The best trade the Bucks could make right now...

Post#1 » by whatthe_buck!? » Wed Feb 6, 2008 12:30 pm

is IMO one that gives us a commodity that every team wishes they had but almost no team currently possesses in the NBA: namely, lots of salary cap space. This also happens to be the type of trade that Larry Harris would actually have a chance of getting oked by Kohl (who has already shown many times his extreme distaste for any transaction that would have the Bucks taking on salary).

If the Suns/Heat trade goes through, I see an opportunity for the Bucks to step in and take advantage of a Heat team whose GM (Pat Riley) seems desperate to avoid being forced to rebuild in the wake of Shaq's rapid decline. I expect the Heat to attempt to make another move to bring in a third star player who is a proven shooter/scorer which would serve to give the Heat a "Big Three" with a varied skillset to build around (for next season, presumably). The Bucks have such a player, so here is a trade I would advocate that cuts the Bucks' salary total almost in half for next season (from 62 million to 34 million) putting us more than twenty million dollars under the cap for 2008/09-

Miami trades--
Jason Williams, Ricky Davis, Alonzo Mourning, Dorrell Wright, Smush Parker, and Daequan Cook.

Milwaukee trades--
Michael Redd, Bobby Simmons, Dan Gadzuric, and our 2008 first round draft pick (top three protected in 2008 and unprotected in 2009 [if the Bucks win the lottory this year]).

Besides the clear benefit of getting rid of all that salary (Daequan Cook is the only Heat player included in this deal with a contract that is not expiring, and his has only two years left at just over 1 million a season), this trade also nets us a developing 22 yr old prospect at SF in Dorrell Wright who the Bucks could test drive for the rest of the season, not to mention that this trade would give the Bucks a great chance to put Bill Simmons' "Ewing Theory" to the test. As far as "salary dump" trades go, I challange anyone to come up with a better trade (that works under CBA restrictions) and that has a realistic chance of being accepted by the other team (assuming that you agree that this one has a realistic chance of being accepted by the Heat).

I eagerly await reading all of the malicious, disparaging posts I am sure this trade proposal will inspire. :]

Team depth charts after trade:

Heat-
PG Wade / Quinn / Banks
SG Redd / Wade / Banks
SF Marion / Simmons /Redd
PF Haslem / Marion / Blount
C Gadzuric / Blount / ?

Bucks-
PG M Williams / Ivey / J Williams
SG Bell / M Williams / R Davis
SF Wright / Mason / Davis
PF Yi / CV* / Ruffin
C Bogut / Ruffin / Voskul

*Obviously we would still be shopping CV.

You left Cook off the depth chart for the Bucks, I like him quite a bit and think he's gonna be a player, he'd go close to starting in front of Bell at the 2. Also like Dorrel Wright, so we definitely do add some young talent. I unlike most don't want to trade Bobby at this point though, think he's getting back to somewhere near his level right now, but if we trade him now we get low value in return. BTW just no way J Williams is behind Ivey in the depth chart surely? If this trade was to go down I'd consider moving Mo to the 2 and starting J Will at the 1.

I guess I was just thinking that I wouldn't want to have J Will playing very many minutes because he would only be here for three months and personally I would want guys who will be in Milwaukee for the long haul to be starting and getting the majority of the minutes (for chemistry building purposes).

Yeah fair enough, there is also the possibility he could re-up on the cheap after expiration, if they wanted to keep him that is. This is a strong reason to have Cook in the rotation though, would like to see what he could do.

I have been posting bucks/heat trades for the last month.

They are the perfect trading partner if the bucks want to seperate that backcourt and rebuild.
I would hope LH could talk to riley and see if there was some interest in redd or williams along with simmons or gadz for their expirings.

From there, I'd just cut jayson williams and ricky davis for the rest of the year.

Don't like giving up the 1st. round pick.
If your doing a salary dump to rebuild why would you include it.
Besides, look what giving up our 1st. has done in the past.

Can't Wright walk after this year or am I wrong?

Did you post this particular trade? If so, I apologize (and would ask MD or PP to lock this thread). I haven't been keeping up with this board very well lately.

I've posted similar ones, but several weeks ago. I'm happy you brought it up, I'm hoping Kohl or Harris browse this forum and get excited about this deal and call up riley :D

Seriously though, the bucks could offer the perfect third piece to go along with wade and marion, while the heat can offer an athletic small forward (dorrel wright), and expring deals which is what the bucks need to clear out a crap contract (simmons or gadz) and break up that backcourt.

