league coach), I am sure many of the things done in practice in the NBA he has never done before either. With that being said, what are key areas you guys seeing improving?

I think he should improve:

- Dribbling - to attack the rim more like we all want him to do he needs to be able to break down his defender somewhat decently, working on dribbling will help him achieve this.

- mid range jumpshot - the 3 pointer isnt a concern with me because we got everyone else for that.

- Defence - hes a good defender but we need it to be "lock down time" from him all the time

EDIT:

What kind of improvement do you expect of Jamario, do you think he will be MUCH better next year, or is it more like "what you see is what you get"?

he needs to use his god damn athletecism and drive to the god damn hoop. No one on our team drives besides Bosh, and sometimes Bargnani. Moon should be putting people on posters, not chucking 3s.

A better jumpshot, it did wonders for Bruce Bowen.

Why does everyone think he can just put the ball on the floor and dunk it 100 times a game. He's in the process of adjusting to NBA defense. Yeah, he's 27 but he is still a rookie at the same time.

I hope he works on his handles a lot. Also I hope he begins to understand that just because he's open it doesn't mean it's a good shot. Teams want him to shoot and he does exactly what they want.

Driving to the hoop 82 games in a long NBA season wears on the body, I honestly dont think Jamario can do it right now with his conditioning. Obviously I dont know his actual conditioning but he has never played players this good, this strong, this talented EVER before. So going up against them everyday wears on you. I think often when he settles for the jumper he doesnt have that energy and SKILL to get by the guy.

He needs a summer to train both muscular development and to get some handles to actually create.

if he gets some handles he'll be able to go the net more.

Jamario Moon needs to either

A) Fix his shot (its ugly as hell)

or

B) Stop shooting long range jumpers (we dont need that from him)

^^^ easier said than done.

Its not very easy for a guy with no handles to get around a guy, especially since the NBA had to make that stupid rule: travelling

Probably. He's only actually created a dunk for himself a few times this season.

To be honest, rather than seeing more drives out of Moon, I'd like to see him move more off the ball, setting and using screens, cutting to the hoop, getting dunks that way. I like the idea of Moon closer to the bucket but I'm not sure I want my rangy 6'8" shot-blocking forward handling the ball that much. Focusing on the offensive glass would be nice too.

His defence should be better as he gets used to NBA play so that's no issue to me.

1) Top priority is definitely to improve the mid-range jumper. As of now, teams don't even bother to contest him at mid-range. Once he's got the jumper down to say, 45%, then his opportunities to go to the rim will totally open up.

2) Attacking-the-rim skills. I don't think Moon is the type of guy that shy away from attacking, I think he simply does not have the skill set right now to do that effectively. You would think that with hops and agression it wouldn't be hard, but I think it's difficult for him because he is new to the NBA and competitive organized basketball. He needs to learn how to protect the ball when going to the basket, how to use the power dribble effectively, etc. The kinda things that takes time.

3) General NBA experience. Moon still needs maturation in regards to his basketball IQ, and just the veteran slickness in general. He needs to stop going up so frequently on pump fakes, and he needs to improve his positional play. We can find a lot of good positional defenders who are better than athletic defenders in the league.

I'm with Rooster - less ball handling is key. And running him off more screens to free him more often in positions where he doesn't have to handle the ball as much would help a lot too.

My biggest complaint about Moon is his lackluster offensive rebounding. If he can improve in any one area this is the one that would likely help the team the most (as an improvement over his current skill set) and the one that would keep him on the floor. Moon has the hops to be an absolute beast on the O glass, so I'd like to see him realize that.

The midrange jumper mentioned above likely runs second to the OReb.

A small improvement overall would be nice of course, and should be expected too.

I expect him to impress at the dunk contest and be traded by season's end.

My expectation is that he will be coming in off the bench to provide some hustle and defense behind our newly acquired SF.

He needs to improve on movement. He needs to run off more screens and cut backdoor. He does it but he's floating too much and right now that mid-range float is only getting him a jump-shot which is not great. I don't mind him shooting the basketball, he's not shooting it that badly. I'd like to see him improve his jumpshot but he should work primairly towards moving.

Also some better ball handling skills would be nice.

But really when it all comes down to it I just want to see him work hard and play the same way he's playing now. Just keep it up and don't forget all of those bus leagues...because the second he forgets that he'll be right back there.

Ball Handling including passing sometimes when he drives he go to the D and then gets a TO when he trys to pass. This always gets him in Sam's dog house.

Mental D sometimes his mind is not as good as his body and he makes a dumb play. leaves his man that has already hit 5 3s or fouls the guy shooting 3 at the end of the game for example.

I like Moon and the path he took. He's humbled and will work for everything.

-mould him into a Bowen/Pippen defensive stopper
-involve him a bit more in the offense (alley-oops and some perimeter shots) so that he can keep opposing defenses honest
-anything else he can develop in the off-season will be bonus
