Suns wanted Okafor

Post#1 » by fluffernutter » Wed Feb 6, 2008 5:32 pm

Apparently the Suns were also interesting in trading for Okafor, but that deal didn't happen. They got Shaq instead.

Interesting.

Okafor for Marion anyone?

That's not what we need, obviously....

Okafor for Stoudmire, yes. For Marion, no.

Felton-Richardson-Wallace-Marion-Mohammed looks okay at first glance, but what happens when Mohammed inevitably gets into foul trouble?

They wanted EO50 because he's studly: but we would be horrible trading partners with the Suns. We have no large contract to make the salaries work with anything we would get back for EO50 (like Matrix, Amare, Barbosa, Diaw etc) unless they were talking about a potential S&T over the summer...........which wouldn't help the Suns now.

My guess is they offered WELL under the odds for EO50 and MJ told gave them the "long walk, short plank" line.

Only way we'd do that is if Amare was involved.

And how would that work Rich with Amare getting paid 14 mil a year and EO50 getting paid 5 mil a year????

We're not THAT far from being able to do it if we threw on Piggy and McInnis' expirings and used up our remaining 3m of cap space this season. But we'd have to either hand them a collection of young guys (including May or Morrison) or Carroll, which I doubt they even want.

If Marion opts out and asks for a max deal, we laugh at him and wish him luck. If the cap is 56m, the team giving him this hypothetical deal would need to have less than 40m on the cap next year, which leaves: Atlanta (doubtful), the 76ers (possible) and... us.

Amare = 13.7

EO50 = 5.4
Hammer = 5.4
Pigboy = 2.3
McMinus = 800k (and would have to consent to the trade)

so that might get it done - of course it would leave us with only 11 players on our roster!!

okafor is a RFA. the only way he leaves is if we decide to let him leave by not matching an offer.

big difference.

We will match any offer for Okafor. But if it's a max deal, then we would either work out a S&T or sign him outright and then trade him when the best deal comes along. More than likely it would be a S&T over the summer. And we're not giving him away Memphis style.

Also we wouldn't be trading him because we can't afford to do so. We would be trading him because we don't think he's a max player. Player value should always equal their contract.

I love Oak. But no way is he worth max money. I think by now he has to know that. If he still thinks that he is let him pick a team, so we can get this trade happening.

Why would the Cats even entertain the thought?

Meka is a cornerstone of this franchise.

What the Cats really need is a real coach.
