Hollinger Chat: 3pm ET on 2/5/08

Hollinger answered one of my questions in his chat today:

Bango (Brew City, WI): Do you see the struggling Bucks making a major move before the trade deadline to shake things up? Or will they start jockeying for draft position and begin their search for a new GM?

SportsNation John Hollinger: (4:00 PM ET ) The answer to your question really depends on how Sen. Kohl feels about Larry Harris -- something we've heard conflicting reports about. If they want him to continue, then they need to give him a free hand to reshape the roster -- and at this point, trading Redd needs to be one of the options on the table. If not, they should get their new GM now and get on with it.

Some interesting tid-bits... The way the year has gone thus far, I thought it was a foregone conclusion that Larry H would be gone. But Hollinger makes it sound like he has heard otherwise. He eludes to the fact that our GM has not been given free reign to reshape the roster as he sees fit and needs that power for us to be successful. And have we really degraded to the point where our best player (Redd) doesn't fit in with what we are trying to do and needs to be traded?

this smells of Hollinger not really knowing what is going on and throwing the idea out there that LH could be renewed. There is no way he will be and it seems that LK is falling out of favor as well.

As others have said, I think it's the Michael/Mo guard combo that doesn't work. Trade either one IF it makes the team both stronger and better balanced. Or... add a starter or near starter quality PG is has size, defense, court vision and leadership. With the second option, we'd still need a capable 3 or 4 - and that may be tricky to pull off.

if they add that type of PG, do you expect the bucks to move Mo or have him be a sixth man type?

You should have asked him what his PER was on the Bucks making a move, I'm sure he has a formula on it.

Since were talking about ESPN analysts who provide nothing more than re-told rumors...where has Ric Bucher been? He is the one guy that I absolutly could not stand at ESPN...it's been refreshing not seeing him for a while.

I like Mo and like having his "heart" on the team. If he gets 22-25-28 minutes at the 2 and the 1, I think he might be worth his contract. But if you have to pay Mo-type figures for my 3rd guard, that would make it problematic.

I don't worry about The Senator's money like some do here. You can start out hoping that every contract is going to be a bargain, but it ain't gonna happen. And that doesn't mean things are seriously out of whack. It just means it's the NBA...

Don't be so sure about Harris' fate being sealed.

Kohl is somewhat schizophrenic and prone to changing his mind, often as a direct result of listening to far too many voices about basketball operations, with many of those voices not being voices one should listen to about basketball operations in the first place.

Kohl has completely reversed course on a number of stances he was previously "locked into"

Giving Porter another season, giving Stotts another season (the season we are in right now), and green lighting Harris to look at trades which involved Villanueva. Those are just three examples of things that Kohl was set in stone on and changed his mind.

Not trying to devalue the info you're hinting at. From what I understand you have good info on this. Just trying to remind people of Kohl and his sometimes doing things on a whim that are reversing course.

Certainly, with Kohl, there's always skepticism that needs to be taken into account. I truly wonder if LH would want to re-up his deal if given the opportunity.
