I'm surprised Jermaine O'neal talks never resurfaced between LA and Indiana, especially with how well the Pacers were playing without Jermaine. I think he would be a better fit for the Lakers than Pau. But we'll have to wait and see.

Lakers got a steal of a deal here.

It would seem that this would take the Lakers out of the running for Kidd now though.

I like the expiring contract for the Grizz, but outside of that, they really didn't get a great deal. It's ok, but far from what they were hoping to get out of him.

The Memphis forum is really mad. They really hate the trade, which is understandable.

Grizzlies without a doubt get hosed big time in this trade. However, Grizzlies got more for Paul Gasol than Blazers got for Zach. Salary cap space in 2009 is a component of both teams trade. Blazers will only have a 1-year window of cap space and should be in a better negotiating position to get a FA with that cap space. Grizzlies might not get a player in 2009 but they could also have cap space in 2010. Plus, Grizzlies received cash instead of paying out $28 million.

Maybe the deal makes some sense for Grizzlies since Pau Gasol was obviously not going to help Grizzlies have a winning season. I think Gasol is going to be great for the Lakers because he is a very skilled player that can do many good things in the team framework that will help the Lakers be a better team. He will play PF and Odom will slide over to SF or Lakers can play Odom and Gasol as their bigs while Bynum is out of the lineup. Grizzlies will save a ton of money not having to pay Gasol his max contract and will win just as many games without him.

I don't like the fact that the Lakers have more talent now, but I love the fact that it's even easier now for me to hate Pout Gasshole.

As far as the randolph trade vs the Gasol trade today, Gasol is simply a better player. While he isn't the best defender, he's a 50 %+ player on FG% and provides post offense for the lakers. Randolph is non-existant on defense and his FG% have been gastly for most of his career (for a big man) so I honestly think the Blazers got a fair return for Zach with a shorter deal and a decent role player in Frye. Memphis, on the other hand, got even more PG's but did manage to get an expiring contract. Considering the situations for both teams, the Randolph trade wins out because Francis's contract expires the same year as Lafrentz in a decent free agency year and Memphis got capspace but no value with Kwame's expiring (or at least very raw talent). I definitely see why Chris Wallace made this deal but honestly think Pau Gasol could have yielded more than just an expiring and very unproven talent (which is about what Randolph was traded for last season in terms of value).

We need to trade them Jack and LaFrentz for Mike Miller, right now.

Does anyone remember Chris Wallace interviewed for the Blazers GM job before Nash was hired? As I recall, Wallace supposedly would've got the job but he was unhappy with the limited control the GM had in the Blazers organization. Wallace said the GM job the Blazers were offering was a glorified assistant GM.

One thing about this trade to keep in mind: there's little doubt that a team found Kwame Brown's expiring contract attractive. Now this summer, Raef's 12.8 million expiring may be a little too big to move, but the following summer and 1st half of the season, if Miles is still a blazer, his 9 million expiring contract might actually give portland some interesting leverage.

I hope so, because this Blazers team is needing
a scorer & it would be great if one could be had
by the above means somehow. I just dont like
other teams around the Blazers getting better
thru trades while the team stays the same
when its clear there needs to be trades to
be made. The roster needs a little thinning
and there are holes to be filled. I know Oden
should help a ton in the defensive & rebounding
area, but that still leaves a scorer and im not sure
its wise to put all the chips on Rudy to do that.. .
imo

Miles could be a trade commodity before or after the free agency signings in summer 2009 are over. Miles could be traded in February 2010 plus $3 million as an almost free player in exchange for a veteran some team wants off the books. Notice Aaron McKie was a part of this trade and he has played less than Miles the last 2 seasons.

Yeah, I can't fathom why they'd trade Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol. Makes no sense.

apparently, you don't understand the defintion of "all"

I fully understand converting assets like Kwame Brown's expiring contract, crittenton, marc gasol, and 2 first round picks into an asset like Pau Gasol. Time will tell how much it was that LA actually traded away over and above brown.

What I'm not sure of is Pau Gasol's ability to play PF. He may be able to, but that's not certain. And if he can't then the Lakers have Bynum and Gasol jammed up at C. I would assume they see bynum as the starter, so Gasol would be a backup C making over 15 million a year. That's a lot of money for a backup.

Gasol is relatively mobile for a C, but he's not for a PF at all. So Bynum and Gasol as a 'twin towers', while certainly tall, wouldn't be that fast.

The new version of 'showtime' will run at half-speed

Wow.. Im convinced you have seen very little of Pau Gasol over the years... He has played PF (and played it effectively) every single year since he's been in the league (except last year when he missed most of the season) He was paired with Lorenzen Wright his first 5 years, and Memphis even brought in Darko so that Pau could go back to PF this year... No question Pau is a natural PF

Also, why wouldnt Pau and Bynum work? Again, if you have ever seen Pau play, you would know he likes to play facing the basket from the short corner or the free throw line extended... Most of his points in the paint come from driving, offensive rebounds and slashing to the basket... I dont know why you would think they would clog the paint....

Finally, why would you think we were trying to re-create showtime?? We dont even have a Star PG.... that doesnt even make sense...

Mitch Kupchak has actually stated that Bynum is slightly ahead of schedule

Because the 21 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks on 54% he averaged last season and the 19, 9 and 1.5 on 50% he was averaging this year are so far under his career averages...
