I think this is a good deal for the Suns. Not worth the money, but hey, the title window is closing for Nash. Shaq gives them a legit shot. Before, their gimmick offense wasn't going to get them a title. In the playoffs you need a good halfcourt offense, and good itnerior D. Shaq improves them substantially in both. He may not be great anymore but he's a LOT better than what the Suns had.
One thing that is being overlooked is Shaq's passing ability. He worked very well out of the triangle. The Suns don't run a triangle but some of the same principles are there. Shaq will find the cutters or open shooters. This really gives the Suns a whole new dimension to their halfcourt offense, without having to rely on Nash to create everything.
And finally, don't underestimate a motivated Shaq. The guy can still be a beast. I think this sets up a Lakers-Suns WC final, which will motivate the hell out of Shaq to play against Kobe. All I can say is I'm glad we are in the EC, so we don't have to run the gauntlet of Suns-Spurs-Lakers-Mavs and even Hornets. The only team in the EC comparable is the Pistons. Whoever comes out of the west is going to be battle-tested but damn tired.

I'll agree... Shaq's ability to pass the ball could add a dimension to their offence.....provided Shaq understands this role and dosen't try to take over the game for them....
I just get the sence that Shaq has to be "the man"....and those days of dominace are about over for him for the most part....Its a big gamble IMO....I wish them well!

You guys are focusing WAAAAAYYYY too much on offense. That team is going to be good offensively no matter what. The real concern is that Shaq hasn't proven since last year that he can even play ok defense. He got destroyed by Chicago last year in the playoff and I'm skeptical that it was due to effort. He may just not be able to move anymore.

Teams are gonna want to run with the Suns now when Shaq is in there...
I forsee a scenario where Shaq probably dosen't even get down court before the Suns launch a three and then he ends up struggling to get back on defence should they miss....
Heck, they used to try and run him up and down the court when he was in his prime to tire him, dont you suppose the opposition will now?

Good move for the Heat. The Suns would have been better off, if they had offered Marion for Gasol, as I said a few days ago in the Gasol trade thread. The Grizzlies would also be much better off. Gasol is a much better fit in Phoenix than Shaq. Marion actually has some value to the Grizz, while Kwame has none. Now that Banks is gone, are the Suns going to need to find another point guard?

Plus, by getting Gasol instead of Shaq the Suns would have blocked the lakers from getting an impact player.

I have to disagree. What does Gasol bring to PHX that they don't already have?

No, they never played Banks anyway.

This is absolutely the most moronic trade ever.
PHOENIX IS A RUNNING TEAM! HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE SEEN NASH TO MARION ALLY-OOPS. ugh. this is just stupid ^ 5 million.
Also, HELLOO, MARION IS A SICK DEFENDER AND GETS MORE REBOUNDS THEN SHAQ.
Shaq is 36 and injured - not surprising for someone thats like 350 pounds. I love shaq, and shaq is still pretty good when healthy... but he makes NO sense on the Suns.
FIRE KERR. YOU IMBECILE!

How many times does it have to be said, YOU DON'T NEED 5 PLAYERS TO RUN THE BREAK!
No you dont but you need a player who can run up and down the floor quickly if you want to set up a half court offense in a secondary break style as the suns do almost every possesion if you have to wait 5 seconds for your post defender to get down the court the other teams D gets comptelty set and you lose 10 possesions a game which is key when one of the big ways you win is tiring your opposition out in the 4th quarter.
I live in a suburb of phx, and watch over 30 suns games a year this IMOP was a horrible move for them, especially when you consider we gave away kurt thomas and 2 draft picks to save 7 million dollars this summer and now we are taking on 20 million + more (shaq is owed 50 about, Marion 8 with an option for 17 he likley wont excresice, Banks about 18).
This deal pisses me off big time, not a fan.

The best thing about all these moves is that the West just keeps getting tougher and tougher when you look at the playoff picture. I know the Playoffs have a lot of days off built in but I'm sure there will be some emotionally and physically exhausted players on the Western Conference Championship team. Hopefully the C's can get to the Finals to take advantage.

They're paying Shaq 20 mil for another two seasons after this...why not just pay Marion what he wanted and try and trade Banks in another deal
I think Shaq certainly helps them, but not enough to replace what Marion brings to the table on both sides of the ball, and his health is a question mark. Of course if Boris Diaw steps up and is able to replace Marion's role well enough, then this maybe this can work for Phoenix

I guess the Suns are just hoping that Shaq can provide some defense and can stay healthy. I think he's done, but maybe with a chance at a ring he can put together a couple good months of basketball. Next year I'm assuming Shaq will be useless and injured.
As for the Heat, I see no reason to try and resign Marion. He's not worth the money he will want. Try and get someone else to pair with Wade. I think their money would be better off away from Marion.

The Suns are now the team to beat. Sure, Shaq is a shadow of his former self. But he is big and he is still a much better center in the playoffs than Perkins or anybody out West.
Stoudemire and Nash now have a big man to watch there backs. Nobody will be pushing them around. Instead of an undersized overacheiving small forward at PF position, the Suns now have Stoudemire who cannot be guarded. Defensively, Amare now has a chance to be decent.
Grant Hill, Barbosa, Nash, Amare is still plenty of fire power and I believe Boris Diaw can pick up some of Marion's production.
If Shaq can be an 8/8 type of player and not derail the offense too much.... the Suns are now the odds on favorite to win it all.
Now.... nobody else will say it. The pundits are slamming this trade. Just like Shaq to Miami was a bad deal for Miami and just like Garnett to Boston couldn't work......
The Suns now have experience, size, confidence and leadership to go along with amazing offensive production. Can Boston match up with them? I think so.... but the West has just been decided.

"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."
