Can we at least swap picks with Mia?

Seriously, i wouldn't feel as bad if we sent our (ATL) pick to them and they sent Shaq and their 08 pick..

It just doesn't make sense.. The level of talent is beyond uneven!

I would like to get there pick, but I do not think they can trade it after trading last year. However, I am not sure on that tho, but it would be nice to get their pick.

^We've traded picks in consecutive years before.

I think the Mavs have done so too..

Both teams traded for players no longer favorable on either team, so i don't know if picks are necessary.

You guys also gotta realize that 2 years/$20 mil is saving you money in the long term...Marion is going to want a max deal because he's only 29 right now.

Oh and i forgot to mention that our pick already belongs to Minnesota, except with protections for the next 2 or 3 seasons. And we don't have any second rounders this year either; not that you would really want those anyway i'm guessing.

The back to back year thing applies only to future picks. At this point in the season, any team can trade their pick for 2008. The 2008 pick is no longer in the back to back equation.

Also, a team doesn't need to retain their first rounder, as long as they hold a first round (another teams first rounder for example) is just as good.

So Swaping Picks is always an option.

What teams can't do is trade away all their 2009 and 2010 first round picks, cause that falls under the back to back years rule. You can trade 2008, 2009, 2011 in a package. I think the other rule is you can only go 5 years out so that usually limits it to 3 picks via trade, unless a team has extra picks stockpiled.

That being said - Miami's got a shot at a #1 pick. That's not something that teams readily trade.
Go Knicks!! Go Mets!!

As for the Jets . . . just keep it entertaining.

Actually Miami DIDN'T trade their pick last year, so they CAN trade or swap their pick this year BEFORE they make the pick this year. The reasoning behind this is, yes they made a draft day trade, however they drafted a player then traded him, therefore it doesn't account for a traded draft pick.

Teams can't trade a draft pick in consecutive drafts. However if they make a pick, then trade the player, doesn't count as trading a draft pick.

Example:
Suns pick Rudy Fernandez then trade him to Portland for $3mil cash in 2007.
Suns trade 2008 1st round pick to Seattle.
So, the Suns cannot trade a 2009 1st round pick.
If they pick a player in 2009, they can then trade the player to any team they chose.

I thought we traded both 2008 and 2010 first rounders to Seattle?

If that was the case, does that mean we can't trade 2009 and 2011? Only the 2012 pick? (Or the 08 Atlanta pick?)

Correct. Now if we pick a draft a player with our pick in 2009 or 2001 then turn around and trade him we're legal. But we can't trade either of those picks, say with players now for other players or picks.

What if we acquire another team's first rounder in 09 or '11, we can't keep that in lieu of our own pick? It HAS to be the Suns pick for that year that we keep?

It's a moot point. No way they include that pick in this deal. It is the only bright spot at the end of a tough season for them. It's enough that we get rid of Banks. That was probably the clincher for Kerr.

Then we would be able to trade OUR pick in those years. If we get a 1st round pick from another team, the Pick belongs to us. So if we have more than one pick in those years, then we can trade picks before we pick a player, as long as we make a pick with one of the picks.

If we don't get to swap picks, we got royally screwed.

Bottom line is that you can't trade your own pick in consecutive years. On draft day you can take somebody and ship him off to another team.

Again anybody that thought we could get that pick from Miami is dreaming. Think about it from a Heat fan's perspective. They would be furious.

So how does that mean we can't swap picks with them? Miami took a player last year and then shipped him off. The Suns took Fernandez then shipped him off to Portland. We can trade the Atlanta pick for Miami's pick without restrictions. I dont care how Miami fans would feel. They're getting the better of the deal financially, plus they already feel ecstatic about this deal for them.
