Luol Deng available? Hmmmm

Post#1 » by waverider » Sun Feb 3, 2008 9:29 pm

Was perusing the CHI board and TWO things jumped out at me - One is that they hate Ben Wallace and want him gone, 2nd is that Luol Deng's stock is way down from last year - plus they know he wants a large extension and so does Gordon AND their owner is NOT goin into Lux Tax territory. They gotta do something.

A bit of desperation in CHI. I am NOT al all crazy about Ben Wallace, but would you offer Lafrentz/Webs/Jack and/or Sergio for DENG/Wallace?

Yes definately, I can't see them doing that deal though.

A lineup of

Blake/Serg
Roy/Rudy
Deng/Outlaw/Jones
LMA/Big Ben/Frye
Oden/Pryzbilla

would be pretty sexy...

Nothing about Ben Wallace is sexy. I'd rather keep Raef and his good attitude instead of taking an extra year of salary for Wallace and have him possibly infect the chemistry of this team. Deng just simply isn't enough of an upgrade for us to make it worthwhile, especially with the steep improvement curve we're seeing from Martell.

Of note, if we prefer Gordon he could probably be substituted.

Put in Miles for LaFrentz, our pick unprotected next year, and I'm game. I would rather have Gordon than Deng though.

I think to get Dang, you might have to eat Wallace's deal. Its a high cost but Deng is clearly an upgrade defensively and rebounding.

Deng is the real deal. If we have to give away Raefs exp. contract for it, I would do it in a heartbeat. If we can add miles while giving an extra incentive (maybe a 2010 draft pick) then it's better for us. Still, I think Ben is a great backup, sort of another Joel.

except for being a lot older, a lot shorter, and having a lot more negative attitude, and being paid almost 3 times as much

If that's what it would take to get Deng.

Seriously guys, there is only one basketball. Our guys are not selfish but too many offensive weapons may be a bad thing. We already want Roy to shoot more and GO isn't even here yet..plus we got Rudy coming over next year. I think a pg upgrade and a maybe a backup PF are the only added parts. We have the stars..soon to be superstars, no need to bring any more Chiefs on board, we need more Indians.

I'd do pretty much any deal to get Deng or Gordon that doesn't involve our big three. I'd be delighted with Oden, L-Train, Deng, Roy, ? OR Oden, L-Train, ?, Gordon, Roy.

Of course, the less we could give up, the better. You don't win championships without a bench. But if the Bulls were seriously talking to us about one of those guys they'd have to propose something pretty stupid-ass for me to say no.

I'm generally in agreement here, and while I like Deng the guy just isn't all that and a bag of chips. He's a good young player that appears to have plateaued this season. He's a better than average defender, a better than average offensive rebounder, and a decent mid-range shooter. But to take on the boat anchor of Ben Wallace to get him? I just don't get it.

Actually I dont think we have enough offensive players.
Or more to the point, a offensive player. The Blazers
have a few guys that can get some points but no one
that really has a ton of offensive talent. I mean Roy
is the closest with the move set but his mentality is
not so. Now Rudy could be that guy but just because
he can put together a string of games where hes getting
23-34ppg overseas doesnt mean he can do that in the
NBA, but then again it doesnt mean he cant.. .hehe.. .

I believe the Blazers need atleast one true scorer in
order for them to build a team to go far in the playoffs.

I love Deng he would be perfect. He is the type of player we would look to pick up in our cap space plan, if we could pick him up early I would be all for it.

I dont like Deng for this team. He can't shoot threes to save his life. Our starting small forward needs to be able to spread the floor for Oden and Aldridge.

^^^ I disagree. Dengs developing nicely, a tough year like this is a good thing for us. I'f he wasn't struggling he would be way out of our price range. He's smart and he's a team player the "pace" in which he plays compliments Roy perfectly.

wow, Ben Wallace at the 4? Would there be a PF in the West who wouldn't get cancelled by him?

Ben can't move well enough any more to cancell out anyone night after night. Any PF that has enough of a shot to draw Ben away from the rim will simply be able to drive past him. In the West, that basically means everyone other than Nick Collison.

How about Raef, Travis, Martell, Jack and McRoberts for:

Ben Wallace, Deng AND Gordon? It sucks to lose those guys but....

PG: Roy
SG: Gordon
SF: Deng
PF: Aldridge
C: Oden
Bench: Joel, Ben Wallace, Rudy, Blake, Sergio, James Jones.

Hell throw in our pick and Sergio if we have to, what would we need them for?

Return to Portland Trail Blazers
