mavs championship window: going, going, gone?
do the mavs still have a realistic shot of winning a championship?
with the recent moves from the lakers and suns, it appears that the mavs are no longer legit title contenders. the spurs are still going strong, the lakers just created an intimidating froncourt with no one except fisher over 30, the suns just transformed themselves into a team with muscle in the middle, the warriors haven't going anywhere, the jazz are hitting their stride, etc.
are the mavs still title contenders as is?
is there anything the mavs can do to get back into the mix?

Unless the mavs pull off the Kidd deal, i think they have no shot at even making it to the WCF with LA getting tons better, PHX trying to re-motivate the diesel, and SA being SA. It sounds nuts saying that, but realistically the writings on the wall.

I think it's been open just a bit since a year ago or so...
Dirk doesn't work as the #1 option. Not so much because of choking (which is way overblown), but because of how he's defended. That's been the main factor to Dallas' failures. Dirk's proven he's a clutch player over the years.
But when he does get contained by the defense (which has happened quite a bit), and isn't scoring well, his impact on the game drops off, and the drop off to the rest of the team is too much. As Dirk goes, Dallas goes.
They need another top-level scorer, that will close that gap. Specifically, lacking an impactful interior offensive presence has hurt them.
Regardless, Dallas is still a very good, deep team that will typically go deep in the playoffs.

How about your last 2 post-seasons? Was that you "cruising" too?ss_maverick wrote:Why wouldn't we be contenders? We're the same team that beat SA 2 years ago except Harris and Howard have improved and we've upgraded the bench.
Don't be fooled by our regular season, we is just cruising
If you couldn't win it either of the past 2 seasons when you arguably had the most talented team in the league why should I think this year will be any different? Dallas doesn't have the leadership or testicular fortitude to get it done. Until Dirk grows a pair and gets himself in the post and keeps himself there the Mavs aren't winning a damn thing.
I won't say their window is closed because they still have the assets to make a move that could help them, but I don't like their current rosters chances of coming out of the West. They are the very definition of pretender, although they'll tease you just enough to think *maybe* this is the year. But nope. It's not.

That's not the reality or something of legitimacy though. The Knicks organization, obviously don't value Curry that lowly, or even a bit more than that.
Curry would command Howard (attempted, and failed) or Harris, plus the R1 pick.

Dirk/Damp is as good as those, it's the backcourt that has me worrying. IMO Dallas needs a PG and a SG because Terry and Harris are really neither unless the other's a strong ballhandler. Kidd or Miller would be good for that team.
The last two years were the Mavs' peak and they blew it, plain and simple. A Finals run and then a 67-win season... wow. Way to go, boys.

Thing is, that's just not his game, didn't/couldn't develop it. He doesn't have the level of ability and consistency to make an impact there.
He worked on it this summer, but hasn't had much results. Also still has been limited by the defense this season.

I'm not disputing any particular point. But that's why I don't believe in them. You aren't going to win when your best player is a 7 footer who plays so much like a SF that a SF can actually disrupt his game.Ballings7 wrote:-= original quote snipped =-
