You can't let a team that's as bad as the Heat hang around all game and expect to turn it on at the end. They still have some good players and if they're close or have a lead late, they could steal one. The Pistons know this (I certainly hope) and should start to exert their influence before the end of the first half.

It's time for Smooth, Mr. Big Shot, to come in and take care of this game because it is close to getting out of hand. Also, it would be nice if the Pistons could make some free throws. They are 4-of-9 this quarter. It would not look good for the Pistons to give the Heat their 10th win of the season, especially when Miami is dressing nine.

During the last timeout, Rasheed Wallace went up to referee Eddie F. Rush and told him one of his fellow refs was "terrible." He preceded terrible with an adverb, which I will leave to your imagination.

Rasheed Wallace had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 100-95 win over Miami on Wednesday night, a few hours after the Heat traded Shaquille O'Neal.

The Heat sent O'Neal, who won his fourth title in Miami two years ago, to Phoenix for four-time All-Star Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks. If the Heat were down emotionally about the deal, which was announced within hours of tipoff, they didn't show it.

Miami, the NBA's only team without 10 wins, has lost five in a row and 20 of 21.

Each of Detroit's starters scored in double figures.

Wallace led the way, while Hamilton scored 19, Billups had 15 points and 10 assists, Antonio McDyess had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Tayshaun Prince added 14.Reserve Ricky Davis had 20 points, Mark Blount and Dorell Wright scored 14 apiece and Alexander Johnson added 11.

Notes:@ The Heat requested waivers on Luke Jackson, who signed as a free agent on Dec. 12 and averaged 5.6 points while making fewer than one-third of his shots in 14 games. ... After official Brian Forte called a technical on Wallace, who was complaining about a call against McDyess, the bombastic center had more to say. "He needs to go back to the NBDL or middle school

Miami led 22-18 after the first quarter and despite trailing by 11 after the third, the short-handed team did not give up. Dwayne Wade, who had 30 points and 12 assists, pulled the Heat within a point with just under 3 minutes left and he set up Ricky Davis' 3-pointer to make it 94-92 with 21.5 seconds left.

Richard Hamilton and Chauncey Billups made enough free throws on the next three possessions to seal the win for the Pistons, who have won sixth straight.

The Heat outscored Detroit in the first and fourth quarters, but the game turned in the third when the Pistons pulled away with a 27-16 advantage.

The Miami Heat star heard rumblings about O'Neal being traded before Wednesday, but couldn't bring himself to expect that it was going to happen."You don't see a guy like Shaquille O'Neal getting traded very often," Wade said after losing to the Detroit Pistons 100-95 in his first game with O'Neal as an ex-teammate.

Rasheed Wallace, who had 26 points and 10 rebounds to lead Detroit to its sixth win in a row, said he can see the pluses and minuses for the Suns in their deal for the banged-up O'Neal.

Wallace led the way, while Hamilton scored 19, Billups had 15 points and 10 assists, Antonio McDyess had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Tayshaun Prince added 14.

I want to be surprised it was close, but I just can't. I agree the starters played well, the bench didn't really give us much, cept for 5 big points from Hayes.

A theoretical question to ponder: If the Pistons played the Heat Wednesday, and nobody came, did it really happen? The Palace was only about a quarter full, with fans facing travel problems from the evening ice and snow storm that hit Metro Detroit. Those who did make it to the game weren't exactly treated to a stellar show. It was hard to tell who was the NBA's second-best team (Pistons) or the NBA's worst (Heat).

"That's probably our problem -- we really didn't anticipate a tough, tough game," Pistons guard Chauncey Billups said. "We played real dangerous (Wednesday). I know that next time we play a team like that, we've got to take care of business early. "We underestimated them a bit, and that's our fault." The win extends the Pistons' winning streak to six, and the Heat remain the only NBA team stuck in single-digits for wins (nine). Pistons coach Flip Saunders added, "(The game was) more adventurous, but not unexpected. I just thought we couldn't get our energy going, just couldn't sustain it."

But the Pistons? Not many logical alibis were available. "Typical situation of what we do when we play against a team that is under .500, we get off to a slow start," Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince said. "That was the case, and that's why we were in a dogfight."

Worst win of the year. Starters dogged it (outside of sheed), and still played big minutes.

Flip Saunders' bench play calling is still an issue. And Amir only playing 2 minutes in a game where we had no energy, against a team with no bigs.... Weak.

After a slow start, the Pistons (35-13) were up by 11 at the end of the third quarter but didn't score until nearly three minutes had passed in the fourth as the Heat went on a 9-0 run.

Still, it wasn't until Tayshaun Prince (14 points) hit a 22-foot jumper with 24.8 seconds left -- putting the Pistons up, 94-89 -- that they had some room to breath."I knew the shot clock was low," Prince said. "I made a move to get the defender off me and take a shot. With the time that was left, I could have got to the basket or the paint and got a shot. But once I got him off me, that's the shot I decided to take."

But even in a building devoid of atmosphere, the Pistons had a big advantage. After cutting guard Luke Jackson to make room for the two-for-one trade, the Heat had nine active players available. Injured forward Udonis Haslem and center Alonzo Mourning were not with the team. Neither was exiled point guard Smush Parker or, of course, O'Neal.
