Unfortunately, I believe Ed when he says that he's not looking for cap space. I hope it's GM speak, but I've heard it a few times now (including in my interview with him), and it's beginning to sound real.

I would like to think that a lot of what we're hearing from Ed is just typical GM posturing - it doesn't make sense to tell other teams that you're more than willing to deal a player - that is exactly why the Grizzlies got 10 cents on the dollar for Pau - everyone knew he was on the block because of constant trade rumors since the beginning of the year.
I can definitely imagine Ed trying to put all of these statements out so that he is in a better bargaining position when teams actually come looking for Andre Miller. If you tell the league that you're willing to deal someone for expirings and picks - that's all you'll get (if that). If you tell them that he's a vital part of your team, they will have to pony up on their offer vs. trying to negotiate down from the expirings/pick package.
The other side of this is also Ed's realization that it's very difficult to land a legitimate post player/PF - and that it's very unlikely that he'd get a starting quality PF in the draft. As his most valued bargaining piece, Ed is hoping that he can parlay Andre Miller into a starting PF, knowing that it might be his only opportunity to land one.
That said, if the Hawks came up with an offer more like Ty Lue, Lorenzen Wright, Shelden Williams (PF prospect that has flashes, but is buried on their bench), and maybe a lottery protected #1 - I'm pretty certain that Ed would bite. Maybe that's hoping too much - but the reality is that Shelden has little value for them right now, and the last thing this Atlanta team needs is more youth that a draft pick provides.

isn't there a better trade for us along the same lines though?
how about: we get josh childress, picks, & cap space and we give up carney instead of hill.
i'd do that deal.
i don't understand what people object to with this.. don't most people who want to trade miller want expirings in return?
Edit: i agree with the post above as well.. didn't really read it before posting, but i'd go for that.

i agree that this trade prposal does nothing for us. We are in the cat birds seat this summer since no one else has cap space as a bargaining chip and Ed Stefanski appears to be a sly business man so i am sure he is more GM savvy than any of the well informed fans on this board
in the end, i trust that Ed will be like tom Cruise make "all the right moves"
however i just wanted to point out a quote from the article that gave me goosebumps but the not the good kind
"get it done BK"
bring back any memories any body?

Atlanta fan here, we have a similar discussion going on on our board. Obviously Atlanta has an incentive to make a trade like this because Dre' looks like "the missing link" to us becoming a really dangerous running team. The concern would be whether we want to resign Childress or not. The thought is that ownership knows that they probably have to resign Smith because he is a fan favorite and brings in revenue that way so losing the ticket sales could hurt more than the size of his contract. They also don't want to look like jackasses if Smith completely blows up for another team. If they also want to keep Chil, they probably don't want to bring in a contract the size of Miller's.
From a Philly perspective, what do you think Stefanski's motives are? Does he really want to make the playoffs? Does Dre's presence affect the development of the team positively? Does draft position matter?

I think Snider's gonna keep Miller either until this summer or next trade deadline. I think hes all but given up on trying to sign a top tier free agent this off-season. Instead he'll probably wind up doing a trade or a sign-n-trade with a team that has too much salary and/or has a disgruntled superstar. It may seem far fetched now, but maybe if the Suns dont win the championship and Amare gets frustrated we could broker a deal with the Suns next year. Or maybe D-Wade, Bosh, or some other youngish superstar who wants to switch teams. Thats probably who he hasnt traded Miller yet.

Our position is- Miller has a huge expiring contract next year.
If you have been paying attention- Memphis just gave away a borderline all star young PF/C- and they only wanted to deal with a team with a large expiring contract.
Same thing happened last year when we moved AI- we primarily wanted a big expiring (Smith '07, Miller '08)
If we keep Miller, at very least we have a player with a 10M expiring contrct next season. We may be in a position to steal a very good player just because every year there's a team that gives up on a high paid star because they want to start fresh and clear cap space.
Given we already have cap space for this summer, how much of an advantage is it to clear Miller's contract now?

it's funny that that's how the nba works..
it essentially comes down to:
miller is a valuable player right now and could provide a number of good teams with the piece that catapults them late into the playoffs (especially in the east, where everyone below orlando is mediocre at best). but if we were to trade him now there's no chance that we'd ever get a equitable deal in terms of talent received back (imagine how happy everyone would be if we were able to get a PF who offers as much to his team as miller does..) a player's game-related value means nothing to most teams when set next to their strategic, salary cap altering value..
i love this league.
