I'm with the guys who can't understand how in the world there are some people here trying to make this look like it makes sense for Phoenix.
Excuse me, but aren't we talking about the 35 years old Shaq here? The fould prone due to his slow moving, 48% FT shooter, under 8rpg in 28mpg Shaq? The guy who's declining as fast as a rock trying to swim in the ocean?
Traded for Marion, arguably the best fast break finisher of the league, a good perimeter defender, the guy who can shoot the 3 or simply slash to basket with the same ease?
What in the fricking world is going on here?
First it's Webber in GS, then Kwame+Critt for Gasol and now this?
I don't know what GMs are smoking these days, but I want some 'cause it has to be some good strong ****...

From what I understand, Marion really wants out, though I'd thought they'd patched things up. Apparently though, it's Steve Kerr who's really pushing for this.
In my opinion, this can work out very well for both teams.
For Phoenix, like it or not, Shaq still commands a double and triple team when he's in the post. They can play him any number of minutes and not be dependent on him to be the first option. They can outrun him, vis-a-vis Kareem in LA (Shaq changes shots and is a great outlet passer), or they can slow down and force the opponent to double or triple team him.
For Miami, BOTH players have value. We tried to get Banks when he was a free agent a couple of years ago. He's quick, he can play defense, he's relatively young, he can shoot (38% from downtown), and he can score. As for Marion, I don't know whether they plan on keeping him, or he wants to stay, but if he opts out, Miami gains about $15 million in cap space for the offseason. If he stays, we delay it for one more year and have one of the better small forwards in the game. He's a great perimeter defender and a fantastic shooter. It's ironic that Miami gets a pair of great shooters only by trading Shaq.

wow shawn marion the guy who guarded point guards to centers for the suns is gone. Who the hell is gonna defend kobe? 
....tim duncan? Dirk is gonna go off on the suns and i think amare will be more in foul trouble because at center he only had yao ming to worry about in the west now he has to guard dirk, duncan, pau, and boozer.

first, you dont need 5 players to run a fast break. at least not that ive ever seen inthe 10+years of watching basketball. i dont expect shaq to miraculously fit into the suns offense but i dont expect him to destroy it. i think focusing on dunking open shots and grabbing a few rebounds shouldnt be impossible for him.
2nd, marion is a terrible on ball defender and i think hes a liability only because he cant guard great 4s and against the great 3s he cant keep up. surely he gets a lot of help steals and blks which make his numbers great but this does not mean hes a great defender. francis averaged 2 steals doesnt mean hes great. bowen averages under 1 blk 1 stl doesnt mean hes terrible. marion is overrated on D and im glad hes never been rewarded the DPOY based on his stats.
marion regularly disappears in the playoffs imo, im a spurs fan but i live in LA so i watch LA vs Suns just because i have access and he cant play D. against the spurs its even worst, he cant even score.
overall i dont understand how the suns couldnt get a better value than shaq, but i do think the suns are better with shaq than with marion. shaq will bring his poor health with him and the real winner of this trade depends on shaqs health.

Its great for the Heat. They get to dump Shaq's contract and get a quality player in return. Wade + Marion (assuming they resign him) + whoever they draft can form a solid basis for rebuilding.
I don't see how this addresses Phoenix's interior defensive problems. If Shaq was still a solid defender I could almost understand this.

my point exactly... but instead of outside in they now have the option of running it inside out... if they can play run and gun and can still effectively grind it out then this is big