The problems I see with this trade are that the Buck's can't afford to be giving away high lottery picks. With how bad we'd be after that trade my guess is we'd be drafting top 5 for the next two years. We have very little talent now and the guys we get from Miami are also a little short on talent. So if we also trade away our high lottery pick we lose the ability to draft talent to replace what we just traded away.

I also feel cap space isn't a big deal in Milwaukee. Nobody that's a great player is going to come here anyway. I think Simmons might be the best free agent we ever signed. We had a ton of cap space the past few years. We used it to give Redd the max, resign Gadz, resign Mo, sign Mason and resign Bell. If that's what we do with cap space then why bother?

Nevertheless, I like the idea of moving Redd for more cap space but if we do we can't be giving up our high lottery picks and instead need to acquire draft picks. If we can't get picks we need to bring in some young guy with more upside than Wright. Unfortunately, after seeing what Gasol brought O doubt we get any more for Redd. I read on here how he's well respected around the league by players and coached and how he is so great for team USA. But when push comes to shove he isn't playing in the all-star game or being named to any all NBA teams. He's supposed to be one of the best shooters in the league but I can't even recall him being in the all-star 3pt contest. My guess is he's a Buck until the end of his contract.

If the Bucks ever want to unload two practically unmovable contracts (Gadz' and Simmons') they will most likely have to bite the bullet and throw in a first rounder. I would love this deal even more if it could be done without sacrificing the 1st, but I not sure the Heat would do the deal without it (I suppose it's possible, though). Keep in mind, however, that the pick we would be giving up would be lottery protected in a supposedly weak draft.

And yes, you are wrong about Dorell Wright, he was a 1st round pick and is on the last year of his rookie deal so he will be a restricted free agent at the end of this season with a qualifying offer of around 3 million (I believe).

Well, what this year has taught us is that we might be drafting in the top five WITH Redd, so my question for you is why you want to be a 30-35 win team with an outside shot at the playoffs for the next couple of years with a team salary of over 60 million a season when we could be a 30-35 win team with an outside shot at the playoffs for the next couple of years with a team salary of 45 million. At least in the latter scenario we can save money and maintain financial flexibility while our young players develop. Plus, even if we are never able to lure a top tier free agent to Milwaukee, at least we could trade for a top tier player without having to match salaries (or maybe even receive a gift from a team with a good player who just wants to dump that players large contract ala Memphis and Pau).

I like what your trying to do with this trade.
I'm just not that high on Wright or Cook and would prefer to hang onto the pick. I think there are some players that could really help us in this draft.
In the end we need to change the direction of the team and while it's not my favorite trade (would be close without the 1st. :D ) I would be ok with it.

How about top 10 protected on the 2008 and top 3 on the 2009?

Your trade is pretty good, but I don't know if Wade wants to be a full time point guard. Also don't know if Riley would consider Michael Redd to be the missing piece. I do know that I don't want any 1st round draft picks dealt.

Here is my best trade:

New York gets: Williams/Simmons/Gadzuric

Sacramento gets: Villanueva/Rose/Voskuhl

Milwaukee gets: Artest/Randolph/Thomas

Then we get a veteran coach who has credibility. I think this trade works, without picks, because the best players in the trade (it's open to debate, but I would say Artest and Randolph) are currently at record low values.

A lineup of...

Ivey/Bell
Redd/Bell
Artest/Mason
Randolph/Thomas
Bogut/Yi

...would absolutely kill in the East. Then, we have Noel to replace Mason. Sessions to eventually replace Bell. Ersan in the wings. Mid-round picks in 2008 to get a Collison, Smith, Hendrix, Rush, or White. The present and the future are suddenly much brighter.

I would take that trade one step farther. Deal Redd to Jazz for AK47. Then have Artest at SG.

Artest and Randolph will already murder each other. Now you want to throw in the drama that AK 47 brings to a team? This team has implosion written all over it.

We need to make a deal with the heat. I could see pat riley salivating at the shot for a big three of wade/redd/marion.

I don't see any reason why we'd have to give up a first, but maybe get a future 1st in return down the line.

Something like: Redd and Simmons

For:

Jayson Williams, Ricky Davis, Dorel Wright (maybe some extras to match)

And if Riley would really want Redd we could expand the deal to throw in CV for Haslem (mixing and matching more players in to get the salaries to match).

Then finish the season with:

Ivey/Mo
Mo/Bell
Wright/Mason
Haslem/Yi
Bogut/Haslem

I'd just cut williams and davis immediately.

I actually think the better plan would be to make a deal with a team out west. Maybe you can get in on a reactionary deal with a team like Utah, Golden State or Dallas.

I don't see Redd and Miami being a good fit.

Return to Milwaukee Bucks
