OT: Bobby Knight Resigns at Texas Tech

huh. Did they say why? It seems weird that he would quit in the middle of a season unless something went wrong (he abused some kid, he's in poor health, whatever).

His son is scheduled to take over the coaching when Knight steps down. I guess now is the time.

he claims he did this to help his son get off on the right foot and have 10 games with this team. it could be right. perhaps the university wants to see what his son can do before giving him the starting coaching position. I think that's a very small part of the story as to why he quit. Something that is very curious is that Bobby was not the one to speak to the media. Bobby is not the guy who had a press conference. that seemed very Un-Bobby like.

I believe the two main reasons he quit were his health and his quest for glory.

texas tech is currently 12-8 with 10 games left and maybe 1-2 big 12 tourney games to add to that. I' m quite sure bobby took at look at his schedule and saw 5-7 wins max out of the next 10. I have to believe texas tech will end up with 18 -19 wins and not be invited to the dance. many people in the know predicted bobby would retire after this year. if bobby retired after the season and his team did not receive an invite to the dance, the perception would be that he no longer has it and he was possibly forced out much like Gene Keady at Purdue. I doubt highly texas tech would fire Bobby and eat his contract if they don't make the dance. but the perception would still be there that the game has passed him by if he quit at the end of the season. this way, he goes out with a winning record, and texas tech still has an outside chance of making the dance. if texas tec h doesn't make the dance, it won't be Bobby's fault. if they do, then bobby's son probably gets the job as head coach

I believe the true reason is his health. I'm over 50 and know a lot about health and heart problems. Mowing our 2 acres with a push mower is no longer a smart option for me. A friend of mine spent a week at the hospital with a 95% and 45% blockage. he thought he just had heartburn. I had another friend who died of a massive heart attack walking down his hallway. he was 45. A member of our church died yesterday just shoveling his walk. We only had about 4-6 inches. he was 48. Bobby is older than me. I have to believe he has regular medical check-ups. I have to believe his doctor and wife gave him an ultimatum- quit coaching and live, or keep coaching and die next month.

I think Isaih thomas said it best when he said he would call coach to find out the real story before he would make any further comments.

I doubt very highly that Bobby was forced to resign based on any incident involving a student or current player.

but in looking at some of those recent shots of Knight, he's looking OLD. real OLD. You can see the energy is gone. Bobby is a physical type of guy. and he doesn't look like he's physically able anymore. like his son said, he's tired. tired of playing the game.

i have to believe Joe Grand Pa Terno and Bobby Bowden will follow suit next year. they also already have their successors in place.

maybe bobby is doing a bill cowher. he's retiring now to get out of his contract with texas Tech. and he'll resurface at I U next year. IU's Sampson has a clause in his contract that states he'll be fired if he has any major NCAA infractions. And we all know it will only be a matter of weeks before the NCAA finds Sampson's latest infractions.

or how about this new frontier ? Bobby Knight will be replacing Dickie V as the new basketball media announcer. dickie has to pass the torch to somebody soon. There's nobody better in Dickie V's mind than the GENERAL ROBERT E LEE KNIGHT! I can just see Bobby pulling out his bill whip and saying get me some PT baby! or how about Bobby being the media guy and asking the stupid questions? the TV ratings would go off the scale. and as a sequel, belechek could join him and do color for Sunday night football games. have belecheck replace Madden or kornheiser.

I heard a rumor bobby is one of the 164 finalists on American idol. he beat out Ben Rothesburger for the final spot.

Knight won't be back at IU. While he is more popular here than he is unpopular, even many of his supporters would prefer not experiencing the turmoil he brings, especially when so many are not supportive of him.

I always liked Bobby a lot.

They interviewed Coach K on the Tirico show this afternoon, and I found the choice of words in the interview to be kind of interesting. Coach K had said that he talked with Knight's wife and then Bobby for a half hour last night.

From what Coach K said, Knight stepping down was for two reasons:

1 - He wanted to give Pat a chance to get his feet wet
2 - Knight was finding it hard to get up for games in that environment. Very little excitement, few big games, half-empty arenas. Coach K that he himself would go through spells where he didn't feel like he could coach that day or that he was worn out a bit. But he said that being at Duke or Indiana you had that constant excitement and rush to bring you back, but down there where Knight was at you didn't and that's what Bobby was frustrated with.

I think the general idea out there is that Knight is done with coaching. That seems to be the prevailing theme on ESPN. I think Coach K knows otherwise. He said something along the lines of, "He woke up one day and realized he didn't want to coach down there". I just thought that an odd choice words unless he knew that Knight plans to resurface elsewhere someday soon.

And point 2 is so unlike Knight's preaching to players that you play against yourself (to meet your potential and not against the opponent or other situational variables). Seems very hypocritical to this long-time Knight watcher. Whatever, he will not resurface at IU. That bridge was burned down long ago. And it won't be at OSU where Motta is doing very well.
