what about getting back on defense when you are playing a running game?

Shaq puts in 0 effort defensively most of the time, and even when he does he just ends up fouling. Add that to Amare not knowing what defense is and you end up with a defensive frontcourt to rival Curry-Randolf

You don't need all 5 guys to run, but losing Marion means they can't spread the floor as effectively, AND the Suns just lost their best finisher on the fast break.

Also, playing in a halfcourt offense means putting a barrier on Nash in terms of offense. Nash is a great player, but he's only been so great in the Suns run and gun system that they play 95% of the time. Adding Shaq requires Nash to slow down, and that bodes well for whoever is trying to defend Phoenix.

on paper this looks good for the suns. in reality, i'm thinking a curry/randolph lineup.

If this deal goes through, Ill be wondering that Steve Kerr is thinking. This trade can be a Hit or very very big miss. They better be getting Draft picks cause miami is gonna be getting a good pick.

I honeslty cant see him getting any more than 15ppg now, and thats if he's passed to with great regularity which is highly unlikely with STAT on the team. So for a team based on high octane scoring, where are those extra points going to come from? Where is the equivalent of Marion's defense going to come from?

firstly, shaq averages 14.2 and marion 15.8, so your BS info about 19ppg for marion is just rubbish

secondly, factor in this - marion plays 9 minutes more per game, so when working out the point breakdown, add in the contributions of diaw who will play 8more minutes per game due to this trade

also factor in the extra minutes and aggression amare can play with now that he isnt as concerned about foul trouble and you can see where those extra points will come from

as for marions defense, my only answer is to hope that shaq can draw more fouls on the opposition bigs than marion did (marion never did) and that in itself could hopefully have an effect

Funny that those people who 10 pages back kept harping on how this is a good deal for the Suns still continue to ignore that Shaq is not capable of playing consistent defense anymore, and that any O he gives them is automatically negated by his mediocre, foul-prone D, and that is exactly what the Suns don't need. Shaq also doesn't get the benefit of the doubt on calls anymore on that side of the ball. All in all, this is a defensive downgrade position to position (Amare is mobile enough and has enough endurance to at least guard the pick and roll, while Shaq does not), and they lose their best man defender in Marion.

Honestly, I think the Suns got worse not just defensively, but a little bit offensively. To change their style of play to dump it into Shaq ball without having had any sort of successful half-court motion offense run before is a drastic move in mid-season. If it were a summer deal that would be different, you have a training camp. This is a stark change, and they lose their best cutter and off-the-ball player in Marion.

hey what about the fact that shaq's bones are breaking from all the fat he has to carry around. how do you plan to build chemistry this offseason when he has at least 20 more games of vacation penciled in (don't worry, he'll be just fine for the physical). and yes, you only have a 1 yr window.

you do know shaq can't get up of the ground and only plays half the year even if that. Suns rebounding will take a hit too because most of the nights he won't be there. This is a bad trade no matter how you try to spin it.

Great point. People will foul Phoenix more now since Shaq is an obvious weak link at FT shooting (and the Suns typically never have a FT shooting liability on the court), and Shaq averaging 4 fouls per game (in only 28 minutes) won't do anything but slow the game down into one of less possessions. Slowed play = less fast break points. Can Phoenix really transform their offense within 3 months and remain successful?

What the hell are the Suns doing here..You can't be a running team with Shaq, and more importantly the Suns lose the guy who can guard anyone. A mediocre defensive team got worse, and their perimeter defense in particular is significantly worse.

The only way the Suns will come out looking good is if they win a championship this year.

The Heat meanwhile are on the fast track to reloading, add Beasley, Rose, Mayo or Love to Wade and Marion and you've got something there.

Great trade for Miami, a wait and see type of deal for Phoenix.

I'm not trying to say Kurt Thomas is as good as Shaq but he did alot of important things for them, he guarded the post well, rebounded and hit the mid range shot what exactly is Shaq going to do better that Amare doesn't do, and Thomas did? maybe better passing, but at the expense of Shawn Marion??

Why didn't they just try and get Gasol, I know i'm all over the place here but this trade from a Suns standpoint is puzzling, unless of course they end up winning a title.
aol4532 on bill russell
I think if you put McGee back then, he would get those blocks just as easily as Russell did. Russell's athleticism was well ahead of the players of his time, and that's about it.

don't get ahead of yourself. who says phx cant play well in a half court set? nash can run the league's most effective half court offense.

But this acquisition, assuming Shaq plays a lot of minutes, will make Phoenix be more of a grind it out/halfcourt team. Getting Shaq and losing Marion makes them a very weak team defensively, and if you want to prosper in a halfcourt setting then you have to have a good defense.

And if Shaq doesn't play a lot of minutes (or is out for extended periods of time with injuries) then the Suns only got worse by losing Marion.

The only way I see this working is Shaq simply feeding off of the attention that Amare will draw. It'll be interesting to see if Phoenix can pull this off. Right now I won't believe it til I see it, but if Phoenix can make it work then they'll be dangerous.

The difference is the salary implications.

If Golden State traded for $60 million worth of Chris Webber, my head would explode.

Not to mention, Phoenix also lost their best perimeter defender, so it's a net loss IMO.

false, if you want to be a good running team you need to make your opponent take hard shots and miss. half court teams can send ppl to the free throw line, which fast paced teams can't.
