How would you handle the PG situation if you were the GM?

There's some rules to this thread that I hope everyone can follow. There are to be no responses to other peoples posts of any kind, no reactionary posts, no comments on what other posters have said and no insulting of either PG. This isn't about how each PG plays but rather how you would deal with the situation if you were the GM.

This is a chance for everyone to have their say in regards to the biggest roster decision BC faces between now and next season. We should be able to post ideas about this topic without it turning into an insultfest with the usual suspects on both sides taking part. I hope this thread works cause I'm really interested what posters who normally avoid TJ vs. Jose threads, think about the topic.

So the choices are obvious, trade either one before the trade deadline, trade either one in the summer, or commit the money to keep both. When proposing a trade try to make it as realistic as possible with which team would actually want a PG and who we could realistically get from them.

So again don't respond or react to others ideas. Don't even read the responses before making yours, just respond now and read others answers afterwards. Just post your own ideas in here and there should be no good reason to make a second post in here either. I hope everyone can get on board with this and hopefully the mods can help me out with it. Lets see if this works.....

Financially commit to both PGs.

You pay the money and keep both until at least the next trade deadline (Feb 2009). That gives you a better read on T.J.'s physical vulnerability. That gives you more time to assess Bargnani's progress. That also gives you a chance to move Calderon or Ford with expiring contracts for a big score. You could do that this summer, but you wouldn't be giving Ford enough time to show that a more vigorous workout regime has reduced the incidents of stingers. A mid-season deal also gives the team some time to develop a third PG who could move into the second string role after a trade.

I understand that you don't want this thread to become a TJ vs. Jose thread, but it inevitably becomes one because what you want the GM to do is directly related to what you think of the point guard situation.

If I was GM, I would either let it be known with the Smitch that Jose is the starter for this team, and the one that's going to be closing out games. If Smitch and TJ could accept that, then I'd be ECSTATIC with TJ becoming one of the best backups in the league. If I didn't think that Smitch or TJ could accept this, and thought that it would cause serious problems in the future, then I would try and trade TJ and sign Jose to a contract extension.

Resign Jose, keep both PG's for the forseeable future. Jose's salary shouldn't be too bad, in which we could possibly trade him down the line if we max out our potential and desperately need another piece or an infusion of talent, in which Jose could bring in a nice addition. This is all contingent on TJ getting back to form and Ukic/other player proving to be an adequate backup...

I'd pay both, the same damn salary. bring over Ukic, find out early next season if he can be a serviceable backup, then i'd personally trade T.J. assuming he's built up enough value to get over the potential injury concerns other teams have. I think he's the better player, and would be more valuable in trades to teams that aren't as euro-centric as we are. Jose is still an all-star quality PG, who will play damn near as much as he did while TJ was out.

In return for T.J. obviously you have to get an all-star level 2-3 guy. Who's that? I dunno, that's why i hired scouts, like dagger there.

Let TJ prove he can play for a while.
Listen to all offers and if a steal is there, deal one.
The PG position is one of strength and they get along so no deal has to be done if we don't want to.

Hold on to both point guards. Try to possibly lock up Jose long term as we're not sure how much his value will raise.

Given what i have seen BC trying to do, i cant see him not reupping Jose. Having said that, you dont want one of your highest paid players/as well as one of your best talents, getting bench minutes. BOTH have proven they can handle and flourish with starting minutes. BOTH have shown they can carry this team as the PG.

Without knowing all the ins and outs of our financial situation, i would resign Jose no matter what. Then, next trade deadline when Rasho becomes Kwame, we have a lot of freedom. If TJ is still surrounded by question marks, he can be packaged with Rasho's deal. If he is not, he can be traded for a lot of options next season. I tend to think due to his medical issues, there would have to be a package.

I really like TJ, i think he has a lot to offer, but if given the choice, i would rather my future be in the hands of Jose rather than TJ. We would have a PG who controls games, and gets the ball to our two (hopefully by then) all star bigs.

Trade Ford at the draft for a proven SF and then use our first rounder to pick the best possibly point guard most likely one of DJ Augustin, Darren Collison or Ty Lawson.

Get ready to commit to both. If no good deals are out there, you happily keep both on the roster - but try to get hands on defensive big who can allow two PG's to play more TOGETHER.

Trade Ford (along with whatever fillers/sweetners needed) IF... can get Dalembert, Richard Jefferson, Jack + Outlaw, or Caron. Ford's injury risks are reason to be scared, so upgrading the starting five could be a solid idea.

Trade Calderon if it can help us net Caron, Joe Johnson, or maybe even Josh Smith... and hope that TJ Ford can stay healthy for the remainder of his hopefully long career.

If a three way could net us Mike Miller + Darko, that wouldn't be so bad either.

Pay Calderon and monitor TJ's health... Keep the PG tandem for the best 48 minutes of PG play in the league... Which ever PG wins the starting spot starts and the other is the backup with as many minutes allotted due to favorable matchups.

Calderon(or Ford if they want him!) + Rasho for Marion + filler in a sign and trade in the offseason!

Wait till tj ford has built enough value, trade him with some guys for a perennial allstar.

I wouldn't pull any triggers before the trade deadline. Wait to see after playoffs.

Perhaps trade and sign or get a lottery pick. The free agent class of 08 is O.O.

I would start Jose at the point based on stability. TJ is arguably is one of the fastest players in the league and would be a perfect fit as 6th man.

You pay to keep Jose this summer. Perhaps you monitor the trade market but the most important thing is for TJ prove to be healthy and (hopefully) re-establish his trade value first.

At that point, when the right deal presents itself, I would look to trade/package TJ for a proven wing scorer or even a stud big man that can help the defense and rebounding. Hopefully one that is at or near an all-star level.

TJ is locked up for the next few seasons, so my next step would be to re-sign Jose to a contract, three years, four years whatever it would take.

Right now its evaluation time,
TJ's value on the open market is questionable, so you may as well let him play out the season increase his value so at least if at the draft a sweet deal comes along you can get market value.

Otherwise I let them play as a platoon till an appealing alternative comes along.
